  • In this paper, a strut-and-tie model approach has been proposed to directly calculate the amount of reinforcements in deep beams, and the force transfer mechanisms for this approach were investigated using linear finite element analysis. The proposed strut-and-tie model provides quite similar force transfer mechanisms to the results of linear finite element analysis for the 28 deep beams. The load-carrying capacities calculated from the proposed method are both accurate and conservative with little scatter or trends for the 214 deep beams. The deep beams have different concrete strengths including high-strength, various combinations of web reinforcements, and wide range of and a/d ratios. Good accuracy was also obtained using VecTor2, nonlinear finite element analysis tool based on the Modified Compression Field Theory. Since the proposed method provides a safe and reliable means for design of deep beams, this can serve to improve design provisions in future adjustments and development of design guidelines.

  • This research was prompted by the paucity of specific code provisions regarding the design of short columns for shear. The purpose of this paper was to investigate whether the use of the normal shear design procedure of various codes may or may not be applied to reliably calculate the shear strength of short columns. Provisions of the codes American ACI 318M-08, Canadian CSA A23.3-04, Japanese AIJ Guidelines, New Zealand NZS 3101, European EN 1998 (EC8) parts 1 and 3, combined with EN 1992-1-1 (EC2), and draft fib Model Code 2010, as well as a strut-and-tie model are applied on short columns tested under cyclic loading that failed in shear. Actual shear resistances are compared to predictions, and the resulting shortcomings of the codes are identified. EN1998-3 appears to be the only code among those considered that may be reliably applied to estimate the shear resistance of short columns. Further, the proposed strut-and tie model can be a useful tool for the detailed design and assessment of short columns.

  • Currently, selfie stick, a monopod take selfie photographs, got its popularity. Cradle used to connect selfie stick and smartphone usually uses electric force of spring to get smartphone fixed. But, using electric forces makes it hard to attach and detach smartphone from the cradle and gives possibility of smartphone falling down. CoQue suggests new solution of smartphone cradle by using cable tie (patent number US 8407863 B2) instead of electric force. It will give more easy and stable way of using selfie stick.

  • The designer has difficulty due to inadequacy of provisions in the domestic design code and lack of understanding for behavior of D-region. The reinforced concrete pi(${\pi}$)-shaped RC rahmen bridge consists of various failure mechanisms as the crushing or splitting from compression concrete, and shearing failure under the loading plate. However, predicting those failure mechanisms is very difficult. In this study, the pi(${\pi}$)-shaped RC rahmen bridge is analyzed and designed by using strut-tie model. Adequacy for the application of strut-tie model is verified by comparison with the way used in current design practice. As a result that designing the structures should be maked a comparison between strut-tie model and current conventional design method.

  • Although the strut-tie model approaches of current design codes are regarded as the valuable methods for designs of structural concretes with D-regions, the approaches have to be improved because of the uncertainties in terms of the concepts and provisions for designs of 3-dimensional structural concretes. To improve the uncertainties, a new strut-tie model approach is proposed in this study. In the proposed approach, the concepts of employing a 3-dimensional grid element allowing load transfers in all directions at a node to construct a strut-tie model, a numerical analysis approach to determine the effective strengths of concrete struts and nodal zones by reflecting the effects of reinforcing bars and 3-dimensional stress state, and maximum areas of struts and ties to examine their load carrying capacities are integrated into the strut-tie model approaches of current design codes.

  • The goal of this study is to conceptually orientate optimized layouts of outrigger belt trusses which are in widespread use today in the design of tall buildings by strut-and-tie truss models utilizing a topology optimization method. In this study unknown strut-and-tie models are realized by using a typical SIMP method of topology optimization methods. In tradition strut-and-tie model designs find the appropriate strut-and-tie trusses along force paths with respect to elastic stress distribution, and then engineers or designers determine the most proper truss models by experience and intuition. It is linked to a trial-and-error procedure based on heuristic strategies. The presented strut-and tie model design by using SIMP provides that belt truss models are automatically and robustly produced by optimal layout information of struts-and-ties conforming to force paths without any trial-and-error. Numerical applications are studied to verify that outrigger belt trusses for tall buildings are optimally chosen by the proposed method for both static and dynamic responses.

  • In this paper, a design method for a compact log-periodic half-bow-tie dipole array antenna for an operation in UWB band is studied. The proposed antenna is miniaturized by using half-bow-tie shaped dipole elements instead of strip-type dipole elements, which are commonly used in general log-periodic dipole array antenna, and by reducing the element spacing. The effects of the flare angle of the half-bow-tie elements and the element spacing on input reflection coefficient and realized gain characteristics of the proposed log-periodic antenna are analyzed. The optimized antenna is designed on FR4 substrate, and it operates in the frequency band of 3.05-13.96 GHz for a VSWR < 2, which assures the operation in the UWB band.

  • In this study, ultimate strengths of 51 continuous reinforced concrete deep beams were evaluated by the ACI 318M-08's strut-tie model approach implemented with the presented indeterminate strut-tie model and load distribution ratio of the companion paper. The ultimate strengths of the continuous deep beams were also estimated by the shear equations derived based on experimental results, conventional design codes based on experimental and theoretical shear strength models, and current strut-tie model design codes. The validity of the presented strut-tie model and load distribution ratio was examined through the comparison of the strength analysis results classified according to the primary design variables of shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, and concrete compressive strength. The present study results of ultimate strengths obtained using the indeterminate strut-tie model and load distribution ratio of the continuous deep beams agree fairly well with those obtained using other approaches. In addition, the present approach reflected the effect of the primary design variables on the ultimate strengths of the continuous deep beams consistently and accurately. Therefore, the present study will help structural designers to conduct rational and practical strut-tie model designs of continuous deep beams.

  • In this paper, U-Shaped slot Bow-Tie antenna for 5.15㎓∼5.35㎓ is designed, fabricated, and measured. The prototype consist of U-Shaped slot. To obtain suitable bandwidth, the form layer is inserted between ground plane and substrate. Important parameters in the design are U-slot length, width, position, air-gap height, and feed point position. From these parameters optimized, a U-shaped slot Bow-Tie antenna is fabricated and measured. The measured results of the antenna are obtained as follows results. The resonant frequency of the Fabrication U-shaped slot Bow-Tie antenna is 5.28㎓, bandwidth for approximately 7.76%(VSWR<1.2) and the gain is 4∼7dBi. The experimental far-field patterns are stable across the pass band. The 3dB bandwidth in Elevation and Azimuth are 73.63$^{\circ}$and 65.08$^{\circ}$, respectively.
