A study on rotation angle Estimation of HMD for controlling the mobile robot tele-operation (이동로봇 원격제어를 위한 HMD의 방향각 측정 알고리즘에 관한 연구)

  • 본 논문은 네트워크를 통해서 이동로봇을 원격제어하기 위해 필요한 비전 시스템에서 HMD(Head Mounted Display)의 방향각 측정 알고리즘에 관한 연구이다. 우선 이 이동로봇 원격제어 시스템은 AP와 무선랜을 이용하여 독립 무선 네트워크를 구축하였고 이동로봇의 주변 환경을 레이저 센서와 스테레오 카메라를 이용하여 사용자에게 정보를 전송한다. 스테레오 카메라를 통해 전송된 영상 정보는 HMD를 통하여 볼 수 있다. 실시간으로 영상 카메라에 의해 측정 된 HMD의 회전 각도는 pen-tilt에 전송되어 HMD가 회전한 만큼 pen-tilt도 회전하여 이동로봇의 주변 환경 영상정보를 얻을 수 있는 알고리즘을 제안하였다.

Panorama Background Generation and Object Tracking using Pan-Tilt-Zoom Camera (Pan-Tilt-Zoom 카메라를 이용한 파노라마 배경 생성과 객체 추적)

  • This paper presents a panorama background generation and object tracking technique using a Pan-Tilt-Zoom camera. The proposed method estimates local motion vectors rapidly using phase correlation matching at the prespecified multiple local regions, and it makes minimized estimation error by vector quantization. We obtain the required image patches, by estimating the overlapped region using local motion vectors, we can then project the images to cylinder and realign the images to make the panoramic image. The object tracking is performed by extracting object's motion and by separating foreground from input image using background subtraction. The proposed PTZ-based object tracking method can efficiently generated a stable panorama background, which covers up to 360 degree FOV The proposed algorithm is designed for real-time implementation and it can be applied to many commercial applications such as object shape detection and face recognition in various surveillance video systems.

A Two-step Kalman/Complementary Filter for Estimation of Vertical Position Using an IMU-Barometer System (IMU-바로미터 기반의 수직변위 추정용 이단계 칼만/상보 필터)

  • Estimation of vertical position is critical in applications of sports science and fall detection and also controls of unmanned aerial vehicles and motor boats. Due to low accuracy of GPS(global positioning system) in the vertical direction, the integration of IMU(inertial measurement unit) with the GPS is not suitable for the vertical position estimation. This paper investigates an IMU-barometer integration for estimation of vertical position (as well as vertical velocity). In particular, a new two-step Kalman/complementary filter is proposed for accurate and efficient estimation using 6-axis IMU and barometer signals. The two-step filter is composed of (i) a Kalman filter that estimates vertical acceleration via tilt orientation of the sensor using the IMU signals and (ii) a complementary filter that estimates vertical position using the barometer signal and the vertical acceleration from the first step. The estimation performance was evaluated against a reference optical motion capture system. In the experimental results, the averaged estimation error of the proposed method was 19.7 cm while that of the raw barometer signal was 43.4 cm.

  • Although an accelerometer is a sensor that measures acceleration, it cannot be used by itself to measure the acceleration when the orientation of the sensor changes. This paper introduces a Kalman filter for the estimation of a sensor acceleration based on a six-axis inertial sensor (i.e., a three-axis accelerometer and three-axis gyroscope). The novelty of the proposed Kalman filter lies in the fact that its state vector includes not only the tilt angle variable but also the sensor acceleration. Thus, the filter can explicitly estimate the latter with a high accuracy. The accuracy of acceleration estimates were validated experimentally under three different dynamic conditions, using an optical motion capture system. It could be concluded that the performance of the proposed Kalman filter was comparable to that of the state-of-the-art estimation algorithm employed by the Xsens MTw. The proposed algorithm may be more suitable than inertial/magnetic sensor-based algorithms for various applications adopting six-axis inertial sensors.

