The Kyunggi Bay in mid-west of Korea is a relatively large estuarine system that connects the Han River system with Yellow Sea. Due to macro-tidal range of more than 8 m, the urban estuary shows deep tidal channels and wide tidal flats. Since last 30 years, the coastal development is undergoing, yielding noticeable change in environment. Particularly the tidal flat dynamics are generally accepted as being related with tidal residual flows in this area (Kim et al., 2009). We have estimated the annual variation and vertical structure of residual currents with one-year long observed flows in two major tidal channels of Kyunggi Bay. The moving average method and tidal current harmonic analysis yield nearly the same results on residual flow. The residual flow in Jangbong channel ranges from 20 cm/s in summer to 30 cm/s in winter. It is noticeable that the residual flow in Jangbong channel is flood dominant throughout the year, while the flow in Seokmo channel is ebb-dominant residual flow with current speed range of 20-40 cm/s. Due to the baroclinic response of relatively shallow estuary, significant reduction of energy in bottom layers have been observed, indicating the importance of residual circulation to the tidal flat behavior.

The distribution of tidal current and tidal induced residual current, topographical eddies and tidal residual circulation in the waters surrounding the Geumo Island-An Island channel were identified through numerical model experiments and vorticity balance analysis. Tidal current flows southwest at flood and northeast at ebb along the channel. The maximum flow velocity was about 100-150 cm/s in neap and spring tide. During the flood current in the neap tide, clockwise small eddies were formed in the waters west of Sobu Island and southwest of Daebu Island, and a more grown eddy was formed in the southern waters of Geumo Island in the spring tide. A small eddy that existed in the western waters of Chosam Island during the ebb in neap tide appeared to be a more grown topographical eddy in the northeastern waters of Chosam Island in spring tide. Tidal ellipses were generally reciprocating and were almost straight in the channel. These topographical eddies are made of vorticity caused by coastal friction when tidal flow passes through the channel. They gradually grow in size as they are transported and accumulated at the end of the channel. When the current becomes stronger, the topographic eddies move, settle, spread to the outer sea and grow as a counterclockwise or clockwise tidal residual circulation depending on the surrounding terrain. In the waters surrounding the channel, there were counterclockwise small tidal residual circulations in the central part of the channel, clockwise from the northeast end of the channel to northwest inner bay of An Island, and clockwise and counterclockwise between Daebu Island and An Island. The circulation flow rate was up to 20-30 cm/s. In the future, it is necessary to conduct an experimental study to understand the growth process of the tidal residual circulation in more detail due to the convergence and divergence of seawater around the channel.

Flow prediction was carried out through observational survey and three dimensional multi-layered numerical diagnostic model experiment to clarify the time and spatial structure of tidal current and residual flow dominant in the sea exchange and material circulation of the waters around Geumo Islands in the southern waters of Korea. The horizontal variation of tidal current is so large that it causes asymmetric tidal mixing due to horizontal eddies and the topographical effect creating convergence and dispersion of flow direction and velocity. Due to strong tidal currents flowing northwest-southeast, counterclockwise and clockwise eddies are formed on the left and right sides of the south of Sori Island. These topographical eddies are created by horizontal turbulence and bottom friction causing nonlinear effects. Baroclinic density flows are less than 5 cm/s at coastal area in summer and the entire sea area in winter. The wind driven currents assuming summer and winter seasonal winds are also less than 5 cm/s and the current flow rate is high in winter. Density current in summer and wind driven current in winter have a relatively greater effect on the net residual flows (tidal residual current + density current + density driven current) around Geumo Islands Sea area.

In order to understand the currents around Hampyung Bay and Haeje Peninsula, 2D numerical simulations for tidal currents and tide-induced residual currents were carried out. Dominant semidiurnal tidal currents have reversing form and flow NNE-SSW from northern Haeje Peninsula to Songi Island, E-S at northern Haeje Peninsula and NNW-SSE in Hampyung Bay. In flood, a part of currents from Imja Island~Nakwhol Island flow along the main stream flowing northeast at offshore region and the rest flow into Hampyung Bay flowing east along the northern coast of Haeje Peninsula. In ebb, currents from Hampyung Bay flow west along the northern coast of Haeje Peninsula and run together with the main stream flowing southeast at offshore region. The currents create an anticyclonic circulation in flood and a cyclonic circulation in ebb around Haeje Peninsula including Hampyung Bay. Tidal currents are accumulated on Doripo which located at the entrance of Hampyung Bay and show high current velocities. Tidal currents and tide induced residual currents are weak at the inside of Hampyung Bay which has narrow entrance, shallow water depth and wide intertidal zone. An anticyclonic eddy is formed around Gaksi Island as a result of tide induced residual currents. In northern coast of Haeje Peninsula, slow constant currents flow east. It is expected that a gradual change of sediment and an increase of flushing time for suspended materials are carried by tidal currents occurring in Hampyung Bay.

