Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency(KHOA) carried out a research project named 'Marine Fisheries Infrastructure Construction and Technology Training for the Philippines' as part of the 1st Official Development Assistance(ODA) from 2015 to 2018. It is preparing for the 2nd ODA project which will begin in 2020. Besides, recently, the Philippines is paying attention to marine territory management and response capability due to problems such as the sea-level rise and coastal erosion caused by climate change. Therefore, before 2nd ODA to the Philippines, this study analyzed the vertical ocean model on the vertical datum in Korea and suggests the direction of development of the vertical ocean modeling system for the vertical datum in the Philippines using the observed data from the permanent tide station which was built by the Philippines ODA research project over the last four years. Moreover, as a pilot study, the Sulu Sea in the Philippines was selected and analyzed by harmonic analysis method. At each tide station, constants for correction had been computed. And the grid-based tidal model was constructed based on this study. As a result of the study, similar tidal characteristic were observed when the prediction and the measured tide were compared by applying the constants for correction between two station in the sea area with similar tidal level. These results could be used as basic data for the 2nd ODA to the Philippines, and contributed to construct and maintain a close cooperation and friendship between Korea and the Philippines.

The topographic influences for the hydraulic characteristics in the estuary were studied by the hydraulic model test. The upstream boundary is set up at the Kumkang estuary dike and the downstream boundary at the Kunsan outer port. The geometrical model scales in horizontal and vertical are 1/300 and 1/100 respectively so that the distorted ratio is 3. If there is no or little river flow through the gate, the highest water levels are varied with $\pm$ 5cm compared with those before the project. If there is a flood flow through the gate, the highest water levels in front of the estuary dike are reduced 5~2Ocm depending on the frequency of flood compared with those before the project. This means that there is no important risk of excessive water level rise after the dredging.

