From tidal current measurements on a tidal sand ridge in the Gyeonggi Bay from August 24 to September 29, 1987, tidal current velocities at 1.0 m above bottom (U/SUB 100/) and boundary shear velocities (U/SUB */) are calculated. The mean speeds of tidal current for flood and ebb over the entire period are 56.3 cm/sec and 63.7 cm/sec in mid-depth (9.0 m above bottom), and 43.9 cm/sec and 43.8 cm/sec in near-bottom (1.5 m above bottom). The exponent(P) in "power law", which is generally used for extrapolation from the mid-depth current velocity to that at the top of nationally logarithmic layer, is estimated to be 0.15 in the study area. Using logarithmic velocity profile assumption, mean values of U/SUB 100/ and U/SUB */ are calculated to be 41.4 cm/sec and 2.39 cm/sec, respectively. The mean value of U/SUB */ (2.39 cm/sec) is much higher than the critical shear velicity (U/SUB *c/) of 1.40 cm/sec reported by Choi (1990). and thus, it can be suggested that the most of sands on the tidal sand ridge in the study area are easily eroded and transported for the greater part of tidal period.
The Korean government is aiming to produce 20% of the electricity using renewable energy sources by 2030. Ocean renewable energy sources which are abundant in South Korea can do an important role to achieve the goal. This paper introduces a tidal current energy converter utilizing flow induced vibrations which can efficiently work even in the currents slower than 1.0m/s and suggests optimal designs of the tidal energy converter based on speeds of the tidal currents in seven different coastal regions in South Korea. Moreover, the theoretical annual energy production by the tidal converter is estimated at theses costal areas. The total amount of the annual energy production by the tidal energy converter is predicted as 221.77 TWh which is equivalent to 42.3% of the electric consumption of South Korea in 2013. The result shows that the tidal current energy converter can be an important role to achieve the goal of the Korean government.

This study evaluated tidal stream energy resources according to tidal flow properties around Uido off the west coast of, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. A feasibility study was first carried out through the collection of bathymetry data and tidal phase information. For this simulation, a depth-averaged 2D ADCIRC (Advanced Circulation) model for real sea situations was applied to a Finite Element Method (FEM) approach for tides given the variation of tidal current speed. Hydrodynamics were simulated with 4 major tidal constituents (M2, S2, K1, and O1) after setting up 4 observation points. From the real depth-averaged model simulation results, it was found that the spring tide Higher High Water (HHW) and tidal current speed values at the 4 observation points were about 2.2 m and 1.33 m/s, respectively. The ADCIRC model results were analyzed with reference to the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency's (KHOA) observed data for verification. Furthermore, using topographical characteristics via the Tidal Flux Method (TFM), tidal energy density distribution was calculated, indicating a maximum tidal energy density of about $1.75kW/m^2$ for the 5 assessment areas around Uido. The tidal energy density was evaluated with consideration given to topographical characteristics as well as tidal elevation and tidal current speed to determine an optimum tidal farm candidate.
The Han River is the only waterway in Korea where estuary is not blocked by dykes so that tidal water is flowing in and out through the tidal reach. The extreme tidal range in the Yellow Sea causes an intense flood current, stretching over horizontal extents of tens of kilometers into the rivers. To elucidate the flow reversal by discharge conditions and transient tidal level in the Han river, numerical simulations were conducted under 7 boundary conditions for two days with 10 minute time step. As the flow conditions changed from low discharge and high tidal difference to high discharge and low tidal difference, the flow reversals became weaker and the velocity of forward flow direction became higher due to the increased flow momentums and decreased tidal differences. In the case of normal flow, the maximum reverse velocity was 0.4 m/s, which was equivalent to the maximum forward velocity. In addition, the pattern of the development and decay of forward and reverse flow was presented.
The temnoral variations of the suspended material concentration (SMC) during spring-neap tidal cycle was investigated at more than 30 stations in Deukryang Bay, Korea, in 1 and 23 July, 1992. The averaged total SMC in spring tide was two times more than those in neap tide. It can be explained that the strong tidal current in spring tide disturbed bottom waters and induced higher SMC in the bay. The areal distributions of SMC for the surface and the bottom layers in the bay shows much different patterns during spring and neap tidal cycle. We concluded that the vertical stratification intensity of water mass is important factor of the horizonatal distribution of SMC in the bay.
Tidal power can use conventional technology to extract energy from the tides. It is usually best deployed in areas where there i s a high tical range which includes Western and Southern coastal areas in Korea. However, to extract tical energy, a barrage across an estuary or a bay is to be constructed that is now very hard due to severe environmental impact on local estuary. The recent technology of application of tidal stream provides a new window to extract power minimizing the adverse environmental impact Tidal stream technology which directly exploits these currents is relatively new but is presently generating considerable interest Turbine rotors can be used to extract energy from the flows. Prototype devices currently on test in the UK include the 300kW SeaFlow turbine. In this paper, the recent technology and research on ocean tical stream power are addressed
X-SAR images taken on the coastal waters of Hwanghe province in Korea during SIR-C/X-SAR campaign in April and October 1994 are analysed. The SAR images show the peculiar signatures like nail marks, curved long string, and vortex street patterns and they all seem to be produced by strong interactions between the topography in the coastal waters and tidal currents. The nail mark signatures are located at the same position of small scaled sand banks and the curved line patterns are almost identical to the outer boundary of large sand banks. Based on the tidal records, all the three images are taken at the almost same phase of tidal cycles, which are close to the low tide. It seems that bottom shapes are more strongly appeared on the SAR images when the tidal currents are slow. The front between two different current velocities caused by the flows along the steep boundaries of sandbanks is also the main factors imprinting the bottom features to the sea surface SAR images.

