We investigate driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence by including the effects of expansion and collapse of background medium. The main goal is to quantify the evolution and saturation of strength and characteristic lengths of magnetic fields in expanding and collapsing media. Our findings are as follows. First, with expansion and collapse of background medium, the magnetic energy density per comoving volume does not saturate; either it keeps decreasing or increasing with time. The magnetic energy density relative to the kinetic energy density strongly depends on the expanding or collapsing rate. Second, at scales close to the energy injection (or driving) scale, the slope of magnetic field power spectrum shallows with expansion but steepens with collapse. Third, various characteristic lengths, relative to the energy injection scale, decrease with expansion but increase with collapse. We discuss the astrophysical implications of our findings.
This paper presents a novel and efficient method to calculate the critical point of voltage collapse. Conjugate gradient and modified Newton-Raphson methods are employed to calculate two pairs of multiple load flow solutions for two operating conditions, i.e., both +mode and -mode voltages for two loading conditions respectively. Then these four voltage magnitude-load data sets of the bus which is most susceptible to voltage collapse, are fitted to third order polynomial using Lagrangian interpolation in order to represent approximate nose curve (P-V curve). This nose curve locates first estimate of the critical point of voltage collapse. The procedure described above is repeated near the critical point and the new estimate will be very close to the critical point. The proposed method is tested for the eleven bus Klos-Kerner system, with good accuracy and fast computation time.

This paper presents various processes of dynamic voltage collapse which is initiated by various power system disturbances, and the impacts of dynamic voltage controllers. According to the analysis results, the composition of induction motors with short time constants affects the voltage collapse strongly. Also, it is proved that the addition of fast acting reactive compensation devices, such as SVC, at high reactive loss sensitivity($$\delta$$Q$$_luss/\delta$$P$$_L$$) buses could be one of the best countermeasure to escape the voltage collapse.

Recently, the demand for the optical cable is rapidly growing because the number of internee user increases and high speed internet data transmission is required. But the present optical cable winding systems has some serious problems such as pile-up and collapse of cable usually near the flange of the bobbin in the process of the cable winding. To reduce the pile-up collapse in a cable winding systems, a new guiding system is developed for a high-speed self-align cable winding. First of all, the winding mechanism was analyzed and synchronization logics for the motions of winding, traversing, and the guiding were created. A prototype cable winding systems was manufactured to validate the new guiding system and the suggested logic. Experiment results showed that the winding system with the developed guiding system outperformed the system without the guiding system in reducing pile-up and collapse in the high-speed winding.

Due to a heavy rain resulted from the global environmental change, collapse accidents happen annually and it is a tendency to increase the loss of life and economy. Thus, measures for the collapse of slope are required. If the slope can be simulated before cutting, the collapse can be predicted, and also the accident of the collapse can be minimized at the cost of recovery. This paper presents a simulation method of a slope which is important in cutting. The method is modeling and designing using Petri-Net and is implemented in the Windows XP using Arc GIS. Therefore, by means of cutting and reclamation based on GIS, this paper can contribute to saving a lot of time and money.
Masonry infills are normally considered as non-structural elements in design practice, therefore, the interaction between the bounding frame and the strength contribution of masonry infills is commonly ignored in the seismic analysis work of the RC frames. However, a number of typical RC frames with irregular distributed masonry infills have suffered from undesirable weak-story failure in major earthquakes, which indicates that ignoring the influence of masonry infills may cause great seismic collapse risk of RC frames. This paper presented the investigation on the risk of seismic collapse of RC frames with irregularly distributed masonry infills through a large number of nonlinear time history analyses (NTHAs). Based on the results of NTHAs, seismic fragility curves were developed for RC frames with various distribution patterns of masonry infills. It was found that the existence of masonry infills generally reduces the collapse risk of the RC frames under both frequent happened and very strong earthquakes, however, the severe irregular distribution of masonry infills, such as open ground story scenario, results in great risk of forming a weak story failure. The strong-column weak-beam (SCWB) ratio has been widely adopted in major seismic design codes to control the potential of weak story failures, where a SCWB ratio value about 1.2 is generally accepted as the lower limit. In this study, the effect of SCWB ratio on inter-story drift distribution was also parametrically investigated. It showed that improving the SCWB ratio of the RC frames with irregularly distributed masonry infills can reduce inter-story drift concentration index under earthquakes, therefore, prevent weak story failures. To achieve the same drift concentration index limit of the bare RC frame with SCWB ratio of about 1.2, which is specified in ACI318-14, the SCWB ratio of masonry-infilled RC frames should be no less than 1.5. For the open ground story scenario, this value can be as high as 1.8.

