We present a design and optical simulation of a cost-effective hybrid daylighting/LED system composed of mixing sunlight and light-emitting diode (LED) illumination powered by renewable solar energy for indoor lighting. In this approach, the sunlight collected by the concentrator is split into visible and non-visible rays by a beam splitter. The proposed sunlight collector consists of a Fresnel lens array. The non-visible rays are absorbed by the solar photovoltaic devices to provide electrical power for the LEDs. The visible rays passing through the beam splitters are coupled to a stepped thickness waveguide (STW) by tilted mirrors and confined by total internal reflection (TIR). LEDs are integrated at the end of the STW to improve the lighting quality. LEDs’ light and sunlight are mixed in the waveguide and they are coupled into an optical fiber bundle for indoor illumination. An optical sensor and lighting control system are used to control the LED light flow to ensure that the total output flux for indoor lighting is a fixed value when the sunlight is inadequate. The daylighting capacity was modeled and simulated with a commercial ray tracing software (LighttoolsTM). Results show that the system can achieve 63.8% optical efficiency at geometrical concentration ratio of 630. A required accuracy of sun tracking system achieved more than ±0.5o . Therefore, our results provide an important breakthrough for the commercialization of large scale optical fiber daylighting systems that are faced with challenges related to high costs.
The estimation of beam radiation intensity on a tilted surface is very important to the design of a solar energy system. In order to get the beam radiation intensity, it is required to calculate the ratio of the diffuse solar radiation to the global radiation ($k_d$). The data measured at Chung-Buk National University. Cheong-ju, (from May 16, 1985 to Nov, 10, 1987) were analysed to define the relationship between hourly clearness index ($k_t$) and diffuse ratio ($t_d$). The results are is follow: 1. The percent of clearness index($k_t$) of less than 0.3 and of more than 0.8 were 2.7% and 3.1% respectively, and between 0.5 and 0.8 was 76.5%. 2. The regression equation between $k_t$ and $k_d$ was an exponential function as: $$k_d=\[{1\hspace{120}:\hspace{10}(k_t<0.1)\\1.28{\times}0.074^{k_t}\hspace{30}:\hspace{10}(0.1{\leq}=k_t<0.9)\\0.12\hspace{98}:\hspace{10}(0.9{\leq}=k_t)$$ There was a little difference between the result. of this study based on the data of 30 months and the results of previous study (ITRA 2(1):42-47, 1986.) based on the data of 8 months. 3. The hourly exponential regression equation between $k_t$ and $k_d$ was $k_d=A{\times}8^{k_t}$ and the values of constant A and coefficient B of the: equations are as the following table; 4. The percent of $k_d$ of less than 0.4 was 72.9% and of more than 0.7 was 6.6%. 5. Total mean value of $k_t$ and $k_d$ wert 0.56 and 0.32, respectively. From 10:00 to 15:00 o'clock the total mean value of $k_t$ was smaller that the hourly man value of $k_t$ and the one or $k_d$ larger.

We reported the direct effect of intrinsic surface energy of dry adhesive material to the Van der Waals and capillary forces contributions of the total adhesion force in an artificial gecko-inspired adhesion system. To mimic the gecko foot we fabricated tilted nanohairy structures using both lithography and ion beam treatment. The nanohairy structures were replicated from Si wafer mold using UV curable polymeric materials. The control of nanohairs slanting angles was based on the uniform linear argon ion irradiation to the nanohairy polymeric surface. The surface energy was studied utilizing subsequent conventional oxygen ion treatment on the nanohairy structures which resulted in gradient surface energy. Our shear adhesion test results were found in good agreement with the accepted Van der Waals and capillary forces theory in the gecko adhesion system. Surface energy would give a direct impact to the effective Hamaker constant in Van der Waals force and the filling angle (${\varphi}$) of water meniscus in capillary force contributions of gecko inspired adhesion system. With the increasing surface energy, the effective Hamaker constant also increased but the filling angle decreased, resulting in a competition between the two forces. Using a simple mathematical model, we compared our experimental results to show the quantitative contributions of Van der Waals and capillary forces in a single adhesion system on both hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces. We found that the Van der Waals force contributes about 82.75% and 89.97% to the total adhesion force on hydrophilic and hydrophobic test surfaces, respectively, while the remaining contribution was occupied by capillary force. We also showed that it is possible to design ultrahigh dry adhesive with adhesion strength of more than 10 times higher than apparent gecko adhesion force by controlling the surface energy and the slanting angle induced-contact line of dry adhesive the materials.
We have investigated the effects of deposition angle on magnetic and magneto-optic properties in Co/Pt multilayer thin films. which were prepared bye-beam evaporation on tilted substrates. with varying tilt angle from $0^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$. The structure of the specimens was examined by x-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. and the magnetic and magneto-optical properties were measured by VSM, torque magnetometer, and Kerr loop tracer. X-ray diffractometry revealed that all of the specimens had multilayer structure and growth orientation of column followed the tangent rule but the crystallograpic orientation, <111>, was slightly deviated from the substrate normal even though the deposition angle was increased up to $60^{\circ}$. A decrement of the magnetization and Kerr angle with the deposition angle was related with that of the film density due to increasing porosity. The perpendicular mag¬netic anisotropy was also decreased with increasing the deposition angle.