The height datum of Korea is currently separated into land and sea, which makes it difficult to acquire homogeneous and accurate height information throughout the whole nation. In this study, we therefore tried to suggest the more effective way to transform the height information were constructed separately according to each height datum on land and sea to those on the unique height datum using precise geoid models and tidal observations in Korea. For this, Anmyeon island was selected as a study area to develop the precise geoid models based on the height datums land (IMSL) and sea (LMSL), respectively. In order to develop two hybrid geoid models based on each height datum of land an sea, we firstly develop a precise gravimetric geoid model using the remove and restore (R-R) technique with all available gravity observations. The gravimetric geoid model were then fitted to the geometric geoidal heights, each of which is represented as height datum of land or sea respectively, obtained from GPS/Leveling results on 15 TBMs in the study area. Finally, we determined the differences between the two hybrid geoid models to apply the height transformation between IMSL and LMSL. The co-tidal chart model of TideBed system developed by Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA) which was re-gridded to have the same grid size and coverage as the geoid model, in order that this can be used for the height datum transformation from LMSL to local AHHW and/or from LMSL to local DL. The accuracy of height datum transformation based on the strategy suggested in this study was approximately ${\pm}3cm$. It is expected that the results of this study can help minimize not only the confusions on the use of geo-spatial information due to the disagreement caused by different height datum, land and sea, in Korea, but also the economic and time losses in the execution of coastal development and disaster prevention projects in the future.
Considerable damages of the cultivated Porphyra by Porphyra diseases were reported from the Porphyra culture bed along the coast of Yongwon-ri, Changwon, Kyungnam during the years of 1969 and 1970. The present study deals with the effects of fertilizer plant effluents on the Porphyra diseases, and the results are summarized as follows : 1. By the result of current observation, the polluted water of Haeng-am Bay which has an inflow of pollutants from the fertilizer plant was affecting the bed with tides. The results of pollution studies in Chinhae Bay and adjacent waters conducted by Won and Park(1971) also show that Chinhae Bay and adjacent waters are contaminated with the plant effluents. It seems that the effect increases due to the wind drift current when north-westerly or westerly winds prevail. Accordingly, effects of the Porphyra diseases in the culture bed seem to originate from the pollutants, since there are more damages when the north-westerly or westerly winds prevail, and also spring tide develops. 2. As compared to the photosynthetic activity of the Porphyra suborbiculata in uncontaminated seawater, it decreases up to $4\%$ in 200pmm, $20\%$ in 300ppm and $43\%$ in 1,000ppm of contaminated seawater which contains dilluted pollutants from the fertilizer plant. The results of the measurements using the water collected in the polluted area of Chinhae Bay and adjacent waters revealed that the photosynthesis was depressed about 21 to $34\%$ near the plant, and in the area of the Porphyra beds, $15\%$ in the portion where tide is weak and $5\%$ where the tide is strong, in comparison with the area of unpolluted water. 3. Although the present results do not indicate the exact level of harmful pollutants, it is evident that the pollutants of the plant effluents interfere photosynthetic activity of the Porphyra, even in the water containing pollutants as low as 200 ppm.
Tidal variations of various chemical constituents in the laver bed sea waters in Wan Do Gun were determined over one spring tidal cycle from Oct. 1968 to Feb. 1969. Total ranges and means of the contents at Pyung-il Do and Wan Do are as follows. Although the average monthly variations of each content at Pyung-il Do were similar to those at Wan Do, most of the contents at Pyung-il Do were at a slightly higher level than at Wan Do. The values of silicate-silicon, phosphate- phosphorus and soluble iron, however, showed high levels at Wan Do. Chlorinity, magnesium, calcium, dissolved oxygen, silicate-silicon and phosphate-phosphorus contents increased from Oct. 1968 to Feb. 1969, though the content of soluble iron decreased before December and slightly increased in January and February. The average monthly variations of ammonia-nitrogen and nitrate-nitrogen contents were irregular. The nitrite-nitrogen content appeared in trace amounts in the months with a comparatively high water temperature, i.e., October and November, but in midwinter it was undetected. The ranges of the tidal variations of the contents of each chemical constituent were not significantly wide, though the contents varied excessively by the hour, and this may show the irregularity of the water quality in Wan Do Gun coastal area. As a rule, no regular tidal variation of the chlorinity was observed except slightly decreased value at ebb tide at Wan Do. In general, although the pattern of the variations of calcium and magnesium contents were similar to that of the chlorinity, no definite relationships between these constituents and chlorinity were observed. Tidal variations of the dissolved oxygen content, nutrient salts and soluble iron were irregular.
Diel changes in the feeding habits of Rudarius ercodes were investigated in an eelgrass bed of Jindong Bay, Korea. The main food components for R. ercodes (1.6~ 4.3 cm SL) were gammarid amphipods, eelgrass, polychaetes and urochordates. Most dietary items were inhabitants of an eelgrass bed. Diel variations in diet and feeding activity occurred. The diet of R. ercodes underwent changes from eelgrass and gammarid amphipods (omnivore) at day to mainly gammarid amphipods, polychaetes, and urochordates (carnivore) at night. Rudarius ercodes probably took detached eelgrass leaves and grazed live eelgrass during day, whereas feeding on gammarid amphipods, polychaetes, urochordates, and bivalves were facilitated by nocturnal movement and activity of these prey during night. The feeding activity of R. ercodes was also correlated with periods of high tides.

This study analyzed the possibility of inland navigation in the Han river mouth, from Singok weir to the junction of Gongleung Stream. As a result of analysis using recent survey data and water level data, it was found that the number of days that a 250 - 400 ton class vessel can operate in the Han river estuary is less than 119 days per year. In the case of a 400 - 1,500 ton class vessel, it was found that only about 47 days per year can be operated. In this region, even in the absence of large-scale floods, the river bed continues to change significantly due to strong tides, indicating that there are limitations in securing a stable waterway. Therefore, for stable inland navigation, it is judged that continuous investigation and analysis of the possibility and stability of waterways are necessary.

