The Kyunggi Bay in mid-west of Korea is a relatively large estuarine system that connects the Han River system with Yellow Sea. Due to macro-tidal range of more than 8 m, the urban estuary shows deep tidal channels and wide tidal flats. Since last 30 years, the coastal development is undergoing, yielding noticeable change in environment. Particularly the tidal flat dynamics are generally accepted as being related with tidal residual flows in this area (Kim et al., 2009). We have estimated the annual variation and vertical structure of residual currents with one-year long observed flows in two major tidal channels of Kyunggi Bay. The moving average method and tidal current harmonic analysis yield nearly the same results on residual flow. The residual flow in Jangbong channel ranges from 20 cm/s in summer to 30 cm/s in winter. It is noticeable that the residual flow in Jangbong channel is flood dominant throughout the year, while the flow in Seokmo channel is ebb-dominant residual flow with current speed range of 20-40 cm/s. Due to the baroclinic response of relatively shallow estuary, significant reduction of energy in bottom layers have been observed, indicating the importance of residual circulation to the tidal flat behavior.

Numerical model introduced in this study combines wave refraction-diffraction, breaking, bottom friction, lateral mixing, and critical shear stress and three sub-models for simulating waves, currents, and bottom change were briefly discussed. Simulations of beach processes and harbor sedimentation were also described at the coast neighboring Bangpo Harbor, Anmyundo, Chungnam, where the area has suffered from accumulation of drifting sand in a small fishing harbor with a wide tidal range. We also made model test for the case of a narrow tidal range at Nakdong river's estuary area to understand the effect of water level variation on the littoral drift. Simulations are conducted in terms of incident wave direction and tidal level. Characteristics of wave transformation, nearshore current, sediment transport, and bottom change are shown and analyzed. We found from the simulation that the tidal level impact to the sediment transport is very important and we should apply the numerical model with different water level to analyze sediment transport mechanism correctly. Although the model study gave reasonable description of beach processes and harbor sedimentation mechanism, it is necessary to collect lots of field observation data, including waves, tides and bottom materials, etc. for better prediction.
Seasonal variations of chemical constituents of estuarine water at a definite station of the tidal flat in Guang Yang inlet have been determined for two days a month. The range and mean of the annual variations are as follows:Tidal variations through a year are as follows:1. Although the tidal value of pH is almost constant during one tidal cycle, it raises abruptly 0.1-0.2 intervals of pH value during the first period of flood.2. The lower values of chlorinity, magnesium and calcium contents have been determined the nearer the slack after ebb, and slightly higher during the first period of flood tide than the last of ebb. The tidal change of calcium contents is more remarkable than of magnesium.3. The higher per cent saturation values of dissolved oxygen, sometimes higher than 100 per cent, re determined the nearer the slack after ebb.4. The total nitrogen contents, relatively poor, varies accidentally during one tidal cycle, whereas phosphate-P and silicate-Si are rich at the slack after ebb and increase proportionally to the mixing percentage of fresh water. The average values, 52.2 and 18.5 of Si/P and N/P are greater than of the normal.5. The acid soluble iron contents, lower in winter than in summer, is also varies accidentally during one tidal cycle and the magnitude of the variation is large.6. The chemical composition considered from the value of Ca/Cl or Mg/Cl of estuarine water varies according to the chlorinity even at the high chlorinity of 18-19%.
The Korean peninsula has a number of coastal sites where the rhythmic rising and lowering of water surface due to tides results in strong tidal current. The kinetic energy of these currents can be efficiently exploited by use of tidal current turbines. The pilot tidal current power plant is to be constructed at the Uldolmok narrow channel between J info and Haenam, Our ins next Year, and extensive coastal engineer ing research works have been carried out. This paper describes and analyzes some observation results of field test about the efficiency of Helical turbine for tidal current power plant. The efficiency of turbine, which is diameter 2.2m and height 2.5m, is evaluated meximum RPM, torque, and current velocity. The tested turbines had the maximum efficiencies of the bounds of 25 to 35% in the current velocity range between 1.4 and 2.6 m/s. This result shows that the pilot tidal current power plant needs three helical turbines with diameter 3.0m and height 3.6m to produce electric power 500kW.
This paper investigates preliminarily spatial distribution soil organic matter (SOM), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and its environmental influence in wetland soil of different vegetation landscape in the Yellow River Mouth. The result shows the SOM and total nitrogen (TN), efficient N, efficient P in top layer soils of different vegetation district have significantly different content, The SOM is shown as Calamagrostis epigeios wetlands > Phragmites cmmunis wetlands > Tamarix chinensi wetlands above tidal > Suaeda salsa wetlands in high tidal > Tamarix chinensi wetlands in high tidal > tidal flats, the arrange of the TN and efficient N content is the same except that the content in Suaeda salsa wetlands in high tidal is heavier than Tamarix chinensi wetlands in high tidal. In different vegetation landscape wetland types the vertical change of soil nutrients are obvious except for p, gradually decrease from the upper to the lower. This case reflects the function of the vegetation on the wetland development of soil and proves the wetland soil has the characteristic of new born and bad degree of development. SOM, TN, efficient N and efficient P content in wetland soils have significantly positive correlation, but TP have no correlation with them but efficient p. The contents of TN in wetland soils range from 58~1480 mg/kg, total average content 408 mg/kg, average content of above 30 cm is 625 mg/kg. The range of TP content in the soil is 372~1042 mg/kg, total average is 569 mg/kg, average content of above 20 cm is 611 mg/kg. According the P it occurs mainly as calcium phosphates, and the validity is lower, therefore, N and P in the new born wetlands cannot produce serious impact on the environments at present.
A wastewater treatment plant located in coastal areas should be built considering the discharge of rainwater and treated water into the sea. The current Hagik Wastewater Treatment Plant in Incheon City was designed in the surface discharge method, which refers to discharging treated water directly into the sea. This method may cause hydrodynamic issues in a wastewater treatment plant because seawater enters an outfall riser when the level of discharged water is lower than the tidal level on a shore with high tidal range. In this study, a method for installing a weir in the discharge manhole was proposed in order to prevent seawater from entering the outfall riser of a wastewater treatment plant. Its feasibility was reviewed by calculating the hydrodynamic that had occurred due to the installation of the weir. As a result, seawater did not enter in the discharge manhole. Thus, even if the coast of Incheon City reaches the highest tidal level, treated water will be able to be properly discharged.

