Due to the inherent dimensional uncertainty, the tolerances accumulate in the assembly of plasma cutting torch. Tolerance accumulation has serious effect on the performance of the plasma torch. This study proposes a statistical tolerance propagation model, which is based on matrix transform. This model can predict the final tolerance distributions of the completed plasma torch assembly with the prescribed statistical tolerance distribution of each part to be assembled. Verification of the proposed model was performed by making use of Monte Carlo simulation. Monte Carlo simulation generates a large number of discrete plasma torch assembly instances and randomly selects a point within the tolerance region with the prescribed statistical distribution. Monte Carlo simulation results show good agreement with that of the proposed model. This results are promising in that we can predict the final tolerance distributions in advance before assembly process of plasma torch thus provide great benefit at the assembly design stage of plasma torch.
Due to the inherent dimensional uncertainty, tolerances accumulate in the final assembly. Tolerance accumulation has serious effect on the performance of ECV assembly. This paper proposes a method of tolerance accumulation analysis using Monte Carlo simulation, which includes welding process in assemble process. This method can predict the final tolerance distributions of the completed assembly with the prescribed statistical tolerance distribution of each part to be assembled. With the inclusion of welding, another dimensional uncertainties due to partial melting is to be accounted as well. Partial melting of projection height was included in the tolerance propagation analysis. Verification of the proposed method was performed by making use of Monte Carlo simulation. Monte Carlo simulation results showed promising results in that we can predict the final tolerance distributions in advance before actual assembly process of precision machinery.
In this study, the propagation characteristics and the fabrication tolerance of an optical wire in a flexible optical PCB were analyzed by using a ray-tracing method. It is found from the analysis that the sidewall angle of a core should be controlled within $1^{\circ}$ in order to maintain the propagation loss to less than -1 dB/mm, and that the bending radius of the optical wire should be larger than 5 mm in order to suppress the bending loss below -1 dB. In addition, it is confirmed that the lateral misalignment of ${\pm}15\;{\mu}m$, and the angular tilting of VCSEL of $6^{\circ}$ are allowable for the coupling loss of -1 dB.

This study aims to assess the damage tolerance of the wing structure of aged aircraft with long-term service through the fatigue crack growth analysis and tests. For the fatigue-critical locations (FCL) W2 and W4 in the wing structure, the fatigue stress spectrum was derived based on a previous study. Thereafter, a crack propagation analysis for the FCLs was conducted using the commercial software $NASGRO^{TM}$. The algorithm for the fatigue stress spectrum was verified. Fatigue crack growth tests were then performed for two types of specimens: Type #1 was extracted from the wing structure of aged aircraft, and Type #2 was made of the same material as the wing structure. By comparing the experimental results of these specimens, we assessed the damage tolerance of the wing structure of aged aircraft with service time.

This research addresses study on thermal residual stress of a composite patch repair of the edge cracked aluminium panel of aging aircraft. Composite patch repair is an efficient and economical technique to improve the damage tolerance of cracked metallic structures. These are thermal residual stresses due to the mismatch of coefficient of thermal expansion, and these are affected by the curing cycle of patch specimen. In this study, three curing cycles were selected for F.E. analysis. This study features the effect on composite patch and aluminum by thermal residual stress during crack propagation in aluminum plate.
The train conflict resolution problem refers to an adjustment of the train operation schedule in order to minimize the delay propagation when a train conflict is predicted or when a train conflict occurs. Previous train studies of train conflict resolutions are limited in terms of the size of the problems to be solved due to exponential increases in the variables. In this paper, we propose a train conflict resolution model using a time-space network to solve the train conflict situation in the operational phase. The proposed model adjusts the size of the problem by giving only the dwell tolerance in the time-space network only for stops at the station after a train conflict. In addition, the proposed model can solve large problems using a path flow variable. The study presents a train delay propagation analysis and experimental results of train conflict resolution assessments as well using the proposed model.
This paper presents an application of layered Artificial Neural Network controller to study load frequency control problem in power system. The objective of control scheme guarantees that steady state error of frequencies and inadvertent interchange of tie-lines are maintained in a given tolerance limitation. The proposed controller has been designed for a two-area interconnected power system. Only one artificial neural network controller (ANN), which controls the inputs of each area in the power system together, is considered. In this study, back propagation-through time algorithm is used as neural network learning rule. The performance of the power system is simulated by using conventional integral controller and ANN controller, separately. For the first time comparative study has been carried out between SMES and CES unit, all of the areas are included with SMES and CES unit separately. By comparing the results for both cases, the performance of ANN controller with CES unit is found to be better than conventional controllers with SMES, CES and ANN with SMES.
In this study, Neural Networks models were used to forecast daily streamflow at Jindong station of the Nakdong River basin. Neural Networks models consist of CASE 1(5-5-1) and CASE 2(5-5-5-1). The criteria which separates two models is the number of hidden layers. Each model has Fletcher-Reeves Conjugate Gradient BackPropagation(FR-CGBP) and Scaled Conjugate Gradient BackPropagation(SCGBP) algorithms, which are better than original BackPropagation(BP) in convergence of global error and training tolerance. The data which are available for model training and validation were composed of wet, average, dry, wet+average, wet+dry, average+dry and wet+average+dry year respectively. During model training, the optimal connection weights and biases were determined using each data set and the daily streamflow was calculated at the same time. Except for wet+dry year, the results of training were good conditions by statistical analysis of forecast errors. And, model validation was carried out using the connection weights and biases which were calculated from model training. The results of validation were satisfactory like those of training. Daily streamflow forecasting using Neural Networks models were compared with those forecasted by Multiple Regression Analysis Mode(MRAM). Neural Networks models were displayed slightly better results than MRAM in this study. Thus, Neural Networks models have much advantage to provide a more sysmatic approach, reduce model parameters, and shorten the time spent in the model development.

In this paper, we have identified the system instability factors in a bistatic radar system using pulse chasing and considered their effects on the bistatic receiver's MTI(Moving Target Indication) improvement performance. The pulse chasing is a method to efficiently scan a restricted search area within the limited transmitter power and time in a bistatic radar and to track a series of transmitted pulses using the receiver beam which has ideally matched to the pulse propagation rate. In this paper, we have discussed the interrelationship between the pulse chasing and time and frequency/phase synchronization and described the effects of the identified system instability factors on two kinds of MTI filter configuration, single delay-line and double delay-line, in the bistatic radar. And also, we have confirmed that the overall system improvement is restricted by a lower improvement factor among identified them, and discussed the allowable tolerance of the time and frequency/phase synchronization in the bistatic system.

In this paper, three kinds of beam coupling losses which occur in a quasi-optics circuit for millimeter wave receiver system have been intensively investigated. First, the beam coupling losses which are caused by mismatch of beam waists radii and their positions between those of one and the other have been evaluated. It shows that beam coupling losses due to mismatch of beam waists radii and their positions between two quasi-optics circuits can be minimized if beam waist radius is chosen as larger than 3 times the operation wavelength. Second, the beam coupling losses have been studied when the axis of propagation of one beam is tilted with respect to that of the other beam. It is noted that smaller beam waist radius results in greater tolerance to tilts and angular misalignments. Third, the beam coupling cases in which two beams are offset if their axes of propagation are parallel but one is displaced relative to the other have been investigated. It is confirmed that beam waists radii with larger than 3 times operation wavelength are less sensitive to lateral offsets.