The flow pattern and water mass structure in the Chungmu channel were investigated using the field observations during June and July, 2001. The currents in the channel may be regarded as a hydraulic current decided by difference of tide levels between two sides in the channel. The strongest current in the channel occurs around in high water and low water. The coefficient C to be determined the characteristics of velocity in the channel was obtained from an equation, $u=C{\sqrt{2gh}}$ and ranges from 0.37 to 0.65 in the Chungmu Channel at the spring tide and from 0.23 to 0.37 at the neap tide. Eastward tidal transport is usually larger than that of westward transport in Chungmu the Channel. Sea water exchange rates are 39.2% in spring tide and 20.5% in neap tide respectively. The water mass structure in the channel is changed by the speed of the tidal current. The water mass is well mixed at the high water when the current is strong and is stratified at slack water when the current is weak.

The reclamation area of Saemangeum (Kunsan) located between 126$^{\circ}$10' -126$^{\circ}$50'E and and 35$^{\circ}$35'N -36$^{\circ}$05'N at the western coast of Korea. The construction of the 33km sea dike is building in the Saemangeum area. When the construction of the sea dike in the coastal region takes plase, there exists a certain amount of soil which is diffused by the tidal current. Behavior of the soil diffusion usually depends on its intrinsic characteristics, bathymetry, construction method and used mchinery. The amount of soil at the construction acts as a pollutant which is the cause of changing the marine environment. When the soil material is diffused , it may form a layer which obstructs the light passing into the sea and causes the extinction or alteration of the living beings on the sea bottom. The settlement of soil material could change the sea bottom deposit. The purpose of MITIGATION is to harmonize the development and the conservation of environment, to restrict environmental destruction and to reproduce the enviroment damaged by the construction in the coastal region. The purpose of this study is to find the method by which we minimize the anti-function of development in the coastal region. Tide and tidal current are calculated using a two-dimensional numerical model before the construction of sea dike in Saemangeum Bay. The numerical results are compared well with field observations. On the basis of these results, we caculated the tide and tidal current after the construction of the sea dike in order to investigate the change of the tide and tidal current after the construction of the sea dike. Moreover, we calculated the tide and tidal current after the construction of submerged breakwater in order to preserve the enviornmental condition of creature habitat . We compared the tide and tidal current before and after the construction of submerbed breakwater, to investigate the possbility of MITIGATION in the fisheries.

The empirical evaluation of grid-connected tidal current generation system is presented in this paper. The Ul-dol-mok in Jin-do has been estimated to have tidal power of 1GW. In order to experiment, HAT (Horizontal Axis Turbine) 3-blade and 20kW grid-connected tidal current generation system was established at Ul-dol-mok in Jin-do. To generate power of generator, the speed reference of the PMSG is generated from the Cp curve and TSR (Tip Speed Ratio) of the designed turbine. The control of the converter connected to the grid is controlled to regulate unity power factor. The result showed that the turbine efficiency and system efficiency is 37 % and 31 %. This was achieved that target rate is 30 %, 20 %, respectively.
