The dispersion of Lagrangian fluid particles in a turbulent channel flow is studied by a direct numerical simulation. Four points Hermite interpolation in the homogeneous direction and Chebyshev polynomials in the inhomogeneous direction is adopted by assesing the acceleration of fluid particles. In order to characterize the inhomogeneous Lagrangian statistics, accurate single particle Lagrangian statistics are obtained along the wall normal direction. Integral time scales of Lagrangian velocity can be normalized by Eulerian mean shear stresses.
An experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in an axisymmetric annuli. The swirl angle measurements were performed by flow visualization technique using smoke and dye liquid. Using the Particle Image Velocimetry method, this study found the time-mean velocity distribution and turbulent intensity with swirl for Re = 20,000, 30,000, 50,000, and 70,000 along longitudinal sections and the results appear to be physically reasonable.
Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were carried out to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a rectangular cylinder with side ratio B/D=5 at Reynolds number Re=22,000 (based on cylinder thickness). Particular attention was devoted to the effects of velocity shear in the oncoming flow. Time-averaged and unsteady flow patterns around the cylinder were studied to enhance understanding of the effects of velocity shear. The simulation results showed that the Strouhal number has no significant variation with oncoming velocity shear, while the peak fluctuation frequency of the drag coefficient becomes identical to that of the lift coefficient with increase in velocity shear. The intermittently-reattached flow that features the aerodynamics of the 5:1 rectangular cylinder in non-shear flow becomes more stably reattached on the high-velocity side, and more stably separated on the low-velocity side. Both the mean and fluctuating drag coefficients increase slightly with increase in velocity shear. The mean and fluctuating lift and moment coefficients increase almost linearly with velocity shear. Lift force acts from the high-velocity side to the low-velocity side, which is similar to that of a circular cylinder but opposite to that of a square cylinder under the same oncoming shear flow.
This paper presents flow characteristics of a sweeping jet issued by a feedback-free fluidic oscillator. Overall flow characteristics of feedback-free sweeping jet (FFSJ) were analyzed using flow visualization. The feedback-free sweeping jet has a sinusoidal external flow pattern. The oscillating frequency of the FFSJ is three times higher than that of a conventional sweeping jet at the same Reynolds number. Flow structure and turbulence characteristics were investigated using time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV). In instantaneous velocity fields, the flow did not stay at ends but changed the direction continuously in contrast to the conventional sweeping jet. Velocity distributions at each plane which were extracted from mean velocity field has Gaussian distribution, which is similar with a circular jet. The sweep angles were constant as 45° at all Reynolds numbers in the high flow rate regime.
This paper concerns closed hypersurfaces of dimension $n{\geq}2$ in the hyperbolic space ${\mathbb{H}}_{\kappa}^{n+1}$ of constant sectional curvature evolving in direction of its normal vector, where the speed equals a power ${\beta}{\geq}1$ of the mean curvature. The main result is that if the initial closed, weakly h-convex hypersurface satisfies that the ratio of the biggest and smallest principal curvature at everywhere is close enough to 1, depending only on n and ${\beta}$, then under the flow this is maintained, there exists a unique, smooth solution of the flow which converges to a single point in ${\mathbb{H}}_{\kappa}^{n+1}$ in a maximal finite time, and when rescaling appropriately, the evolving hypersurfaces exponential convergence to a unit geodesic sphere of ${\mathbb{H}}_{\kappa}^{n+1}$.
A visualization study to evaluate bubble motion in a tab water filled cylindrical tank with a varying flow rate of compressed air is conducted. The flow rate of compressed air varies from 1 to 5 L/min. Time resolved images are acquired by a high speed camera in 10 bit gray level at 100 fps and the measurement volume is irradiated by a 230 W halogen lamp. It is observed that there are three different regions; the bubble formation region, the rising bubble region and the free surface region. During the rise of bubble, the shape is changed as if an elastic body. Based on the binarized bubble image, the mean diameters of rising bubbles are estimated at beneath of the free surface. As the gas flow rate increases, the mean diameter is increased and the rising velocity also increases with buoyancy force.

An experimental study is performed on the turbulent swirling flow behind a crcular cylinder using 2-D PIV technique. The Reynolds numbers investigated are 10.000, 15,000. 20.000 and 25.000. The mean velocity vector, time mean axial velocity, turbulence intensity, kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress behind the cylinder are measured before and behind the cylinder along the test tube. A comparison is included without swirling flow behind a circular and square cylinder. The recirculation zones are shown unsymmetric profiles.
In this study, nonlinear vibrations and dynamic instabilities of a smart embedded micro shell conveying varied fluid flow and subjected to the combined electro-thermo-mechanical loadings are investigated. With the aim of designing new hydraulic sensors and actuators, the piezoelectric materials are employed for the body and the effects of applying electric field on the stability of the system as well as the induced voltage due to the dynamic behavior of the system are studied. The nonlocal piezoelasticity theory and the nonlinear cylindrical shell model in conjunction with the energy approach are utilized to mathematically modeling of the structure. The fluid flow is assumed to be isentropic, incompressible and fully develop, and for more generality of the problem both steady and time dependent flow regimes are considered. The mathematical modeling of fluid flow is also carried out based on a scalar potential function, time mean Navier-Stokes equations and the theory of slip boundary condition. Employing the modified Lagrange equations for open systems, the nonlinear coupled governing equations of motion are achieved and solved via the state space problem; forth order numerical integration and Bolotin's method. In the numerical results, a comprehensive discussion is made on the dynamical instabilities of the system (such as divergence, flutter and parametric resonance). We found that applying positive electric potential field will improve the stability of the system as an actuator or vibration amplitude controller in the micro electro mechanical systems.

An application of the cross correlation technique by adopting ultrasonic waves for water pipe flow measuring purpose is studied. It is a non-intrusive flow metering method by determining the time of the flight of the flow turbulent noise and its non-obstructing mechanism enables to reduce process energy loss due to the flowmeter obstruction. A digital signal processor for the purpose of the real time Fourier transform was employed for the fast time calculation of the flow velocity. The overall accuracy was found as about $1\%$ for flow velocities from 0.25 m/s up to 16 m/s and for the pipe inside diameters from 50mm to 248mm. The cross correlation technique can be used for the tap water utility including most common liquid flows.

Performance analysis of NTT/BT protocol is investigated, which is a GFC (Generic Flow Control) ptotocol in ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode ) network and is based on cyclic reset mechanism. THe mean cell delay time is proposed as a performance measure of NTT/BT protocol. The mean cell delay time is defined as the duration from the instant the cell arrives at the transmission buffer until the cell is fully transmitted. The process of cell transmission can be described as a single server queueing modle with two dependent services. By utilizing this model, mean cell delay time is obtained and sensitivity of the factors such as window size and reset period is also analysed.