In this paper a new equivalent static analysis method of dynamic behavior during progressive collapse is presented. The proposed analysis method uses the equivalent nodal load for the element stiffness which represents the dynamic behavior influence caused by the deletion of elements during progressive collapse analysis. The proposed analysis method improves the efficiency of progressive collapse analysis haying the iterative characteristic because the inverse of the structural stiffness matrix is roused in the reanalysis. By comparing the results obtained by this analysis method with those of GSA code analysis and time history analysis, it is shown that the results obtained by this analysis method more closely approach to those of time history analysis than by GSA code analysis.
This paper describes a probabilistic fracture mechanics (PFM) analysis based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. In the analysis of CANDU pressure tube, it is necessary to perform the PFM analyses based on statistical consideration of flaw generation time. A depth and an aspect ratio of initial semi-elliptical surface crack, a fracture toughness value, delayed hydride cracking (DHC) velocity, and flaw generation time are assumed to be probabilistic variables. In all the analyses, degradation of fracture toughness due to neutron irradiation is considered. Also, the failure criteria considered are plastic collapse, unstable fracture and crack penetration. For the crack growth by DHC, the failure probability was evaluated in due consideration of flaw generation time.

In this study, experiments were conducted to establish appropriate measures for slopes with high risk of collapse and to obtain results for minimizing slope collapse damage by detecting the micro-displacement of soil in advance by installing a laser sensor and a vibration sensor in the landslide reduction model experiment. Also, the behavior characteristics of the soil layer due to rainfall and moisture ratio changes such as pore water pressure and moisture were analyzed through a landslide reduction model experiment. The artificial slope was created using granite weathering soil, and the resulting water ratio(water pressure, water) changes were measured at different rainfall conditions of 200mm/hr and 400mm/hr. Laser sensors and vibration sensors were applied to analyze the surface displacement, and the displacement time were compared with each other by video analysis. Experiments have shown that higher rainfall intensity takes shorter time to reach the limit, and increase in the pore water pressure takes shorter time as well. Although the landslide model test does not fully reflect the site conditions, measurements of the time of detection of displacement generation using vibration sensors show that the timing of collapse is faster than the method using laser sensors. If ground displacement measurements using sensors are continuously carried out in preparation for landslides, it is considered highly likely to be utilized as basic data for predicting slope collapse, reducing damage, and activating the measurement industry.

In this paper, a method to calculate the ultimate compressive strength of welded one-sided stiffened plates simply supported along all edges is proposed. At first initial imperfections such as distortions and residual stresses due to welding are predicted by using simplified methods. Then, the collapse modes of the stiffened plate are assumed and collapse loads for each mode are calculated. Among these loads, the lowest value is selected as the ultimate strength of the plate. Collapse modes are assumed as follows ; (1) Overall buckling of the stiffened plate$\rightarrow$Overall collapse due to stiffener bending (2) Local buckling of the plate part$\rightarrow$Local collapse of the plate part$\rightarrow$Overall collapse due to stiffener yielding (3) Local buckling of the plate part$\rightarrow$Overall collapse due to stiffener berthing (4) Local buckling of the plate part$\rightarrow$Local collapse of the plate part$\rightarrow$Overall collapse due to stiffener tripping. The elastic large deflection analysis based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method is carried out, and plastic analysis assuming hinge lines is also carried out. Collapse load is defined as the cross point of the two analysis curves. This method enables the utimate strength to be calculated with small computing time and a good accuracy. Using the present method, characteristics of the stiffener including torsional rigidity, bending and tripping can also be clarified.
