  • Soils consist of an assemblage of particles with different sizes and shapes which form a skeleton whose voids are filled with water and air. Hence, soil behaviour must be analyzed by incorporating the effects of the transient flow of the pore-fluid through the voids, and therefore requires a two-phase continuum formulation for saturated porous media. The present paper presents briefly the Biot's basic theory of dynamics of saturated porous media with u-P formulation to determine the responses of pore fluid and soil skeleton during cyclic loading. Kelvin elements are attached to transmitting boundary. The Pastor-Zienkiewicz-Chan model has been used to describe the inelastic behavior of soils under isotropic cyclic loadings. Newmark-Beta method is employed to discretize the time domain. The response of fluid-saturated porous media which are subjected to time dependent loads has been simulated numerically to predict the liquefaction potential of a semi-infinite saturated sandy layer using finite-infinite elements. A settlement of 17.1 cm is observed at top surface. It is also noticed that liquefaction occurs at shallow depth. The mathematical advantage of the coupled finite element analysis is that the excess pore pressure and displacement can be evaluated simultaneously without using any empirical relationship.

  • This study was carried out to determine the optimal number of ARGO floats in the East Sea in order to maximize their applications. The dominant spatio-temporal scale, size of the domain, and the typical float lifetimes in the East Sea were taken into consideration. The mean spatial de-correlation scale of temperature on isobaric surfaces reaches about 60 km. The minimum necessary number of floats is about 82 on average in order to secure independent ARGO profiles with the de-correlation scale. Considering the float lifetimes, about 27 floats per year should be deployed to maintain the 82 ARGO float array every year. To obtain spatially uniform distribution of ARGO float data, mean residence time and dispersion rate (basin area/residence time) of ARGO floats were evaluated in each basin of the East Sea. A faster (slower) dispersion rate requires more (less) ARGO floats to maintain the spatially uniform number of floats. According to the analysis, it is likely that the optimal ratio of the number of floats for each basin is 1:2:4 corresponding to Ulleung Basin:Yamato Basin:Japan Basin. In order to maintain relatively uniform ARGO observing networks, it is necessary to establish a long-term plan for deployment strategy based on float pathways and the dispersion rate parameters estimated by using currently active ARGO float trajectory data as well as reanalysis data.

  • Configuration is a set of building block processes, a series of selection and combining parts or components which composes a whole thing. A whole thing could be such a configurable object as manufacturing product, network system, financial portfolio, system development plan, project team, etc. Configuration problem could happen during any phase of product life cycle: design, production, sales, installation, and maintenance. Configuration has long been one of cost and time consuming work, because only high salaried technical experts on product and components can do configuration. Rework for error adjustments of configurations at later process causes far much cost and time, so accurate configuration is required. Under the on-line electronic commerce environment, configuration problem solving becomes more important, because component-based sales should be done automatically on the merchant web site. Automated product search, order placement, order fulfillment and payment make that manual configuration is no longer feasible. Automated configuration means that all the constraints among components should be checked and confirmed by configuration engine automatically. In addition, technical constraints and customer preferences like price range and a specific function required should be considered. This paper gives an brief overview of configuration problems: characteristics, representation paradigms, and solving algorithms and introduce CRSP(Constraint and Rule Satisfaction Problem) method. CRSP method adopts both constraint and rule for configuration domain knowledge representation. A survey and analysis on web sites adopting configuration functions are provided. Future directions of configuration for EC is discussed in the three aspects: methodology itself, companies adopting configuration function, and electronic commerce industry.

  • The main purpose of this study is to discuss the design wind loads for the structural frames of single-layer latticed domes with long spans. First, wind pressures are measured simultaneously at many points on dome models in a wind tunnel. Then, the dynamic response of several models is analyzed in the time domain, using the pressure data obtained from the wind tunnel experiment. The nodal displacements and the resultant member stresses are computed at each time step. The results indicate that the dome's dynamic response is generally dominated by such vibration modes that contribute to the static response significantly. Furthermore, the dynamic response is found to be almost quasi-static. Then, a series of quasi-static analyses, in which the inertia and damping terms are neglected, is made for a wide range of the dome's geometry. Based on the results, a discussion is made of the design wind load. It is found that a gust effect factor approach can be used for the load estimation. Finally, an empirical formula for the gust effect factor and a simple model of the pressure coefficient distribution are provided.

