This paper addresses the frequency offset estimation problem in the presence of the timing error for OFDM systems. When the timing error exists, the correlation value used for the frequency offset estimation could be reduced significantly due to the timing error, resulting in considerable degradation in estimation performance. In this paper, using the coherence phase bandwidth (CPB) and a threshold, a novel frequency offset estimation scheme is proposed and based on which, an efficient timing error estimation scheme is also proposed for the re-estimation of the frequency offset. The performance comparison results show that the proposed frequency offset estimation scheme is not only more robust to the timing error but also has less computational complexity, as compared with the conventional schemes. It is also demonstrated by simulation that theproposed timing error estimation scheme gives a reliable estimate of the timing error.
In this paper, an improved timing synchronization method for OFDM system is proposed. In multipath fading channels, timing offset estimation algorithm based on simple correlation metric can cause inter-symbol interference (ISI). The proposed algorithm promises accurate timing offset estimation, which can be achieved by simple windowing. The estimation errors in several multipath channels are evaluated in computer simulations.
This paper proposes a joint timing synchronization, channel estimation, and data detection for the impulse radio ultra-wideband systems. The proposed timing synchronizer consists of coarse and fine timing estimation. The synchronizer discovers synchronization points in two stages and performs adaptive threshold based on the maximum pulse averaging and maximum (MAX-PA) method for more precise synchronization. Then, iterative channel estimation is performed based on the discovered synchronization points, and data are detected using the selective rake (S-RAKE) detector employing maximal ratio combining. The proposed synchronizer produces two signals-the start signal for channel estimation and the start signal for start frame delimiter (SFD) detection that detects the packet synchronization signal. With the proposed synchronization, channel estimation, and SFD detection, an S-RAKE receiver with binary pulse position modulation binary phase-shift keying modulation was constructed. In addition, an IEEE 802.15.4a channel model was used for performance comparison. The comparison results show that the constructed receiver yields high performance close to perfect synchronization.

This paper proposes an improved multi-stage timing offset estimation scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in multipath fading channel environment. The conventional multi-stage timing offset estimation scheme is very sensitive to the random multipath components. By exploiting the sample standard deviation of the cross-correlation values, the proposed scheme achieves a robustness to the random multipath components. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme has a higher correct estimation probability and has a better mean square error (MSE) performance than the conventional scheme in multipath fading channels.

Symbol timing error amounts to a major degradation in the system performance. Conventionally, timing error is estimated by predefined preamble on both transmitter and receiver. The maximum of the correlation result is considered the start of the OFDM symbol. Problem arises when the prime path is not the strongest one. In this paper, we propose a new combined time and channel estimation method for multi-band OFDM ultra wide-band (MB-OFDM UWB) systems. It is assumed that a coarse timing has been obtained at a stage before the proposed scheme. Based on the coarse timing, search interval is set (or time candidates). Exploiting channel statistics that are assumed to be known by the receiver, we derive a maximum a posteriori estimate (MAP) of the channel impulse response. Based on this estimate, we discern for the timing error. Timing estimation performance is compared with the least squares (LS) channel estimate in terms of mean squared error (MSE). It is shown that the proposed timing scheme is lower in MSE than the LS method.

In this paper, we propose a timing offset estimation scheme for initial ranging of IEEE 802.16e systems. The conventional scheme estimates the timing offset by using the cross-correlation between the local and received signals only. On the other hand, this paper proposes a timing offset estimation scheme with additional cross-correlations accumulated on the conventional cross-correlation. The additional cross-correlations are obtained by using the ranging signal with a repetitive structure. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme provides the better timing offset estimation performance compared with that of the conventional scheme.
This paper addresses the problem of online hop timing detection and frequency estimation of multiple frequency-hopping (FH) signals with antenna arrays. The problem is deemed as a dynamic one, as no information about the hop timing, pattern, or rate is known in advance, and the hop rate may change during the observation time. The technique of particle filtering is introduced to solve this dynamic problem, and real-time frequency and direction of arrival estimates of the FH signals can be obtained directly, while the hop timing is detected online according to the temporal autoregressive moving average process. The problem of network sorting is also addressed in this paper. Numerical examples are carried out to show the performance of the proposed method.

The timing offset is one of the main error sources in estimating the frequency offset in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Although some works have been done to mitigate the influence of the timing offset on the frequency offset estimation, most of the investigations require the knowledge of the timing offset range, which is not generally available in practical systems. In this paper, we propose a new frequency offset estimation scheme using differential combining between two successive correlation samples, which does not require the knowledge of the timing offset range, and thus, is robust to the timing offset variation. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is not only robust to the timing offset variation, but also generally performs better than the conventional scheme on the average, in the case of the timing offset range being not known exactly.

In this paper, a blind hop timing and duration estimation scheme for FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) systems based on digital frequency discriminator and wavelet transform is proposed. The proposed scheme not only requires the lower hardware complexity but also shows superior estimation performance compared to the previously proposed temporal correlation function based hop timing estimation scheme.

This letter deals with non-pilot-aided symbol timing estimation methods in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. To do this, OFDM system uses a frequency diversity scheme over two consecutive data symbols. Our approach can be viewed as an expansion of Schmidl's and Minn's correlation methods. Using the OFDM signal equipped with frequency diversity, however, symbol timing is accurately estimated without additional training symbol and a second-order diversity gain is achieved.
