This paper is intended to propose what manufacturing configuration (manufacturing planning and shop floor control) is suitable for the tire industry. Basically tire-manufacturing process is mixed-products, parallel-disconnected-flow-shop. Both throughput time and cycle tine are very short, the variety of tires is very high, the setup time is long, shop floor data reporting requirements is high, and there are many equipments and people working. And with no exception, tire industry also now confronts increasing requirements of delivery conformance with the above peculiar characteristics of tire manufacturing and changing market environments, this paper suggests, weekly master scheduling with no MRP is desirable and traditional kanban is right selection for shop floor control/scheduling. This paper describes why this configuration should be, using the manufacturing engineering principles and some new insights like four primitives of parallel flow shop. Generally known that shop with high parallel-product-mix and long setup time isn't good candidate for kanban. The four primitives of parallel flow shop explain why kanban is also useful scheduling technique in that environment.
The condition of tire tread is a key parameter closely related to the driving safety of a vehicle, which affects the contact force of the tire for braking, accelerating and cornering. The major factor influencing the contact force is tread wear, and the more tire tread wears out, the higher risk of losing control of a vehicle exits. The tire tread condition is generally checked by visual inspection that can be easily forgotten. In this paper, we propose the intelligent tire (iTire) system that consists of an acceleration sensor, a wireless signal transmission unit and a tread classifier. In addition, we also presents classification algorithm that transforms the acceleration signal into the frequency domain and extracts the features of several frequency bands as inputs to an artificial neural network. The artificial neural network for classifying tire wear was designed with an Multiple Layer Perceptron (MLP) model. Experiments showed that tread wear classification accuracy was over 80%.
The authors conducted field experiments of frost heave to evaluate a method for reducing frost susceptibility using granulated used-tire mixture for 3 winters. Qualitative analyses for the evaluation of restraint effect of frost susceptibility by utilizing granulated used-tire soil mixture were conducted with the segregation potential concept and frost heave ratio. By mixing soil with granulated tire, the frost susceptibility was decreased drastically. From the result of the analyses, it was confirmed that granulated tire is an excellent material in controlling the frost susceptibility.
Materials Industry has a very large ripple effect on national economic development. Nevertheless, Korea has been passing over importance of this Industry. So, this study examined competitiveness on ten chief exporting items to U.S.A market based on the understanding of vital role of materials industry in the national economy. Analyzing methods were Market Share, Trade Specialization Index(TSI), and Market Comparative Advantage(MCA) and the data were collected through parts and materials statistical data which produced by Korean Commerce and Industry Minister. From this study, following results were found. i) Highly ranked items of U.S.A market share were chemical fiber drapery weaving, synthetic fiber. These items commanded over 10% share of the same market and tire, steel wire occupied 9.05%, 8.65% respectively. ii) In searching trade balance aspects through TSI, tire and steel wire secured very powerful competitiveness among examined items in trading with U.S.A. while synthetic resins and other plastic material were very weak competitiveness in the same market. iii) Analysis results of market competitiveness by MCA, indicated that chemical fiber drapery weaving, synthetic fiber and tire ensured high-powered competitiveness in U.S.A Market. Therefore, these items would be positioned as main items in the market.
As the technique of automobile industry is being advanced, the advancement of vehicle ride is being required. In order to achieve this purpose, the study on the vibration which are produced by moving vehicle is carried out actively. In this study, the tire vibration characteristics for passing over a cleat are analyzed. The model is verified against simulations and experiments. The tire is modeled with 7-DOFs (degree of freedom), and the effects of changing tire design parameters are considered. According to the results of analysis, the design parameters that reduce the tire and wheel vibration energy are conducted.

Rubber chemicals such as accelerators, antidegradants, vulcanizing agents, processing agents and retarders are very important to the production and protection of tires and rubber goods. The use of accelerators and antidegradants are evaluated in various tire components. This paper will focus on how to vulcanize tires economically and maintain the physical properties of each tire component without severe degradation due to oxygen, heat and ozone. Also, new non-nitrosoamine accelerators and non-staining antiozonants will be discussed. Lastly, the future requirements of antidegradants and accelerators in the tire industry will be reviewed. Tires have been vulcanized with Sulfenamides as primary accelerators and either Guamdine's or Thiurams as secondary accelerators to achieve proper properties at service conditions. However, interior components such as the carcass can be vulcanized with Thiazoles as a primary accelerator to cure faster than the external components. Using the combination of Sulfenamide with secondary accelerators in a tire tread compound and the combination of a Thiazole and Guanidine in a carcass compound will be presented with performance data. Uniroyal Chemical and another Rubber Chemical Manufacturer have developed, "Tetrabenzyl Thiuram Disulfide," (TBzTD) as a non-Nitrosoamine accelerator, which could replace Nitrosoamine generating Thiurams. This new accelerator has been evaluated in a tread compound as a secondary accelerator. Also, Flexsys has developed N-t-butyl-2-benzothiazole Sulfenamide (TBSI) as a non-Nitrosoamine accelerator which could replace 2-(Morpholinothio) -benzothiazole (MBS), a scorch delayed Sulfendamide accelerator. TBSI has been evaluated in a Natural Rubber (NR) belt skim compound vs. MBS. An optimum low rolling resistant cure system has been developed in a NR tread with Dithiomorpholine (DTDM). Also, future requirements for developing accelerators will be discussed such as the replacement of DTDM and other stable crosslink systems. Antidegradants are divided into two different types for use in tire compounds. Internal tire compounds such as apex, carcass, liner, wire breaker, cushion, base tread and bead compounds are protected by antioxidants against degradation from oxygen and heat due to mechanical shear. The external components such as sidewall, chafer and cap tread com-pounds are protected from ozone by antiozonants and waxes. Various kinds of staining and non-staining antioxidants have been evaluated in a tire carcass compound. Also, various para-phenylene diamine antiozonants have been evaluated in a tire sidewall compound to achieve the improved lifetime of the tire. New non-staining antiozonants such as 2, 4, 6-tris-(N-1, 4-dimethylpentyl-p-phenylene diamine) 1, 3, 5 Trizine (D-37) and un-saturated Acetal (AFS) will be discussed in the tire sidewall to achieve better appearance. The future requirements of antidegradants will be presented to improve tire performance such as durability, better appearance and longer lasting tires.

There are more than 15 millions cars or motors in Taiwan. According to the statistics from Environmental Protection Administration, the number of resulting scrap tires are near 110 thousand tons each year. The tire recycle programs in Taiwan were first conducted in 1989 and executed by ROC Scrap Tire Foundation. However, the current efficiency of the tire recycling industry still needs to be improved to minimize the environmental problem or fire hazards caused by scrap tires storage. Ten major tire-recycling factories are surveyed in this study. The investigations include the source of scrap tire, the shredding process, the market of products, the management of wastes disposal, and the difficulties of these sectors. As the varieties of the shredding machines of the recycle factories, there are three kinds of final products which include powder, granular, and chips. The wastes, wires and fibers, produced by the shredding process are the major problems fur all the factories. The percentage of the wire and fiber removal from rubbers still needs to be increased. The best approaches found in this study to increase the efficiency of scrap tire recycling processes are proposed which include the improvement of magnetic separation system fiber/rubber separation system and the minimization of waste disposal. A categorized standard of the processing outputs is suggested as a reference for the decision-making of the tire-recycling factories.
