거문도 바다숲 조성해역의 해수유동 특성 (Tidal Current Characteristics around the Geomoondo Marine Afforestation)

  • 거문도 바다숲 조성해역의 해수유동 특성을 파악하기 위하여 현장조사 및 수치실험을 통하여 바다숲 조성해역의 조석류에 의한 해수 흐름을 분석하였다. 수치실험에 사용된 수치모형은 EFDC(Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code)를 사용하여 연직방향으로 총 5개 층을 나누어 실험을 수행하였다. 수치모형의 검증은 조위 및 조류 각 2개 정점의 조화분석을 통한 조화상수 비교를 통하여 수치실험결과와 관측결과가 잘 일치하고 조시별 유동장을 잘 재현하고 있음을 확인하였다. 수치실험결과, 바다숲 조성해역의 해수흐름패턴은 대상해역 바깥쪽의 주류에 비해 방파제의 역할을 하는 밖노루섬으로 인해 흐름이 약해지고, 잔차류는 주로 북서방향의 흐름이 형성되나 크기는 미약하게 나타나 포자나 유배 등이 만내에 체류할 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 바다숲 조성시설물을 효율적으로 배치할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

  • Recently, focus has been placed on ocean energy resources because environmental concerns regarding the exploitation of hydrocarbons are increasing. Tidal current power, one of the ocean energy resources, has great potential worldwide due to its high energy density. The flow velocity is the most crucial factor for the power estimation of TCP(Tidal Current Power) system since the kinetic energy of the flow is proportional to the cube of the flow speed. So sufficient inflow speed to generate electricity from the tidal current power is necessary. A duct system can accelerate the flow velocity, which could expand the applicable area of TCP systems to relatively lower velocity sites. The shapes of the inlet and outlet could affect the flow rate inside the duct. To investigate the performance of the duct, various ducts were preliminary designed considering the entire system that is single-point moored TCP system and a series of simulations were carried out using ANSYS-CFX v13.0 CFD software. This study introduces a ducted turbine system that can be moored to a seabed. A performance estimation and comparison of results with conventional tidal converters were summarized in this paper.

  • 최근 기후변화를 초래하는 화석연료의 사용을 감축하는 세계적 추세와 함께 유엔기후협약으로 인한 에너지의 안정적 공급을 위해 많은 노력이 요구되고 있다. 따라서 조류에너지와 같은 해양자원의 이용이 주목을 받고 있으며, 이러한 조류자원은 집중된 중력에너지 형태로 존재하며, 이러한 조류에너지는 매우 크지만 제한된 지역에 분포하고 있으므로 조류에너지를 효과적으로 이용하기 위해서는 반드시 기술적, 경제적인 측면의 평가가 요구된다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 완도해역에서의 조류에너지를 평가하기 위해 수심, 조석, 조류 등을 조사하고, 관측 자료를 바탕으로 완도 해역의 부존 조류에너지를 추산하고, 이용 가능한 연평균 에너지를 계산하였다.

  • In order to understand the tidal current and mean flow at the west channel of Yeoja Bay in the South Sea of Korea, numerical model experiments and vorticity analysis were carried out. The currents flow north at flood and south at ebb respectively and have the reversing form in the west channel. Topographical eddies are found in the surroundings of Dunbyong Island in the east of the channel. The flood currents flow from the waters near Naro Islands through the west channel and the coastal waters near Geumo Islands through the east channel. The ebb currents from the Yeoja Bay flow out along the west and the east channels separately. The south of Nang Island have weak flows because the island is located in the rear of main tidal stream. Currents are converged at ebb and diverged at flood in the northwest of Jeokgum Island. Tidal current ellipses show reversing form in the west channel but a kind of rotational form in the east channel. As the results of tide induced mean flows, cyclonic and anticyclonic topographical eddies at the northern tip but eddies with opposite spin at the southern tip are found in the west channel of Yeoja Bay. The topographical eddies around the islands and narrow channels are created from the vorticity formed at the land shore by the friction between tidal currents and the west channel.

Optimal Design of a MW Class SCSG for a Tidal Current Power Generation System

  • A superconducting synchronous generator (SCSG) can be expected to decrease the size and weight compared to conventional tidal current generators. This paper proposes an optimal design of a 2 MW class SCSG for a tidal current power generation system. The proposed optimal design of the SCSG will reduce the length of the high-temperature superconducting wire as well as the weight and volume of the SCSG. The 3D finite element method is used to analyze the magnetic field distribution. The optimized 2 MW SCSG is compared with a 2 MW conventional generator. As the optimized SCSG is more compact and lighter than a conventional generator, it will be efficiently applied to practical tidal power systems.

  • Uldolmok waterway is famous for its strong tidal current with maximum current of about 12knots, which is located between the Chindo island off the southwestern tip of Korean peninsula and mainland. A serious of field observations, along with numerical modeling, have been carried out over the last several years, in order to understand the tidal dynamics and to examine the related variables according to the tidal current power plant (TCPP) operation.

