  • Carbon fiber epoxy composite materials are widely used in the structures of aircrafts, robots and other machines because of their high specific stiffness, high specific strength and damping. In order for the composite materials to be used in the robot structure or machine element, bearing mounting and joining surfaces must be provided, which require accurate machining. In this paper, the machinability and tool wear characteristics of the milling operation of the carbon fiber epoxy composite materials were experimentally measured. The tool wear mechanism and the Taylor tool wear constants were determined. Also, the surface roughness of milling operation was measured w.r.t. cutting speed and feed.

  • The feed drive inclination significantly influences product quality, machine tool accuracy and life time. However, the accurate measurement of the inclination needs the skilled engineers and the accurate leveling instruments such as spirits or electric levels. In this study a novel methodology for the estimation of inclination angle of machine tool feed drive is proposed. The proposed methodology utilizes the motor current signals and a new mathematical model of machine tool feed drive considering inclination. The experiment results showed that the proposed method successfully estimates the inclination angle, as well as newly proposed model also enhances the accuracy of the machine tool feed drive model by introducing the inclination effects.

  • The objective of the proposed study is to produce a tool-condition monitoring (TCM) strategy that will lead to a more efficient and economical drilling tool usage. Drill-wear monitoring is an important attribute in the automatic cutting processes as it can help preventing damages of the tools and workpieces and optimizing the tool usage. This study presents the architectures of a multi-layer feed-forward neural network with back-propagation training algorithm for the monitoring of drill wear. The input features to the neural networks were extracted from the AE signals using the wavelet transform analysis. Training and testing were performed under a moderate range of cutting conditions in the dry drilling of steel plates. The results indicated that the extracted input features from AE signals to the supervised neural networks were effective for drill wear monitoring and the output of the neural networks could be utilized for the tool life management planning.

  • The process of determining the optimal tool path in PCB(printed circuit board) drilling operations is identical with that of solving a TSP(traveling salesman problem). However, the optimal solution will be ruined when a drill bit needs tracking back in its tool paths. The back tracking occurrences shorten a life of the main spindle and result in inaccurate mechanical movements. In this study, the performances of four heuristics(Nearest Neighbor, Convex Hull, Greatest Angle and Most Eccentric Ellipse) are evaluated to obtain feasible tool paths along with less number of back trackings for a large number of holes(more than 2000holes/bit) and to generate corresponding NC codes for a given CNC drill. Also, the operations of these algorithms are visualized to show a user the graphic image of tool visitation with PCB holes on a computer screen.

  • Increased complexity of products and their manufacturing processing demans higher quality control and monitoring than ever before. Therefore, flexible automatization or flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) offer numerous advantages over alternative manufacturing methods. In this state, a in-process monitoring is one of the important flexible automation system. And as use of NC and CNC machine tool has been increasing, cutting work has automating and it is necessary to develop the automatic production system combined a couple of machine tool. • The liquid nitrogen as an environmentally safe coolant has been widely recognized in cryogenic machining, its function as a lubricant is plausible due to its chemical inertness, physical volatility and low viscosity. Since a reduced friction is a direct witness of the lubrication effect from a tribological viewpoint, this paper presents an evaluation of the apparent friction coefficient on the tool-chip interface in cryogenic cutting operations to prove and characterize the lubricity of LN2 in cryogenic machining. The cryogenic cutting technology used in this study is based on a cooling approach and liquid nitrogen delivery system which are intended to apply liquid nitrogen in well-controlled fine jets to selectively localized cutting zones and to penetrate liquid nitrogen to the tool-chip interface. It has been found that the apparent friction coefficient can be significantly reduced in cryogenic machining, depending on the approach of liquid nitrogen delivery.

  • This study is focused on the prediction of appropriate tool life by clarifying the correlation between progressive tool wear and AE(Acoustic Emission) signals, while cutting stainless steel by end mill on the machining center. The results of this study were that RMSAE tends to increase linearly along with the increase of the cutting speed, and it was more sensitive to depth of cut than to the variation of feed rate at the same cutting conditions, and RMSAE increases around 0.21mm flank wear hereby AE-HIT also increases. AE signals depend upon tool wear and fracture from the above results. Therefore, the AE signals can be utilized in order to monitor the tool condition.

  • A machine tool has some serous stability problem in the from of tool chatter during the cutting process. Chatter vibration deteriorates the surface finish, reduce tool and machine life, accelerate machine tool system component wear, and may lead to an unacceptable noise sound in the working environment. In this study, in order to moni색 of the chatter vibration on the cutting process, the behavior of spectral density of AE signal and principal cutting force signal has been investigated. Furthermore, its reliability from obtained the results has been studied to evaluate and confirm the proposed method with the application procedure and the experimental results.

  • This paper presents precision machining of sculptured surfaces with a flat end cutter as follows; tool path generation using partition machining method and elimination interference. These days many researchers are getting interested in flat end cutter having a good cutting performance as machine tool for machining sculptured surfaces. It can get low curvature surfaces and have a much better material removal rates and longer tool life. Partition machining method is the first submitted in this paper. It is a new method of tool path generation, which means the way to map surfaces under the normal vector and then to cut them partially.
