  • Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become the international issue. Not like other renewable energy sources, TCP is the high reliable and predictable and continuous energy source as the current pattern and speed can be predicted throughout the year. Having very strong tidal current speeds, there are many suitable site for the application of TCP (Tidal Current Power) on the west and south coastal region in Korea. The maximum current speed in the south is recorded up to 6.5m/s. Due to the high tidal current speed on the west coast of Korea, numerous tidal current projects are being planned. To extract a significant quantity of power, a tidal current farm with number of devices is required in the ocean. However, it is important to estimate the potential quantity of energy in the area. Also the realistic quantity that can be extracted is to be investigated. Based on the estimated energy production considering the number of devices and the interactional effects, system type, the water depth and etc., the cost of the development and the benefit from SMP can be estimated. The feasibility study for the 200MW tidal in Incheon, Korea has been performed recently. Based on the actual feasibility study, the procedure and the key points for the application of tidal current power farm are introduced in the paper.

  • The Korean peninsula has a number of coastal sites where the rhythmic rising and lowering of water surface due to tides result in strong tidal current. The kinetic energy of these currents can be efficiently exploited by using tidal current turbines. The pilot tidal current power plant is to be constructed at the Uldolmok between Chindo and Haenam. Extensive coastal engineer ing research works have been carried out. This paper describes some observation results of field campaign, design of the supporting structure of a pilot plant of 1,000kW and a future tidal current power plant and so on.

  • With the worldwide trend of controlling the utilization fossil fuels inducing global climate change, many efforts will have to be made on securing stable supply of the energy due to UNFCCC. Tidal currents are a concentrated form of gravitational energy. Tidal current resource is significant, but limited locations. Technical and economic feasibility demonstration is the next needed step in the technology development process. So, we investigated overview of tidal in-stream energy in the sea near Wando, and then analytically estimated tidal energy resources and annual energy output of TECS arrays.

  • Tidal current power generation is a power generation method that produces energy using tidal currents generated by tidal phenomena. Tidal current power generation is a sustainable and regular energy production because tidal phenomenon occurs as long as the earth exists. Many countries are focusing on the development of tidal energy, but there are still concerns about the impact of tidal energy on the marine animals. In the present study, we reviewed on the various impacts of tidal power generation on marine animals and the future assignments.

  • The present paper relates to an integration power system combining tidal power generation and ocean current power generation, and more particularly, to an integration power system combining a tidal power plant and two ocean current power parks, which is capable of increasing the operating rate of power facilities and efficiently generating electrical energy by using incoming seawater into the lake through turbine generators of a tidal power plant or fast flow of seawater discharged to a sea side through sluice gates of a tidal power dam. It is shown that the integration power system is a new promising ocean power system and the ocean current turbine generators in the ocean current power parks of the integration power system are smaller in size and larger in power generation capacity compared with the tidal current turbine generators in the ocean.

  • Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become more important nationally. Having very strong current on the west coast with up to 10 m tidal range, there are many suitable site for the application of TCP (Tidal Current Power) in Korea. On the south west regions between many islands that create strong current in the narrow channels. The rotor is one of the essential components which can convert tidal current energy into rotational energy to generate electricity. The design optimization of rotor is very important to maximize the power production. The performance of rotor can be determined by various parameters including number of blades, shape, sectional size, diameters and etc. This paper introduces the multi-layer vertical axis tidal current power system which can be applied to offshore jetties and piers effectively. Various cases of VAT turbine were designed. Specifically, the number of blades and turbine shape are changed in several cases. Also, performance analysis was carried out by CFD.

  • Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become more important nationally. Due to the high tidal range of up to 9.7m on the west coast of Korea, numerous tidal current projects are being planned and constructed. To extract a significant quantity of power, a tidal current farm with a multi-arrangement is necessary in the ocean. The rotor, which initially converts the energy, is a very important component because it affects the efficiency of the entire system, and its performance is determined by various design variables. The power generation is strongly dependent on the size of the rotor and the incoming flow velocity. However, the interactions between devices also contribute significantly to the total power capacity. Therefore, rotor performance considering the interaction problems needs to be investigated for generating maximum power in a specific field. This paper documents the characteristics of wake induced by horizontal axis tidal current power turbine.

  • The Korean government is aiming to produce 20% of the electricity using renewable energy sources by 2030. Ocean renewable energy sources which are abundant in South Korea can do an important role to achieve the goal. This paper introduces a tidal current energy converter utilizing flow induced vibrations which can efficiently work even in the currents slower than 1.0m/s and suggests optimal designs of the tidal energy converter based on speeds of the tidal currents in seven different coastal regions in South Korea. Moreover, the theoretical annual energy production by the tidal converter is estimated at theses costal areas. The total amount of the annual energy production by the tidal energy converter is predicted as 221.77 TWh which is equivalent to 42.3% of the electric consumption of South Korea in 2013. The result shows that the tidal current energy converter can be an important role to achieve the goal of the Korean government.

  • Hyundai Heavy Industries has developed a tidal current energy converter utilizing the accumulated technology as the world largest constructor for ship and offshore structures. The model has two sets of turbines in both ends in order to utilize the bi-directional current flows in flood and ebb tide. The torque produced by turbine in tidal current is directly delivered to generator along the horizontal axis, in which the turbine, gear, generator, gear and turbine are connected successively. The manufactured model for field test has the turbine diameter of 5 meters to produce the maximum power of 500kW at maximum current speed of 5m/s. The technical verification of tidal power converter was performed by means of small scale model test in towing tank as well as field test at the Strait of Uldolmok located in Jindo of Jeollanamdo province. Field test was performed by mounting the tidal current converter on the SEP(Self Elevating Platform) which could lower the 4 vertical legs on the seabed and could elevate platform over the water surface using the hydraulic power for itself. The field test performed for a month shows that power output is similar or larger compared with the expected one in design stage. This paper presents the development of tidal current energy converter and real sea field test by Hyundai Heavy Industries. This project has finished successfully and provided the technical advance toward commercial services for tidal current power generation in the south-west region in Korea.
