  • Recently proposed control scheme for a stable teleoperation, which was based on two-port time-domain passivity approach[21], has been successful for a contact with high stiffness environments. However, we found several conservatisms during the contact with deformable environments and unconstrained motion. The two-port time-domain passivity controller was excessively dissipating energy even though it was not necessary for some cases of an unconstrained motion and soft contact. The main reason of those conservatisms was on the fact that the two-port time-domain passivity controller was activated without considering the amount of energy dissipation at the master and slave manipulators. Especially, the exclusion of the slave manipulator from the two-port was the dominant reason of the conservatisms. In this paper, we consider the amount of energy dissipation at slave manipulator for designing the time-domain passivity observer and controller. The measured interaction force between slave manipulator and environment allow the time-domain passivity observer to include the amount of energy dissipation at the slave manipulator. Based on the modified passivity observer, reference energy following method[24] is applied to satisfy the passivity condition in real-time. The feasibility of the developed methods is proved with experiments. Improved performance is obtained for an interaction with deformable environments and an unconstrained motion.

  • Recently, two-port time-domain passivity approach was modified for time-varying communication delay. The newly proposed approach could achieve stable teleoperation even under the serious time-varying delay and packet loss communication condition. However, after some operation hour, the accumulated energy difference between the input energy from one port and the output energy at the other port caused unstable behavior until the passivity controller is activated. Resetting scheme is introduced for solving this problem, and stable bilateral teleoperation can be guaranteed without worrying about the accumulated energy difference.

  • This paper presents a time domain approach for predicting buffeting response of long suspension bridges under skew winds. The buffeting forces on an oblique strip of the bridge deck in the mean wind direction are derived in terms of aerodynamic coefficients measured under skew winds and equivalent fluctuating wind velocities with aerodynamic impulse functions included. The time histories of equivalent fluctuating wind velocities and then buffeting forces along the bridge deck are simulated using the spectral representation method based on the Gaussian distribution assumption. The self-excited forces on an oblique strip of the bridge deck are represented by the convolution integrals involving aerodynamic impulse functions and structural motions. The aerodynamic impulse functions of self-excited forces are derived from experimentally measured flutter derivatives under skew winds using rational function approximations. The governing equation of motion of a long suspension bridge under skew winds is established using the finite element method and solved using the Newmark numerical method. The proposed time domain approach is finally applied to the Tsing Ma suspension bridge in Hong Kong. The computed buffeting responses of the bridge under skew winds during Typhoon Sam are compared with those obtained from the frequency domain approach and the field measurement. The comparisons are found satisfactory for the bridge response in the main span.

  • The paper deals with an approach to time domain simulation for closed end at the downstream of pipe, hydraulic lines terminating into a tank and series lines with change of cross sectional area. Time domain simulation of a fluid power systems containing hydraulic lines is very complex and difficult if the transfer functions consist of hyperbolic Bessel functions which is the case for the distributed parameter dissipative model. In this paper, the magnitudes and phases of the complex transfer functions of hydraulic lines are calculated, and the MATLAB Toolbox is used to formulate a rational polynomial approximation for these transfer functions in the frequency domain. The approximated transfer functions are accurate over a designated frequency range, and used to analyze the time domain response. This approach is usefully to simulate fluid power systems with hydraulic lines without to approximate the frequency dependent viscous friction.

  • Dynamic analyses for a suite of ground of motions were conducted on concrete gravity dam sections to examine the earthquake induced stresses and effective damping. For this purpose, frequency domain methods that rigorously incorporate dam-reservoir-foundation interaction and time domain methods with approximate hydrodynamic foundation interaction effects were employed. The maximum principal tensile stresses and their distribution at the dam base, which are important parameters for concrete dam design, were obtained using the frequency domain approach. Prediction equations were proposed for these stresses and their distribution at the dam base. Comparisons of the stress results obtained using frequency and time domain methods revealed that the dam height and ratio of modulus of elasticity of foundation rock to concrete are significant parameters that may influence earthquake induced stresses. A new effective damping prediction equation was proposed in order to estimate earthquake stresses accurately with the approximate time domain approach.

  • In the research of speech recognition, locating the beginning and end of a speech utterance in a background of noise is of great importance. Since the background noise presenting to record will introduce disturbance while we just want to get the stationary parameters to represent the corresponding speech section, in particular, a major source of error in automatic recognition system of isolated words is the inaccurate detection of beginning and ending boundaries of test and reference templates, thus we must find potent method to remove the unnecessary regions of a speech signal. The conventional methods for speech endpoint detection are based on two simple time-domain measurements - short-time energy, and short-time zero-crossing rate, which couldn't guarantee the precise results if in the low signal-to-noise ratio environments. This paper proposes a novel approach that finds the Lyapunov exponent of time-domain waveform. This proposed method has no use for obtaining the frequency-domain parameters for endpoint detection process, e.g. Mel-Scale Features, which have been introduced in other paper. Comparing with the conventional methods based on short-time energy and short-time zero-crossing rate, the novel approach based on time-domain Lyapunov Exponents(LEs) is low complexity and suitable for Digital Isolated Word Recognition System.

  • In this paper, modified two-port time-domain passivity approach is proposed for stable bilateral control of teleoperators under time-varying communication delay. We separate input and output energy at each port of a bilateral controller, and propose a sufficient condition for satisfying the passivity of the bilateral controller including time-delay. Output energy at the master port should be less than the transmitted input energy from the slave port with time-delay, and output energy at the slave port should be less than the transmitted input energy from the master port with time-delay. For satisfying above two conditions, two passivity controllers are attached at each port of the bilateral controller. A packet reflector with wireless internet connection is used to introduce serious time-varying communication delay of teleoperators. Average amount of time-delay was about 190(msec) for round trip, and varying between 175(msec) and 275(msec). Moreover some data packet was lost during the communication due to UDP data communication. Even under the serious time-varying delay and packet loss communication condition, the proposed approach can achieve stable teleoperation in free motion and hard contact as well.

  • This paper presents an all-direct domain decomposition approach for large-scale structural analysis. The proposed approach achieves computational robustness and efficiency by enforcing the compatibility of the displacement field across the sub-domain boundaries via local Lagrange multipliers and augmented Lagrangian formulation (ALF). The proposed domain decomposition approach was compared to the existing FETI approach in terms of the computational time and memory usage. The parallel implementation of the proposed algorithm was described in detail. Finally, a preliminary validation was attempted for the proposed approach, and the numerical results of two- and three-dimensional problems were compared to those obtained through a dual-primal FETI approach. The results indicate an improvement in the performance as a result of the implementing the proposed approach.

  • According to research currently developed by several authors (including the present ones) a multimode approach to the aeroelastic instability can be appropriate for suspension bridges with very long span and so with close natural frequencies. Extending that research, this paper deals in particular with: i) the role of along-wind modes, underlined also by means of the flutter mode representation; ii) the effects of a variation of the mean wind speed along the span. A characterisation of the response in the time domain by means of an energetic approach is also discussed.

  • This study concentrates on the second-order diffraction problem around circular cylinders in multi-frequency waves. The method of solution is a time-domain Rankine panel method which adopts a higher-order approximation for the velocity potential and wave elevation. In the present study, the multiple second-order quadratic transfer functions are extracted from the second-order time signal generated in random waves, and the comparison with other bench-mark test results shows a good agreement. This approach is directly applicable to prediction of nonlinear forces on offshore structures in random ocean.