A series-fed microstrip array antenna of beamwidth $10^{\circ}$, squint angle $80^{\circ}$ and SLL -15 dB below is designed. Series-fed arrays are formed by interconnecting all the elements by high-impedance transmission lines and feeding the power at the first element and it is a traveling-wave antenna which is terminated with a matched load. Radiation patterns and impedance matching of the antenna are analyzed by Ensemble 4.0, which is a popular software package for designing printed antennas and arrays. The squint angle of beam can be controlled by the spacing between the elements. The major advantages of series-fed array antennas are that feed arangement is compact and the losses associated with the feeding network are less than those of a corporate feed type. The antennas are fabricated on the RT/Duroid Laminates of 62 mil thickness. The experimental results are very close to the specifications to be designed.
This paper presents a S-band phased array antenna system for receiving LEO satellite telemetry signals. The proposed antenna, which is performed to be beam-tiled along the elevation direction, consists of 16 sub-array assemblies, 16 active circuit modules, a perpendicular feed network and a control/power unit. In order to precisely track an LEO satellite, the developed antenna is placed with its elevation axis along the projected trajectory of the satellite on the earth. The center of antenna aperture is facing to the maximum elevation angle in the LEO trajectory. The beam-tilted angles for tracking LEO satellite are obtained by calculating accurately satellite points. Satellite tracking measurements are carried out in the range of ±30° with the respect to the maximum elevation angle. The S/N ratio of 16.5 dB and the Eb/No of 13.3 dB at the maximum elevation angle are obtained from the measurements. The measured result agrees well with the pre-analyzed system margin.

Scanning white-light interferometry is an important measurement option for many surfaces. However, serious profile measurement errors can be present when measuring free-form surfaces being highly curved or tilted. When the object surface slope is not zero, the object and reference rays are no longer common path and optical aberrations impact the measurement. Aberrations mainly occur at the beam splitter in the interference objective and from misalignment in the optical system. Both effects distort the white-light interference signal when the surface slope is not zero. In this paper, we describe a modified version of white-light interferometry for eliminating these measurement errors and improving the accuracy of white-light interferometry. Moreover, we report systematic errors that are caused by optical aberrations when the object is not flat, and compare our proposed method with the conventional processing algorithm using the random ball test.

Mathematical modeling and vibration control of a tiltrotor aircraft composite wing-rotor system are investigated in this study. A wing-mounted rotor can be tilted from the vertical position to a horizontal one, and vice versa. Effect of vibration control of the wing-rotor system via piezoelectricity is studied as a function of tilt angle, ply angle of composite wing and rotor's spin speed. Composite wing is modeled as a thin-walled box beam having a circumferentially uniform stiffness configuration that produces elastic coupling between flap-lag and between extension-twist behavior. Numerical simulations are provided and pertinent conclusions are outlined.
An infrared range finder using a self-mixing laser diode (SM-LD), which has been proposed and developed by the Authors, can measure not only a range of a moving target but its velocity simultaneously. In this paper, described is that the precise mode-hop pulse train can be obtained by employing a new signal processing circuit even when the backscattered light returning into the SM-LD is much more weaker. As a result, the distance to a tilted square sheet made from aluminium or white paper, which is placed 10 cm through 60 cm from the SM-LD, is measured with accuracy of a few percent even when the tilting angle is less than 75 degrees or 85 degrees, respectively. And in this paper, described is the range-image recognition of a plane object under the condition of standstill. The output laser beam is scanned by scanning two plane mirrors-equipped with each stepping motor. And we succeeded in the acquisition of the range-image of a plane object in a few tens of seconds. Furthermore, described is a feasibility study about the range-image recognition of a slowly moving plane object.
The measured solar radiation incident on tilted surfaces by all directions has been widely used as important solar radiation data in installing solar collectors, hot water systems, and photovoltaic modules, and in designing solar buildings and houses. To maximize the incident beam radiation, the slope, which is the angle between the plane of the surface in question and the horizontal, and the solar azimuth angles are needed for these solar applied systems. To respond to above needs, a theoretical study with actual measurements on moving route of the sun is carried out. This study focuses on the development of an solar expert system and on the selection of slopes for solar absorber plates in Korea.