  • In this study, the conceptual design of a tilt + stopped rotor type electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft was performed using design iteration. Based on Hyundai Motor's S-A1, the mission profile was defined using the concept of urban air mobility (UAM), and configuration design and aerodynamic analysis were performed using OpenVSP and XFLR5 software. After estimating the required power for the designed eVTOL, the required performance of the battery and the maximum take-off weight (MTOW) were calculated. . It was iteratively calculated using Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic Application, and a new electric motor weight estimation formula was derived. Also, the sensitivity analyses of each design variables of an eVTOL was performed using the automated program.

  • In this paper, we studied for the real-time azimuthal measurement of HMD(Head Mounted Display) using the feature points detection to control the tele-operated vision system on the mobile robot. To give the sense of presence to the tele-operator, we used a HMD to display the remote scene, measured the rotation angle of the HMD on a real time basis, and transmitted the measured rotation angles to the mobile robot controller to synchronize the pan-tilt angles of remote camera with the HMD. In this paper, we suggest an algorithm for the real-time estimation of the HMD rotation angles using feature points extraction from pc-camera image.

Active Object Tracking using Image Mosaic Background

  • In this paper, we propose a panorama-based object tracking scheme for wide-view surveillance systems that can detect and track moving objects with a pan-tilt camera. A dynamic mosaic of the background is progressively integrated in a single image using the camera motion information. For the camera motion estimation, we calculate affine motion parameters for each frame sequentially with respect to its previous frame. The camera motion is robustly estimated on the background by discriminating between background and foreground regions. The modified block-based motion estimation is used to separate the background region. Each moving object is segmented by image subtraction from the mosaic background. The proposed tracking system has demonstrated good performance for several test video sequences.

  • In this study, a new method to estimate the bridge deflection is developed by using Wireless Tilt Sensor. Most of evaluations of structural integrity, it is very important to measure the geometric profile, which is a major factor representing the global behavior of civil structure, especially bridges. In the past, Because of the lack of appropriate methods to measure the deflection curve of bridges on site, the measurement of deflection had been done restrictly within just a few discrete points along the bridge. Also the measurement point could be limited to locations installed with displacement transducers. So, in this study, the deflection of the structure was measured by wireless tilt sensor instead of LVDT(Linear Variable Differential Transformer). Angle change of tilt sensor shows structural behavior by the change of the resistor values which is presented to voltage. Moreover, the maximum deflection was calculated by changing the deflection angle which was calculated as V(measured voltage) ${\times}$F(factor) to deflection. The experimental tests were carried out to verify the developed deflection estimation techniques. Because the base of tilt measuring is the gravity, uniform measurement is possible independent of a measuring point. Also, measuring values were showed very high accuracy.

Novel Backprojection Method for Monocular Head Pose Estimation

  • Estimating a driver's head pose is an important task in driver-assistance systems because it can provide information about where a driver is looking, thereby giving useful cues about the status of the driver (i.e., paying proper attention, fatigued, etc.). This study proposes a system for estimating the head pose using monocular images, which includes a novel use of backprojection. The system can use a single image to estimate a driver's head pose at a particular time stamp, or an image sequence to support the analysis of a driver's status. Using our proposed system, we compared two previous pose estimation approaches. We introduced an approach for providing ground-truth reference data using a mannequin model. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system provides relatively accurate estimations of the yaw, tilt, and roll angle. The results also show that one of the pose estimation approaches (perspective-n-point, PnP) provided a consistently better estimate compared to the other (pose from orthography and scaling with iterations, POSIT) using our proposed system.

  • Recently, eVTOL, the next-generation of eco-friendly transportation, has been in the spotlight due to global warming along with traffic jams in large cities of many countries. This study benchmark the external features of Hyundai Motors S-A1, a compound eVTOL combined fixed and tilt rotors among many types of eVTOLs, to create the basic configuration using reverse design techniques. Basic configurations were created using CATIA and aerodynamic analyses were performed using the aircraft design and aerodynamic analysis programs, OpenVSP, XFLR5, and the aircraft wetted area, drag, and lift were calculated after selecting the airfoil, incidence angle, and dihedral and anhedral angles through trade study. Also, required powers were estimated for completing the given mission profile and components weight and the total weight were predicted using the estimation formula and data survey.
