High speed machining experiment on the heat-treated mold steel(STAVAX and CALMAX of hardness HRc 53) is carried using TiAlN coated ball endmill. Tool life and wear characteristics under the various machining parameters and cooling methods are investigated. Effect of cooling method on life and wear of the tool was compared. For most cases, tool life was not determined by the amount of wear but by th chipping on the cutting edge. It is found that tool manufacturer's cutting parameters generally agrees with the results of this experiment.

The machinability of wear-resistible tungsten carbides and the tool wear behavior in machining of V30 and V50 tungsten carbides using PCD (Poly Crystalline Diamond) cutting tool was investigated to understand machining characteristics. This material is one of the difficult-to-cut materials in present, but their usage has been already broadened to every commercial applications such as mining tools, and impact resistant tools etc. Summary of the results are as follows. (1) Tool wear progression of PCD tools in turning of wear-resistible tungsten carbides were observed specially fast in primary cutting distance within 10m. (2) Three components of cutting resistance in this research were different in balance from the ordinary cutting such as that cutting of steel or cast iron. Those were expressed large value by order of thrust force, principal force, feed force. (3) If presume from viewpoint of high efficient cutting within this research, a proper cutting speed was 15m/min and a proper feed rate was 0.1mm/rev. In this case, it was found that the tool life of PCD tool was cutting distance until 230m approximately. (4) In cutting of wear-resistible tungsten carbides such as V30 and V50, it was recognized that the tool wear rate of V30 was very fast as compared with V50. (5) When the depth of cut was 0.1mm, there was no influence of the feed rate on the feed force. And the feed force tended to decrease as the cutting distance was long, because the tool was worn and the tool edge retreated. (6) It was observed that the tungsten carbides were adhered to the flank.
Broaching machine is widely used for machining inner shaped slots in the work-pieces, and provides vertical motion (usually hydraulically powered) between tool and work-piece. In this study, we modelled the tool life process and investigated economic tool life of broaching machine. Tool life process is divided into wear-process and succeeding failure process. Wear process is defined as machining wear and failure process as 'chipping' occurred by random shock. We modelled wear process as linear regression function for products amounts and assumed failure process as Poisson process. Economic tool life is defined as the number of lots which minimizes average tool related cost per lot and analyzed by using age replacement policy technique. As tool-related cost factors, we consider tool replacement cost, tool maintenance cost and quality costs of products. The results of this study can be applied to analyze life process of general machining tools.

Recently, the use of advanced materials with light weight significantly increases because of global regulation on CO2 emission. Especially, CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) one of the most promising advanced materials. Since CFRP has pretty higher strength per unit weight than steel, it is one of most popular materials in aviation industry and its application to automobile rises sharply. Especially, one of the frequent machining processes for CFRP is drilling to make a hole, however, CFRP drilling has troublesome limitations in hole quality and productivity induced due to delamination, splintering and severe tool wear. Particularly, cutting loads increase caused by tool wear makes delamination and splintering even severer. Therefore, tool wear monitoring or reduction in CFRP drilling must be considered seriously. In this study, we measured thrust force, flank wear, and tool surface temperature in drilling using various tools with different sizes and materials. Consequently, it was presented the effects of tool properties on drilled hole quality, thrust force and tool surface temperature.