Estuarine dams are a recent and global phenomenon. While estuarine dams can provide the benefit of improved freshwater resources, they can also alter estuarine processes. Due to the wide range of estuarine types and estuarine dam configurations, the effect of estuarine dams on estuaries is not well understood in general. To develop a systematic understanding of the effect of estuarine dam location and freshwater discharge interval on a range of estuarine types (strongly stratified, partially mixed, periodically stratified, and well-mixed), this study used a coupled hydrodynamic-sediment dynamic numerical model (COAWST) and compared flow, sediment transport, and morphological conditions in the pre- and post-dam estuaries. For each estuarine type, scenarios with dam locations at 20, 55 and 90 km from the mouth and discharge intervals of a discharge every 0.5, 3, and 7 days were investigated. The results were analyzed in terms of change in tide, river discharge, estuarine classification, and sediment flux mechanism. The estuarine dam location primarily affected the tide-dominated estuaries, and the resonance length was an important length scale affecting the tidal currents and Stokes return flow. When the location was less than the resonance length, the tidal currents and Stokes return flow were most reduced due to the loss of tidal prism, the dead-end channel, and the shift from mixed to standing tides. The discharge interval primarily affected the river-dominated estuaries, and the tidal cycle period was an important time scale. When the interval was greater than the tidal cycle period, notable seaward discharge pulses and freshwater fronts occurred. Dams located near the mouth with large discharge interval differed the most from their pre-dam condition based on the estuarine classification. Greater discharge intervals, associated with large discharge magnitudes, resulted in scour and seaward sediment flux in the river-dominated estuaries, and the dam located near the resonance length resulted in the greatest landward tidal pumping sediment flux and deposition in the tide-dominated estuaries.

Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become more important nationally. Having very strong current on the west coast with up to 10 m tidal range, there are many suitable site for the application of TCP (Tidal Current Power) in Korea. On the south west regions between many islands that create strong current in the narrow channels. The rotor is one of the essential components which can convert tidal current energy into rotational energy to generate electricity. The design optimization of rotor is very important to maximize the power production. The performance of rotor can be determined by various parameters including number of blades, shape, sectional size, diameters and etc. This paper introduces the multi-layer vertical axis tidal current power system which can be applied to offshore jetties and piers effectively. Various cases of VAT turbine were designed. Specifically, the number of blades and turbine shape are changed in several cases. Also, performance analysis was carried out by CFD.

Tidal turbine, which is relatively similar to wind turbine in term of operational principle, has become a potential solution for the sustainable development of global energy. This paper introduces author's work on tidal turbine which aims to improve the power efficiency by the adaption of counter-rotating concept. The turbine system is modelled and analyzed using computational simulation commercial code. Compared with other works, the counter-rotating tidal turbine presented here is expected to operate stably with high performance throughout a wide range of tip-speed-ratio. Moreover, the equability of individual performance of each rotor is an advantage.
The monthly distribution of zooplankton communities in Han River estuary was investigated at two stations from July 1998 to June 1999. Monthly mean abundance of total zooplankton varied remarkably, with the range from 20 $indiv.{\cdot}m^{-3}$ to 19,600 $indiv.{\cdot}m^{-3}$. During the study period, dominant species of zooplankton community were dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans, copepods Paracalanus indicus, Paracaanus crassirostris, Acartia hongi, Acartia ohtsukai, and meroplanton cirriped larvae. According to tidal states, relative high abundance occurred at high tide without regard to season. The temporal distribution of abundance implied that the reduced salinity probably limited the zooplankton populations and the fluctuations of salinity were an important factor in the variation of abundance. However, the results of salinity tolerance test shows that the variations in salinity do not directly influence the decrease of abundance. This study shows that the relatively high abundance of zooplankton near high tide seems to be related with the expansion of abundant zooplankton inhabiting Incheon coastal waters through tidal currents.
