  • The machinability of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and tool wear behavior in machining of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy was studied to understand the machining characteristics. This material is one of the strong candidate materials in present and future aerospace or medical applications. Recently, their usage has already been broaden to everybody's commercial applications such as golf heads, finger rings and many decorative items. To anticipate the general use of this material and development of the titanium alloys in domestic facilities, the review and the study of the machining parameters for those alloys are necessary. This study is concentrated to the machining parameters of the Ti-6A1-4V alloy due to their dominant position in the production of titanium alloys.

  • Phase mixtures of Titanium boride, nitride, and carbide powder were produced by the reduction of a mixture of titanium and boron oxides with carbon via a gas-solid phase reaction. Boron oxides produce a vapour phase or decompose to a metal sub-oxide gaseous species when reduced at elevated temperature. The mechanism of BO sub-oxide gas formation from $B_2O_3$ and its subsequent reduction to titanium diboride for the production of uniform size hexagonal platelets is explained. These gaseous phases are critical for the formation of boride, nitride and carbide ceramics. For the production of ceramic phase composite microstructures, the nitrogen partial pressure was the most critical factor. Some calculated equilibrium phase fields has been verified experimentally. The theoretical approach therefore identifies conditions for the formation of phase mixtures. The thermodynamic and kinetic factors that govern the phase constituents are also discussed.

  • A theoretical study of the electronic structures of $TiC_{1-x}$ and $Ti_{1-x}W_xC$ (x = 0, 0.25) is presented. The density of states and crystal orbital overlap population calculations were used to interpret variations of elastic properties induced by carbon vacancies and alloying substitutions. Our results show why the introduction of vacancies into TiC reduces bulk moduli, while W substitution at a Ti site increases the elastic modulus. The effect of the point defects on the bonding in TiC is investigated by means of extended Huckel tight-binding band calculations.

  • Ultrafine titanium carbide particles were synthesized by the reaction of liquid-magnesium and vaporized TiCl$_{4}$+C$_{x}$Cl$_{4}$(x = 1 and 2) solution. Fine titanium carbide particles with about 50 nm were successfully produced by combining Ti and C atoms released by chloride reduction of magnesium, and vacuum was then used to remove the residual phases of MgCl$_{2}$ and excess Mg. Small amounts of impurities such as O, Fe, Mg and Cl were detected in the product, but such problem can be solved by more precise process control. The lattice parameter of the product was 0.43267 nm, near the standard value. With respect to the reaction kinetics, the activation energy for the reactions of TiCl$_{4}$+C$_{2}$Cl$_{4}$and Mg was found to 69 kJ/mole, which was about half value against the use of TiCl$_{4}$+CCl$_{4}$, and such higher reactivity of the former contributed to increase the stoichiometry until the level of TiC$_{0.96}$ and decrease the free carbon content below 0.3 wt.%.

  • The standrd electrolyte for the electrodeposition of chromium were preparwith reagent grade chromic acid(200g/L), sulfuric acid(pH=1.8)and oxalic acalic acid(640g/L)as additive. Carbon content in chromium plating varied about2.0-3.8 wt% with current density and temperatures of the bath. The hardeness of chromium platings incresed with increasing the annealing temperatures and showed maximum value of about Hv 1700 after annealing at$ 700^{\circ}C$for 60min. But, decreased it as annealing at above $700^{\circ}C$. The reason for varing thee hardness of chromium codeposited with carbon gradually foumed chromium carbide(Cr7C3), but that changed to Cr23C6 as annealing temperature at above $^700{\circ}C$. The X-ray diffraction pattern indicated that chromium carbides, such as Cr7C3 or Cr3C2, formed at formed at above $300^{\circ}C$. titanium coating sputtered on the on surface of chromium plating had performed and determined the hardness after annealing at 500, 600, $700^{\circ}C$ for 60min. the maximum hardeness was about Hv 2400 as annealing at $700^{\circ}C$. The titanium carbide formed in layer was identified by X-ray diffraction. It was confirmed that chromium and titanium carbide has effect of increasing the hardness.

  • In the present study, the focus is on the synthesis of titanium carbide/cobalt composite powder by the spray thermal conversion process using metallic salt solution as the raw materials. Two types of oxide powders of Ti-Co-O system were prepared by the spray drying of two types of metallic salt solutions : titanium chloride-cobalt nitrate and $TiO_2$ powder-cobalt nitrate solutions. These oxide powders were mixed with carbon black, and then these mixtures were carbothermal reduced under a flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase structure and thermal gravity of the mixtures during carbothermal reduction were analysed using XRD and TG-DTA. In the case of using the titanium chloride-cobalt nitrate solution, it could not be obtained TiC/Co composite powder due to contamination of the impurities during the spray drying of the solution. However, in tile case of using the $TiO_2$ powder-cobalt nitrate scullion, TiC-15 wt. %Co composite powder could be synthesized by the spray thermal conversion process. The synthesized TiC-15 wt. %Co composite powder at 120$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours has average particle size of 150 nm.

  • In the present study, the focus is on the analysis of carbothermal reduction of the titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder by solid carbon for the optimizing synthesis process of ultra fined TiC/Co composite powder. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was prepared by the combination of the spray drying and desalting processes using the titanium dioxide powder and cobalt nitrate as the raw materials. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was mixed with carbon black, and then this mixture was carbothermally reduced under a flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase structure and thermal gravity of the mixture during carbothermal reduction were analysed using XRD and TGA. The synthesized titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder has a mixture of $TiO_2$ and $CoTiO_3$. This oxide powder was transformed to a mixed state of titanium car-bide and cobalt by solid carbon through four steps of carbothermal reduction steps with increasing temperature; reduction of $CoTiO_3$ to $TiO_2$ and Co, reduction of $TiO_2$, to the magneli phase($Ti_nO_{2n-1}$, n>3), reduction of the mag-neli phase($Ti_nO_{2n-1}$, n>3) to the $Ti_nO_{2n-1}$(2$\leq$n$\leq$3) phases, and reduction and carburization of the $Ti_nO_{2n-1}$(2$\leq$n$\leq$3) phases to titanium carbide.

  • This work was intended to modify the solidification structure of high speed steel roll material for hot strip mill, by the introduction of alloying elements designed to form primary carbide dispersions via melt treatment procedure. Solidification structure was modified by the melt treatment with titanium and distribution. This modifying effect could be attributed to the fact that the nuclie formed at high temperature upon inoculation induce the formation of fine equiaxed grain and primary carbide during solification, which is also likely to be responsible for the fact that TiC acts as effective nuclie for primary VC solidification.