A Study was made on falnk wear in carbide tools in turning SUS304 steel. When an austenitic stainless steel (SUS304 steel) is cut with the tool, saw-toothed chip are produced. It is found that machining SUS304 steel would make a tool worn fast. For increasing productivity, tool wear has to be predicted and controlled. An amended cutting geometry consisting of a negative rake angle ($-6^{\circ}$ ) and a high clearance angle ($-17^{\circ}$ ) is proposed for decreasing carbide tool wear (flank) in the machining of SUS304 steel. The amended cutting geometry is found to make the flank wear lower than a general cutting geometry (rake angle $6^{\circ}$ , clearance angle $5^{\circ}$). The effects of the three cutting variables (cutting speed, feed, tool radius) on the flank wear analyzed by fiting a simple first-order model containing interaction terms to each flank wear parameter by means of regression analysis and the predicted from first-order regression analysis model equation of flank wear.
This study aims to improve the machinability of gray cast irons in high speed cutting by using nonmetallic inclusions. In this research, small quantities of AL and Mg were added to conventional gray cast irons without influencing their mechanical characteristics and castability to investigate the effects of these nonmetallic inclusions in the gray cast irons on tool wear in high speed cutting. During the high speed turning of gray cast iron containing Al and Mg using a cermet tool, protective layers consisting of Al, Mg, Si, Mn, S and O were detected on the flank face and rake face of the tool, and flank and crater wear were significantly reduced compared to the turning of conventional gray cast iron and gray cast iron added with Al. The effect of inclusions on tool wear increased with increasing cutting speed, and flank and crater wear was the smallest at the cutting speed of 700m/min. Moreover, in face milling, the addition of Al and Mg drastically decreased the wear rate, and wear hardly progressed even in prolonged cutting length after initial wear. The amount of adhesion on tool faces increased as the cutting speed increased. This increase in cutting speed resulted in the formation of a thick protective layer and the reduction of tool wear. Furthermore, the addition of small amounts of Al and Mg prevented thermal cracks in the face milling of gray cast irons.
In order to investigate the wear behavior of aluminum alloy depended on different hardness of the mating tool steel, sliding wear tests were conducted. It was found that the wear characteristics pattern of aluminum alloy for sliding speed was not affected by the hardness of the mating tool steel. However, the effects of the hardness of the mating tool steel exhibited only in relatively low sliding speed ranges. At these ranges, the wear rate of aluminum alloy decreased when increasing the hardness of the mating tool steel. This was attributed by the fact that $Al_2O_3$ particles released from the aluminum worn surface were crushed and embedded on the mating worn surface with high hardness level. At the high sliding speed ranges, wear of aluminum alloy was hardly occurred by the formation of thick $Al_2O_3$ film on the worn surface, regardless of the hardness of the mating tool steel.
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the variation of tool electrode edge wear and machining performance outputs, namely, the machining rate (workpiece removal rate), tool wear rate and the relative wear, with the varying machining parameters (pulse time, discharge current and dielectric flushing pressure) in EDM die sinking. The edge wear profiles obtained are modeled by using the circular arcs, exponential and poller functions. The variation of radii of the circular arcs with machining parameters is given. It is observed that the exponential function models the edge wear profiles of the electrodes, very accurately. The variation of exponential model parameters with machining parameters is presented.

Monitoring of Cutting tool wear is a critical issue in automated machining system and has been extensively studied for many years. An austempered ductile iron(ADI) exhibits the excellent mechanical properties and the wear resistance. ADI has generally the poor machinability due to the characteristic. This paper presents the in-process detection of flank wear of cutting tools using the acoustic emission sensor and the digital oscilloscope. The amplitude level of AE signal(AErms) is mainly affected by cutting speed and it is proportional to cutting speed. There have been the relationship of direct proportion between the amplitude level of AE signals and the flank wear width of cutting tool. The flank wear with corresponding to the tool life is successfully detected with the monitor-ing system used in this study.

The tool life is not long enough under sever forming condition in warm forging. The tool life is affected by wear heat fatigue plastic deformation and so on. Especially wear is one of the most serious factors for tool life. To increase tool life we should consider various factors like processing design die design die materials lubrication and cooling system This study design to obtain the steady state temperature of die by FEM analysis under several conditions of cooling. There are four cooling conditions in this study no cooling internal cooling external cooling and both internal and external cooling. With above obtained temperatures tool life is predicted using Archard's model that is considered softening of die. The effect of internal cooling system is better than that of externally cooled die. To predict the die life the steady state temperature is calculated by using mean temperature of die. Considering only wear the die life much longer as the cooling effect is bigger. The more accurate die life will be predicted if we consider heat crack as well as wear.