  • We introduced an approach of modeling of a sound absorbing medium that had different absorbing coefficient according to frequency. To obtain the time domain result of the frequency characteristics of a sound absorbing medium, transmission line matrix modeling was used. To input sound absorbing effect in TLM modeling, we added a FIR filter at a node instead of absorbing component using resistance component. There were simulated the characteristics of time-shift, low pass filter, high pass filter using the FIR filter with 7-tap coefficients, then compared with theoretical results. From various simulation results, we could find that added FIR filter coefficient in TLM modeling was an useful way to model a sound absorbing medium.

  • Environmental issues and the need to reduce energy consumption for lowering operating costs have pushed power efficiency to become one of the major issues of current research in the field of wireless networks. This paper addresses a number of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) precoding and scheduling techniques across the PHY and MAC layers that can operate under a reduced link budget and collectively improve the transmit power efficiency of a base station, while maintaining the same levels of service. Different MIMO transmission and precoding schemes proposed for LTE, achieving varying degrees of multiuser diversity in both the time, frequency as well as the space domain, are examined. Several fairness-aware resource allocation algorithms are applied to the considered MIMO schemes and a detailed analysis of the tradeoffs between power efficiency and quality of service is presented. This paper explicitly examines the performance of a system serving real-time, VoIP traffic under different traffic loading conditions and transmit power levels. It is demonstrated that by use of efficient scheduling and resource allocation techniques significant savings in terms of consumed energy can be achieved, without compromising QoS.

  • This paper reports the frequency characteristics and the time response of parallel adjacent-transmission lines, crossed adjacent-transmission lines and parallel adjacent-transmission lines which are on the different planes by using FDTD-PML method. In the parallel adjacent-transmission lines, the crosstalks as a function of horizontal distance are calculated and in the crossed adjacent- transmission lines, the crosstalks as a function of vertical distance are simulated. Also, the crosstalks as functions of horizontal and vertical distances are measured and analyzed in the parallel adjacent-transmission lines which are on the different planes.

  • The Perfectly Matched Layer(PML) provide good performance in absorption over a wide frequency range and is an appropriate ABC for waveguides with high dispersion. In this paper, a novel algorithm is proposed to improve the computational efficiency of the PML. In the input and output ports, the fields are decomposed into a series of modes, and then an appropriate ABC is applied to each mode. CPU time and memory storage requirements are greatly reduced, since the computational region is analyzed in one dimension. A WG-90 rectangular waveguide with a thick asymmetric iris is analyzed by Finite-Difference Time-Domain(FDTD) simulations with the conventional PML and the proposed one-dimensional (1-D) PML. Numerical results show that the computational efficiency is significantly improved by the proposed method.

  • Grounding is the art of making an electrical connection to the earth. In order to protect man, electrical and/or electric equipments from the lightning strokes, all the energy of lightning strokes must be diverted via a safe path to earth. It is essential to the transient grounding resistance against lightning strokes. In this paper, measurements and analyses of grounding surge impedance have been investigated. For measurements of grounding surge impedance the pulse generator was designed and fabricated. The pulse generator has rise time of 22.4 ns and pulse duration of $8\;{\mu}s$. The transient grounding resistance has been measuring by injecting low power and step current between the earthing system under test and a remote reference earth and measuring the potential rise caused by this current. As a result, the transient grounding resistance against lightning surge in the short time domain is much higher than steady state grounding resistance.

  • This paper is aimed to analyze the characteristics of simultaneous voltage, current and temperature signals for poor connection on electrical connector. In order to attain this purpose, detected were the current and voltage signals on electric wire with series arc, named arc signals, and also monitored were the changes of RMS, instantaneous value of waveform in time domain and temperature value with video. Two states are made normal state over $5kgf{\cdot}cm$ and poor connections state below $0.5kgf{\cdot}cm$ by screw gage. In the voltage signal case, the voltage drop was increased with which the current was increased. In the current signal case, poor connections at the time interval 1~4A all showed "shoulder", as distinct difference from the normal state shown waveform pattern. In the temperature signal case, poor connections are twice at 1A and five times at 4A in the normal state. The temperature continues insulation of electrical wiring and connector can be carbonized. The results of this study will be effectively used in developing the preventive devices and system for electric fire by poor connections.
