The design, numerical simulation, and an experimental implementation of two-element cross-shaped microstrip line-fed printed slot array antenna for IMT-2000 at the 2.0 GHz band is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna with relative permittivity 4.3 and thickness 1.0mm is analyzed by the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method. It was shown that the measured 2.0 VSWR bandwidth of one-element microstrip slot antenna is from 1.42 GHz to 2.69 GHz, which is approximately 61.8% and that of two-element microstrip slot array antenna is from 1.42 GHz to 2.56 GHz, which is approximately 57.3% And it was shown that the measured gain of one-element microstrip slot antenna is 2.75 dBi and that of two-element microstrip slot antenna is 4.75 dEi. The antennas were fabricated and tested. The measured results are in good agreements with the FDTD results.

In this paper, a T-shaped microstrip feed line is proposed for a better impedance matching to the microstrip slot antenna in a various range of slot widths. It was found that the bandwidth of this antenna is proportional to the slot width. It was also found that the radiation resistance of this feed line structure is quite constant and low regardless to the slot width. A slot antenna with T-shaped microstrip feed line is analyzed by using the FDTD method. At first, the propagation process of the reflected wave and the electric field distribution in the time domain is calculated respectively. The antenna parameters also are optimized to get maximum band width, return loss, input impedance, and radiation pattern in the frquency domain by Fourier transforming the time domain results. From the computed results, the optimum slot antenna is designed and fabricated. When the slot width is 16 mm, approximately 35% of bandwidths are obtained without a matching circuit. These computed results using FDTD method were in relatively good accordance with the measured values.
We propose a new mini-slot transmission scheme for a passive optical network (PON) in which each customer can be switched either to access mode or to internetworking mode dynamically. In this paper, we present the system implementation (called LAN-PON) as well as the performance of the proposed transmission scheme to illustrate its feasibility and benefits. A mini-slot scheme can rapidly reduce the queuing delay, which increases due to the flooding of the deflected packets in a deflection scheme. We evaluate the impact of mode switching time on the bandwidth gain (throughput) and delay of local area network (LAN) traffic in the LAN-PON with a mini-slot scheme. We also analyze a theoretical delay model of the proposed scheme. The simulation results demonstrate that switching time has an impact on LAN performance, and the average packet delay of the proposed scheme is significantly improved compared to that of the deflection scheme.

This article provides a time-resolved characterisation of the wind field in a recently-commissioned, downdraft outflow simulator at The University of Western Ontario. A large slot jet approach to physical simulation was used. The simulator performance was assessed against field observations from a 2002 downdraft outflow near Lubbock, Texas. Outflow wind speed records were decomposed according to classical time series analysis. Length scales, characterising the coarse and fine flow structure, were determined from the time-varying mean and residual components, respectively. The simulated downdraft outflow was approximately 1200 times smaller in spatial extent than the 2002 Lubbock event.
In this paper, an algorithm that provisions proportional differentiation of packet delays is proposed with an objective for enhancing quality of service (QoS) in future packet networks. It features an adaptive scheme that adjusts the target delay every time slot to compensate the deviation from the target delay which is caused by the prediction error on the traffic to be arrived in the next time slot. It predicts the traffic to be arrived at the beginning of a time slot and measures the actual arrived traffic at the end of the time slot. The difference between them is utilized to the delay control operation for the next time slot to offset it. As it compensates the prediction error continuously, it shows superior adaptability to the bursty traffic as well as the exponential rate traffic. It is demonstrated through simulations that the algorithm meets the quantitative delay bounds and shows superiority to the traffic fluctuation in comparison with the conventional non-adaptive mechanism. The algorithm is implemented with VHDL on a Xilinx Spartan XC3S1500 FPGA and the performance is verified under the test board based on the XPC860P CPU.

In this paper, the conventional anti-collision algorithms, such as Channel Monitoring algorithm and Pulse Protocol algorithm are analyzed. To decrease tag identification time, and increase system throughput and efficiency, we propose a new reader anti-collision algorithm, Pulse Protocol-based Hybrid Reader Anti-collision Algorithm, using Slot-occupied Probability under dense reader environment. The proposed algorithm uses Slot-occupied Probability to improve the performance of Pulse Protocol Algorithm. That is, A reader checks Slot-occupied Probability after generating random backoff time. If Slot-occupied Probability is greater than 0, it uses another new random backoff time to avoid reader collision. We also compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with those of Channel Monitoring and Pulse Protocol algorithms in respect of identification time system throughput, and system efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has an increment of 5% of identification time and system throughput as increasing the number of readers.

A new WDM-based protocol for scheduling a variable-length message is proposed in this paper. Two control slots, Pre-reservation slot and Reservation Slot, are used to coordinate transmission and diminish the collisions of packet to minimize the access delay. When there is an idle reservation slot, a control packet is transmitted on that slot and message is transferred. And the node continues to transmit its control packet through the corresponding slot every cycle, until the message is completely transmitted. If an idle reservation slot is not available, the node schedules the transmission time of message in earliest available time using Pre-reservation slots. The proposed scheduling protocol has several advantages; any new node can join the network anytime without network re-initialization. Moreover, with the pre-reservation slots, we can avoid the packet collisions and destination conflicts, and we can improve the access delay time for message transmissions.

Squirrel cage induction motors have mostly been used for their small capacity because the starting torque is smaller than the starting current during start-up. However, as more and more mid-to-large capacity motors are developed, the demands for improvements in performance characteristics have also increased. In this study, the starting characteristics of squirrel cage induction motors were analyzed based on the rotor materials and shapes using a finite element method to provide design data suitable for different use purposes and capacities. We further completed analysis by combining electromagnetic equations deduced from Maxwell’s equations and the circuit equations of stators and rotors. A moving coordinator was introduced to rotate the rotor during the analysis, and the torques calculated via the finite element method were combined with the motion equations to calculate the position and angular velocity of the rotors at the next time, thereby analyzing the transient characteristics. The analysis results of the transient characteristics were applied to a 3-phase 4-pole 5-hp induction motor to calculate the starting torque, speed, and rotation angle of the rotors. In the reference model, the materials and shapes of the rotor slot were changed to copper and silicon copper and a deep slot, shallow slot, and long-neck-shaped slot.

In this paper, we analyze a traffic control schemes at the interworking unit(IWU) of the IEEE 802.6 DQDB MAN and the B-ISDN, and estimate its performance via computer simulation. We also study traffic management, relaying sublayers for the cases of four service classes defined in the B-ISDN. As for performance criteria, we consider slot waiting time, slot loss rate, and the fairness between DQDB nodes in access networks. We propose a simple control algorithm that decreases the waitint delay at the OWU. With the buffer size of 40 [slots] at the IWU, we have found that the slot loss rate was nearly zero at traffic load below 0.9, and the slot waiting time became less than 15 slot times.
