  • This study investigated the factors influencing married men's time allocation in housework. A multidimentional theoritical approach employing the perspectives of time availability, relative resourse, sex-role ideology was employed to explain variations in husbands' participation in housework. In addition, the effects of several socio-demographic variables were investigated. Data for 226 cases were gathered from using structured qustionnaire and time diary. Results indicated that the sex-role ideology perspective was significantly supported, and the time availability perspective was partially supported. • The purpose of this study was to explore the changes in adolescents' time use and time famine between 2004~2014. The data sources were the Time Use Surveys, which were conducted by the Korea National Statistical Office in 2004 and 2014. A total of 15,386 time diaries (9,008 from 2004, 6,378 from 2014) from adolescents aged between 10 and 18 were analyzed. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, t-test were used for the statistical analyses. The main findings were as follows: First, the necessary time of adolescents was more in 2014 compared to 2004. In particular, adolescents' sleeping time increased on Saturdays. Second, on weekdays and Saturdays, the school hours of adolescents was less in 2014 compared to 2004. But extra school hours of adolescents were more on Saturdays. Third, adolescents had more leisure time on Saturdays but less leisure time on Sundays in 2014 than 2004. Fourth, the average time famine score was lower in 2014 compared to 2004. Even so, the score for high school students was higher than 3 in 4 point Likert scale. This study provides a data-base on the well-being of adolescents and the education policies that affect them.

  • Historically, hawking/falconry refer to the hunting for pheasants, birds and hares using a hawk. In spite of its long history, not so many studies were found and/or have been performed. Examining researches, hawking has been enjoyed solely by the royal families until the early Joseon Dynasty but it has been popularly spread among the people in the 18th century, emphasizing recreational factors of it. The researches, however, dealt only with the limited data published by the government while a diary, Swaemirok written by Oh Hi-Mun, an intellectual in the 16th century noted the realities and characteristics of hawking at that time. According to the diary, hawking has been spread all over the country in the 16th century and the people as well as the royal families enjoyed it. The hawking season has been continued for a year except for summertime trees and plants grow thick. For the hawking, they need to be permitted officially or under a tacit consent. In those days, beef and pork are very rare. A peasant acted as, therefore, an excellent alternative and was served up for a religious service. In view of the truth, it could be stated that peasant-hawking was important for recreational activities as well as for their living.

  • This study focused on the time use of a dual-earner working group with preschool children on working and nonworking days using 2014 time-use survey data provided by Statistics Korea(KOSTAT). We collected the time-use data recorded in a 2,158 time diary. We divided the time use into 4 parts ; paid work, household labor work (including caring work), leisure and living essentials. For the statistical analysis, we used SPSS 18.0 packages, i.e., descriptive statistics, T-test, Anova with Duncan test and regression for the impact off the independent factors. The results verified gender differences in time use and recognized the usefulness of the time-allocation analysis for the diagnosis of Work and Life Balance(WLB). In the conclusion, we suggest increasing men's time allocation for household labor as a crucial solution to the WLB of dual-earner working groups. And the follow-up study should include the various factors that affect the time allocation of dual-earner groups, such as type of labor and job and children's ages.

  • This study aims to investigate how labour time pressure is associated with leisure selection and managing leisure hours, especially focusing on health related behavior issues. I have employed Time Diary data of 9,891 Korean respondents who were married and living in the cities and metropolitan area (female 51.8%, age range 20-69, average age=45.7). Leisure activities, as dependent variable, which were introduced in time diary data and the amount of time spent for such leisure were estimated. Results show that in time pressing situations(having long labour hours), leisure activities, and the hours spent for leisure tend to suffer. Especially, solitary leisure, like exercise or walking was very likely to sacrifice under time pressure. Moreover, in terms of sports or exercise, results suggest that not only time resource but also social and economic resources seemed to required for actually initiating the activity. Therefore, simply having more time (less tiome for work) may not be enough for promoting exercise for this population. Strategies and social policies that are aiming for promoting healthy behavior needs more closer look on leisure situation and people's desire for optimizing their time.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the patterns of time use between Korean and USA families. The data for 353 Seoul-based Korean families with two children living in Seoul and 130 USA families with two children living in the State of Utah were collected using a structured questionnaire and time diary. The major findings were as the following: 1. The Korean couples spent more time at personal care, paid work, and travel than the USA couples did, while the USA couples spent more time at housework and social-cultural activities than the Korean couples did. 2. The Korean wives spent more time doing food and clothing related housework than the USA wives did. Compared with the Korean wives, however, the time spent at house cleaning and management, family care and shopping and home management were longer than USA wives. The time U.S. husbands engaged in housework was much greater than by the Korean husbands. 3. Regardless of sex and school level, the Korean children spent less time at sleeping/rest, housework and socio-cultural activities and more time at eating and learning than those of U.S. These time use patterns of the families in both countries may reflect the differences of the cultural contexts, social norms, life styles, and the degrees of urbanization. To fully explain the findings, further study on the differences in social and cultural factors between the two countries is needed.

  • There are unique aspects of truck vehicle movements compared with the personal travel in trip chaining. This paper reports an analysis on the truck vehicle trip chaining which intercity/metropolitan/intraregional trips are classified. Data collected from the travel dairy survey is used the truck trip-chaining analysis. The pattern of trip chaining classes is classified by the GIS mapping based on orgin-destination trip information. The physical index and efficiency index for each trip diary is used to the truck vehicle activity. Truck trips lengths and time differs from its truck type, service type and travel patterns. It is shown that the efficiency of the truck trip chaining depends on vehicle types and its delivery patterns. There are many other topics for research on trip chaining modeling such as the classification of trip chain, time use and mode choice by trip chaining.