The characteristics of tidal circulation with Hyungsan River discharges in Youngil Bay by the numerical experiments is elucidated. For the simulation of tidal residual currents related to inflow by the river discharges in Youngil Bay located in the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula, the two-dimensional numerical experiment is peformed. The tidal elevation boundary conditions of the 4 main tidal harmonic constituents (M₂, S₂, K₁ and O₁) on the open boundary and river discharges at the river boundary are considered. The computed results obtained from numerical experiment showed good agreements with the field observation ones. The residual currents generally flow toward the inner bay through the western (Dalman-Gap) and central areas of the bay, and then the currents go toward the outer bay along the eastern shore (Changgi-Gap) of the bay with anti-clockwise circulation. Especially, in the numerical experiment without Hyungsan River discharges, these flow patterns are disappeared. Based on the results, it showed that the Hyungsan River discharges play the dominant role in the patterns of tidal residual currents. This flow pattern of tidal residual currents are important mechanism of water quality, material transport in Youngil Bay.

The cause of abnormal tidal residuals was examined by analyzing sea levels, sea surface atmospheric pressures, winds at ten tide stations, and current, measured at the coast of the Yellow Sea from the night of November $24^{th}$ to the morning of the $25^{th}$ in 2013, along with weather chart. Additionally, the cross-correlations among the measured data were also examined. The 'abnormal tidal residuals' mentioned in this study refer to differences between maximum and minium tidal residuals. The largest abnormal tidal residual was identified to be a difference of 176 cm occurring over 4 hours and 1 minute at YeongJongDo (YJD) with a maximum tidal residual of 111 cm and minimum of -65 cm. The smallest abnormal tidal residual was 68 cm at MoSeulPo (MSP) during 8 hours 52 minutes. The cause of these abnormal tidal residuals was not a meteo-tsunami generated by an atmospheric pressure jump but wind generated by the pressure patterns. The flow speed due to these abnormal tidal residuals as measured at ten tide stations was not negligible, representing 16 ~ 41 % of the annual average ebb current speed. From the cross correlation among the tidal residuals, winds, and tidal residual currents, we learned the northern flow, due to southerly winds, raised the sea level at Incheon when a low pressure center located on the left side of the Korean Peninsula. After passing the Korean Peninsula, a southern flow due to northerly winds decreased the sea level.
Tidal circulation in a closed bay using a variation of bottom roughness was investigated through the numerical experiments based on a finite difference multi-level model. Various distributions of bottom roughness in the bay were implemented to determine their effects. It hadbeen determined that residual currents can be generated from the differences of the bottom roughness between streaming and reverse flow directions. The magnitude of residual currents and volume flow rate increase when the relative ratio of bottom roughness between streaming and reverse flow directions increase. Circulation in the closed bay is also improved by the employment of the change of bottom roughness.
Tidal currents and tidal residual currents in Chinhae Bay are investigated by the field observations and hydraulic experiments during the spring tide and neap tide. The horizontal and vertical scales of the model are l/2,000 and 1/159, respectively. The hydraulic model results roughly coincide with the field data. Maximum tidal currents during the spring tide and neap tide in the central channel of Chinhae Bay are strong as about 90 and 30cm/s respectively, and strong tidal residual currents take place. Maximum tidal currents during the spring tide and neap tide in the western and northern part of the bay are weak as below 30 and 10cm/s respectively, and also tidal residual currents are weak. Tidal residual currents rotating clockwise occur in the central part of the bay. Northward tidal residual currents in the northern part of Kajo-do are predominant, whereas southward ones in the southern part of Kajo-do are remarkable. The surface currents in the bay depend strongly on the wind and river flow, and it seems to be remarkable during the neap tide.
A study of estuarine flows during a neap tide was performed using 13-hour roving acoustic Doppler current profiles (ADCP) and conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiles in the Altamaha River estuary, Georgia, U.S.A. The least-squared harmonic analysis method was used to fit the tidal ($M_2$) component and separate the flow into two components: the tidal and residual ($M_2$-removed) flows. We applied this method to depth-averaged data. Results show that the $M_2$ component demonstrates over 95% of the variability of observation data. As the flow was dominated by the $M_2$ tidal component in a narrow channel, the tidal ellipse distribution was essentially a back-and-forth motion. The amplitude of $M_2$ velocity component increased slightly from the river mouth (0.45 m/sec) to land (0.6 m/sec) and the phase showed fairly constant values in the center of the channel and rapidly decreasing values near the northern and southern shoaling areas. The residual flow and transport calculated from depth-averaged flow shows temporal variability over the tidal time scale. Strong landward flows appeared during slack waters which may be attributed to increased baroclinic forcing when turbulent mixing decreases.
Water pollution in a semi-enclosed sea area such as a bay due to stagnancy of water has been a serious water environmental problem. Recently, some kinds of new methods to activate the tidal exchange between an inner bay and an outer sea area by control of a tidal residual current have been proposed. However, these methods have several problems, that is, I). deterioration in a natural view due to building of huge structures, II). increase of risk of navigation in case of a submerged structure, III). limition of sea area where a tidal current can be controlled and IV). difficulty in removing those structures in case of occurrence of an unexpected impact on water environment. In this paper, a new method is proposed, which can solve all the above problems, to purify water quality in a semi-enclosed bay by creation and control of a pattern of a tidal residual current. The tidal residual current is controlled by unsymmetric structures, which change the properties of resistance according to the direction of flow, arranged on the sea bottom. In this study, several numerical and hydraulic experiments of tidal current and particle-tracking for various arrangements of bottom roughness in a semi-enclosed model bay were carried out. As a result of experiments, it becomes clear that it is possible to generate a new tidal residual current and to activate a tidal exchange by only operation of bottom roughness arrangement.
