  • This paper presents development of carbon nanotube (CNT) tip modified by focused ion beam (FIB) and experimental results in non-contact mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM) using fabricated tip. We used an electric field which causes dielectrophoresis, to align and deposit CNTs on a conventional silicon tip. The morphology of the fabricated CNT tip was then modified into a desired shape using focused ion beam. We measured anodic aluminum oxide sample and trench structure to estimate the performance of FIB-modified tip and compared with those of conventional Si tip. We demonstrate that FIB modified tip in non contact mode had superior characteristics than conventional tip in the respects of wear, image resolution and sidewall measurement.

  • In this paper, a numerical simulation of three-dimensional flow field and heat transfer coefficient distribution are conducted for two types of gas turbine blade with plane and squealer tips. The numerical results show that gas turbine blade with squealer tip considerably changes the flow structures near the tip regions of pressure and suction sides, so the overall heat transfer coefficients on the tip and shroud with squealer tip are lower than those with the plane tip blade. Finally, the effect of tip gap clearance on the flow field and heat transfer characteristics are investigated.

  • The heat/mass transfer characteristics on the plane tip surface of a high-turning first-stage turbine rotor blade has been investigated by employing the naphthalene sublimation technique. The heat/mass transfer coefficient is measured for four tip clearance height-to-chord ratios of h/c = 1.0%, 2.0%, 3.0%, and 4% at the Reynolds number of $2.09{\times}105$. The result shows that at lower h/c, there exists a strong flow separation/re-attachment process, which results in severe thermal load along the pressure-side comer. As h/c increases, the re-attachment is occurred further downstream of the pressure-side comer with lower thermal load. At higher h/c, a pair of vortices on the tip surface near the leading edge are found along the pressure-side and suction-side comers, and the pressure-side tip vortex have significant influence even on the mid-chord local heat transfer.

  • Experiments were performed to see the effect of radial tip clearance on a turbopump inducer, which has two blades with inlet tip blade angle of 7.8 degree and tip solidity of 2.7. Hydraulic and cavitation tests were done for three cases of tip clearance ratio, that is, 0.026, 0.053, and 0.079. With increase in the tip clearance, inducer head and pressure on the inducer tip decreased. Attached cavitation and cavitation surge were found in the cavitation tests. In the attached cavitation one cell rotated at the same rotational speed as that of the inducer. Cavitation performance deteriorated with increase in the tip clearance. The level of casing vibration increased in the cavitation condition and the level was very high when the attached cavitation appeared.

  • Tip clearance loss is a limitation of the improvement of turbomachine performance. Previous studies show the Tip clearance loss is generated by the leakage flow through the tip clearance, and is roughly linearly proportional to the gap size. This study investigates the tip clearance effects on the performance of ducted propeller. The investigation was carried out by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) code CFX14.5. These simulations were carried out to determine the underlying mechanisms of the tip clearance effects. The calculations were performed at three different chosen advance ratios. Simulation results showed that the tip loss slope was not linearly at high advance due to the reversed pressure at the leading edge. Three type of vortical structures were observed in the tip clearance at different clearance size.

  • In this paper dynamic responses of an engine, which is supported by hydraulic mount, to throttle tip-in/tip out are analyzed. Because the hydraulic mounts have non-linearity which the characteristics of stiffness and damping vary with frequencies, it is difficult to analyze the dynamic behavior of an engine using general integral algorithms. Convolution integrals and relationships between unit impulse response functions and frequency response functions are therefore used to simulate the transient behavior of an engine indirectly. In time domain, impulse response functions are calculated by two-side discrete inverse Fourier transform of frequency response function achieved by Laplace transform of equations of motion. Considering the fact that the shapes of behavior of an engine simulated by the proposed method are in good agreement with test results, it is confirmed that the proposed method is very effective for the analysis of transient response to throttle tip-in/out of an engine with hydraulic mounts.

  • This paper presents leakage and performance characteristics of a tip-seal type scroll compressor, The performance of a scroll compressor is strongly dependent on the leak age across the compression pockets. However, literature for leakage characteristics of the tip seal type scroll compressor is very limited due to complex sealing mechanism. In the present study, a simulation study was executed to investigate the tip-seal type scroll compressor by considering leakages passing through flank and tip clearance. As a result, the leakage phenomena of the tip seal type scroll compressor as a function of discharge pressure, tip clearance, dimension of the tip seal were analyzed. Effects of leakage on the performance of the compressor were also clarified.

  • Purpose: The subcutaneous pocket graft of the thumb tip amputation across or proximal to the lunula is chosen in case of impossible microvascular anastomosis and in patient who strongly desired to preserve the thumb tip after failed replantation. Materials and Methods: Two patients who underwent a subcutaneous pocket graft for a thumb tip reconstruction between August 2008 and November 2009 were reviewed retrospectively. They were all males with a mean age at the time of surgery of 48 years and had sustained complete thumb tip amputations across or proximal to the lunula. In one case, the microsurgical replantation was not feasible and the other one revealed arterial insufficiency at the 7th day after microsurgical replantation. Results: Authors had experienced 2 cases of flaps which survived completely. The results of sensibility was good, the range of motion at interphalangeal joint and tip to tip pinch was acceptable and color mismatch and loss of thumb finger nail was unacceptable after more than 1 year follow up with conventional successful thumb tip replantation. Conclusion: The subcutaneous pocket graft could be chosen in thumb tip amputation in case of impossible microvascular anastomosis as well as who strongly desires to preserve thumb tip after failed replantation.

  • Concrete is a heterogeneous material containing many weaknesses such as micro-cracks, pores and grain boundaries. The crack growth mechanism and failure behavior of concrete structures depend on the plastic deformation created by these weaknesses. In this article the non-linear finite element method is used to analyze the effect of presence of micro pore near a crack tip on both of the characteristics of crack tip plastic zone (its shape and size) and crack growth properties (such as crack growth length and crack initiation angle) under pure shear loading. The FE Code Franc2D/L is used to carry out these objectives. The effects of the crack-pore configurations and the spacing between micro pore and pre-excising crack tip on the characteristics of crack tip plastic zone and crack growth properties is highlighted. Based on the obtained results, the relative distance between the crack tip and the micro pore affects in very significant way the shape and the size of the crack tip plastic zone. Furthermore, crack growth length and crack initiation angle are mostly influenced by size and shape of plastic zone ahead of crack tip. Also the effects of pore decrease on the crack tip by variation of pore situation from linear to perpendicular configuration. The critical position for a micro pore is in front of the crack tip.