With the recent development of bathemetry technology, the hydrographic surveying method has been changed from single beam depth device use to multi beam acoustic sounding technology. Also, various studies have been reported to obtain high accuracy and precision in the process of river bed topographic data. Especially south korea is geographically on three sides of the sea and the river topography is very developed. To build information about the underwater, and riverbed status, the public investigations has been continuously progressed. In this study, We investigasted the riverbed topography near Baeckma river leisure park. for this purpose, In this study, as the first preliminary survey, location of navigational dangerous objects and reefs and the dangerous areas are identified. Also, ground control points is selected for the optimal GPS surveying. Secondary, through test surveying the Gain, TVG, and pulse length are determined. In addition, the investigation of dangerous objects for navigation is also conducted. As the last step, the error analysis are conducted for the acquired data, and this process involves the removal and adjustments of errors. This section includes the analysis of tide level and navigational contributions, and finally generates a submarine topographic map.
The major objective of this study was to develop further understanding of 3D nearshore hydrodynamics under a variety of wave and tidal forcing conditions. The main tool used was a comprehensive 3D numerical model - combining the flow module of Delft3D with the WAVE solver of XBeach - of nearshore hydro- and morphodynamics that can simulate flow, sediment transport, and morphological evolution. Surf-swash zone hydrodynamics were modeled using the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, combined with various turbulence models (${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$, ${\kappa}-L$, ATM and H-LES). Sediment transport and resulting foreshore profile changes were approximated using different sediment transport relations that consider both bed- and suspended-load transport of non-cohesive sediments. The numerical set-up was tested against field data, with good agreement found. Different numerical experiments under a range of bed characteristics and incident wave and tidal conditions were run to test the model's capability to reproduce 3D flow, wave propagation, sediment transport and morphodynamics in the nearshore at the field scale. The results were interpreted according to existing understanding of surf and swash zone processes. Our numerical experiments confirm that the angle between the crest line of the approaching wave and the shoreline defines the direction and strength of the longshore current, while the longshore current velocity varies across the nearshore zone. The model simulates the undertow, hydraulic cell and rip-current patterns generated by radiation stresses and longshore variability in wave heights. Numerical results show that a non-uniform seabed is crucial for generation of rip currents in the nearshore (when bed slope is uniform, rips are not generated). Increasing the wave height increases the peaks of eddy viscosity and TKE (turbulent kinetic energy), while increasing the tidal amplitude reduces these peaks. Wave and tide interaction has most striking effects on the foreshore profile with the formation of the intertidal bar. High values of eddy viscosity, TKE and wave set-up are spread offshore for coarser grain sizes. Beach profile steepness modifies the nearshore circulation pattern, significantly enhancing the vertical component of the flow. The local recirculation within the longshore current in the inshore region causes a transient offshore shift and strengthening of the longshore current. Overall, the analysis shows that, with reasonable hypotheses, it is possible to simulate the nearshore hydrodynamics subjected to oceanic forcing, consistent with existing understanding of this area. Part II of this work presents 3D nearshore morphodynamics induced by the tides and waves.

Tidal asymmetry would occur owing to shallow water tides at the Western Coast of macro tidal area. Especially, as ebb dominance of Mokpo coastal zone is known as the most prominent in Korea, it had been studied by domestic researchers. The cause of ebb dominance in Mokpo area is considered due to extensive inter-tidal zone in Muan Bay, and this has been studied based on amplification ratio, relative phase and skewness of tide/tidal flow curves in order to analyze qualitative tidal asymmetry. Furthermore, it was possible to figure out tidal characteristics with the difference of tidal amplitude and phase with Mokpo Harbor by observing the tide for 15 days in Muan Bay, which showed 40 minutes shorter ebbing time than at Mokpo Harbor. In addition, tidal flow prediction data in Mokpo North Harbor and Mokpo-Gu were analyzed. Meanwhile, the basis regarding qualitative interpretation of bed sediment and suspended sediment was provided by examining the qualitative changes in tidal asymmetry for spring-neap tidal cycle through the PCA/SWA indices. In addition, by examining long-term changes of ebb dominance in Mokpo Port, tidal characteristics of the past, present and future in this area, which is related to tidal asymmetry, is also provided.