Depth contours appeared on SAR images by interactions between tidal current and bottom topography

  • X-SAR images taken on the coastal waters of Hwanghe province in Korea during SIR-C/X-SAR campaign in April and October 1994 are analysed. The SAR images show the peculiar signatures like nail marks, curved long string, and vortex streets patterns and they all seem to be produced by strong interactions between the topography in the coastal waters and tidal currents. The nail mark signatures are located at the same position of small scaled sand banks and the curved line patterns are almost identical to the outer boundary of large sand banks. Based on the tidal record, all the three images are taken at the almost same phase of tidal cycles, which are close to the low tide. It seems that bottom shapes are more strongly appeared on the SAR images when the tidal currents are slow. The front between two different current velocities caused by the flows along the steep boundaries of sandbanks is also the main factors imprinting the bottom features to the sea surface SAR images

An Estimation of Tidal Currents from Satellite-tracked Drifters and its Application to the Yellow Sea

  • A simple but effective method has been developed for estimating diurnal and semi-diurnal tidal currents from trajectories of satellite-tracked drifters. The estimation method consists of separation of tidal current signals contained in the drifter trajectories, computation of undulations by diurnal and semi-diurnal currents, and correction of dominant diurnal and semi-diurnal tidal constituents. M$_2$ tidal currents estimated from drifter trajectories in the Yellow Sea are well consistent with those observed by moored current meters and this supports the validity of this method. We have constructed M$_2$ tidal current chart in the Yellow Sea by applying this method to available drifter trajectories collected during 1994-1998. According to this chart, M$_2$ current in the Yellow Sea rotates in the clockwise direction south of 35$^{\circ}$ 30'N but in the counterclockwise one to the north. Also it is found that the M$_2$ current is strong in the bank area northeast of the Changjiang River mouth and in the Korean coastal area, while it is weak in the deep central trough.

도류제에 의한 항만내 조류제어 연구 (Flow-Guider Applied to Controlling Current in a Bay)

  • This paper deals with a numerical study of flow-guider applied to controlling current in a bay. Two dimensional numerical model for tidal currents based on the depth averaged equation is developed and standard k-.epsilon. model is adopted to determine the turbulence diffusion. Equations are described in a generalized coordinate system to be implemented by non-staggered grid system and discretized by using finite volume method. Unsteady flow is simulated by fully implicit scheme. Hybrid scheme and central differencing are used to compute the convective terms and source terms, respectively. The tidal current in a rectangular bay is simulated and it gives satisfactory results. The realistic and distinct models of a large structure placed in bay are also exemplified with or without flow-guiders. The simulation results show that the flow-guider gives the residual tidal current in the bay by the different flux with respect to the direction of tidal current.

한강하구 염하수로 주변에서의 조석·조류 비대칭과 창·낙조 우세 분석 (Analysis of Tidal Asymmetry and Flood/Ebb Dominance around the Yeomha Channel in the Han River Estuary)

  • 한강하구 염하수로 주변의 조석 조류 변형과 창 낙조 우세를 분석하기 위해서 4개 정점에서 동기간에 관측한 조류자료와 기 관측된 조석자료를 분석하였다. 조석 및 조류의 변형 정도는 $M_4/M_2$ 진폭비를 분석한 결과 상류로 갈수록 증가하며, 조석의 상대 위상차($2M_2-M_4$)를 계산하면 모든 정점의 값이 $180^{\circ}C$ 이하로 창조 우세를 보여준다. 그러나 조류자료의 통계분석 결과를 보면 조석 조화상수의 상대 위상차 결과와는 다르게 최강 평균 낙조가 창조에 비하여 강하게 나타나며, 정조시각을 이용하여 창조, 낙조 지속시간을 계산하면 낙조 지속시간이 길게 나타난다. 각 조류 관측정점의 주축 방향 유속성분의 상관도를 분석한 결과 인천항 이후 염하수로 북쪽입구까지는 상관도 값이 0.9 이상으로 높게 나타났다. 조류 분석결과에서 보여지는 낙조가 우세하고 낙조 지속시간이 긴 형태의 원인을 분석하기 위해서 조화분해 결과를 재구성하였다. 주 분조($M_2$)와 천해 분조($M_4$)를 결합하면 창조가 우세하고 낙조 지속시간이 긴 전형적인 창조우세 형태의 곡선이 나타난다. 그러나 이 곡선에 조류 성분의 산술 합으로 계산한 비 조류성분(잔차류)의 값을 더하면 낙조가 강해지고 낙조 지속시간이 긴 형태로 나타난다. 즉, 천해분조에 의해서 발생하는 상류방향의 흐름을 극복하는 담수와 하구 비선형 효과에 의해서 생성되는 장주기 조류성분과 같은 낙조방향의 평균적인 흐름이 존재하기 때문에 독특한 낙조심화 현상이 염하수로에서 나타난다.
