제주도 지하수의 수위변동에 관한 연구 (Study on the Fluctuations of Groundwater Levels in Cheju Island, Korea)

  • The groundwater levels at 11 sites and the vertical variations o( the water Quality at 1 site were measured to study the characteristic of the groundwater level fluctuation of Cheju Island. The results of the measurements for the groundwater levels were as follows; In the eastern part, inculding Kimnyong, Jongdal and Sungsan, a sinusoidal fluctuation of groundwater levels occurred in response to oceanic tides. The tidal effect on the groundwater level was reduced depending upon the distance from seashore. But time lag showed that the trend is reversed. However, in the Samyang, Kosan and Shinhyo areas show that the groundwater level was directly influenced by the amount of precipitation. Especially, Shinhyo area which southern part in Cheju was affected the most and show upper parabasal groundwater level. In Susan- I which eastern part in Cheju, well rovealed that water Quality changed with the period of a tide. Salinity at the lim, bellow the natural groundwater level, was approched to the brackish groundwater(1000ppm).

Nesting Site Preference and Hatching Success of the Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) in the Nakdong Estuary, Busan, Republic of Korea

  • This study was conducted to determine clutch size and habitat usage of Kentish plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus) breeding on Sinja-do lslet in the Nakdong Estuary from 22 April to 12 July in 1995 and from 21 April to 20 June in 1996. The Kentish plover preferred grasslands and damp sands to dry dunes as nesting sites. The difference in hatching success among these microhabitats was attributed to high tides, which washed away many nests on damp sands, and strong winds, which frequently shifted the sand to bury eggs on dry dunes. The main mortality factor in grasslands was predation by magpies Pica pica. Each clutch contained one to four eggs, with a mode of three eggs. Hatching success was highest in two-egg clutches and lowest in one- and four-egg clutches. The mean interval for egg laying was 1.8 days between the first and second eggs and 2.1 days between the second and third eggs. The average incubation period was about 24.2 days.

양어장 방류수를 이용한 해양소수력발전소 구축에 관한 연구 (Construction of Marine Small Hydro Power Plant using Discharge Water of Fish Farm)

  • This study is aimed to construct a marine small hydro power plant using discharge water of fish farm in Jeju Haengwon-ri. The difference of design methods between marine small hydro power plant and land small hydro power plant is to consider the tides. Moreover, ground condition should be examined because gushout sea water comes out from the ground at high tide in Jeju as the ground of Jeju beach consists of basalt stone. From the field test of the turbine generator after construction of the power plant, output power and efficiency of the turbine generator shows good conformance to the required conditions.

  • 페르시아(아라비아)만과 홍해를 포함하는 남위 10도이상의 아라비아해의 해양 역학을 이해하기 위한 첫단계로서 전해역을 1/6$^{\circ}$ (270$\times$246)의 해상도를 가진 조석모형에 의해 주분조의 조석체계를 산정하는 과업을 시작하였다. 이 아라비아해의 몰다이브공화국은 해면에 낮게 노출된 국가로서 지구 온난화에 따른 해면상승에 의해 민감한 지역이다. 아라비아해의 조석모형을 이용한 조석추정은 위성고도계자료(Topex$\times$Poseidon 및 ERS-1)로 부터 해면변위를 신뢰성있게 추출하기 위해 필수적인 과업으로 우선 M$_2$ 조석체계로서 부터 시작하여 주요 조석분조의 공간적인 분포를 산정하고저 한다.   • The Korean peninsula has a number of coastal sites where the rhythmic rising and lowering of water surface due to tides result in strong tidal current. The kinetic energy of these currents can be efficiently exploited by using tidal current turbines. The pilot tidal current power plant is to be constructed at the Uldolmok between Chindo and Haenam. Extensive coastal engineer ing research works have been carried out. This paper describes some observation results of field campaign, design of the supporting structure of a pilot plant of 1,000kW and a future tidal current power plant and so on.

낙동강 하구의 조석변화에 따른 Heterotrophic Activity의 계절적 변화와 염분의 영향 (Seasonal Variation of Heterotrophic Activity in the Estuary of Naktong River over Half Tidal Cycle and Salinity Effect)

  • Heterotrophic activity, total bacteria and salinity were determined seasonally in the estuary of Naktong River over half tidal cycle. Heterotrophic activity was determined by the uptake of [U- $^{14}$ C]glucose. Heterotrophic activity fluctuated with the tides and was decreased as salinity increased. Teh great activity occurred near low ebb tide at all seasons except summer. The main environmental factor affecting hetreotrophic activity was the salinity rather than water temperature in the estuary of Naktong River. In order to estimate the effect of salt, salt was added to estuarine water. Vmax for glucose of salt-added water was 17% and 77% of original estuarine water at station 1 and 2 respectively and slight increase was observed at station 3. Respiration rate and Kt+Sn for glucose of salt-added sample increased at all 3 stations. The increase of the Kt value implies the reduced affinity of bacterial population for glucose. The effects of salinity on the heterotrophic activity were more extensive in the upper region of estuary than at the mouth.

Survival and growth of the red tide organism Cochlodinium polykrikoides after the addition of yellow loess

  • At least 15% of the C polykrikoides cells that precipitated to the bottom layer either by the addition of loess or no addition survived for 1 week at all growth phases, rather than disappearing immediately after precipitating. However, no live cells were observed after 20 days, regardless of phase or loess addition. In the exponential phase, the number of C polykrikoides cells increased to >2886 cells/ml after loess was added. However, in the stationary phase, the number of cells did not increase until 18 days. In the exponential phase, those C polykrikoides that survived precipitation caused by scattering loess on cultures did not appear to have the ability to cause red tides again because of the short red tide periods in the field, long lag time after loess addition, and low survival rate after loess addition.

  • Tidal power can use conventional technology to extract energy from the tides. It is usually best deployed in areas where there i s a high tical range which includes Western and Southern coastal areas in Korea. However, to extract tical energy, a barrage across an estuary or a bay is to be constructed that is now very hard due to severe environmental impact on local estuary. The recent technology of application of tidal stream provides a new window to extract power minimizing the adverse environmental impact Tidal stream technology which directly exploits these currents is relatively new but is presently generating considerable interest Turbine rotors can be used to extract energy from the flows. Prototype devices currently on test in the UK include the 300kW SeaFlow turbine. In this paper, the recent technology and research on ocean tical stream power are addressed

  • Lower thermospheric winds are forced primarily by non-uniform solar heating, atmospheric tides and other waves coming from below, and energy and momentum forcing associated with high-latitude magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, particularly ion drag and Joule heating. To understand the physical processes that control the thermospheric dynamics, we quantify the momentum forces that are mainly responsible for maintaining the high-latitude lower thermospheric wind system and examine the resulting momentum balance with the aid of the Thermosphere-Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (NCAR-TIEGCM) developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
