  • In order to estimate the tide and flow properties around the archipelago, around Dolsan, Choyak, Geogeom and Jindo which located in the southwestern waters of the south sea of Korea, tidal currents, residual flows and tidal energy dissipation were investigated by using 2-dimensional numerical model. The maximum speeds of tidal currents are small around Dolsando(31.92 cm/s) and large around Jindo(87.55 cm/s). The residual flow is fastest around Choyakdo where many channels and islands as compared with other study areas. The area around Jindo has the highest currents speed, but shows the flat movements. The margins between the maximum and the minimum dispersion rates of tidal energy in the areas are estimated and designate the order of values around Dolsando($392.6{\times}10^7$ erg/s), Geogeumdo($125.7{\times}10^7$ erg/s) and Jindo($23.1{\times}10^7$ erg/s) sequently. These circumstances are same as in the amplitude of M2 constituent. This means that rapid depth changes and narrow channels play an important role in tide and tidal currents energy in archipelago.

  • Garolim Bay is typically a semi-enclosed bay without a significant supply of freshwater and sediments from surrounding drainage area. The bay have a variety of subenvironments including deep tidal channels, tidal flats, sand dunes, islands, and inlet. Because environmental quality of bay strongly depends on the exchange of water over benthic subenvironments, it is necessary to analyze quantitatively exchange of water between sea and bay. Hydro-hypsography is the relative distribution of water-surface areas at different depths. The hydro-hypsographic curve in Garolim bay shows that the tidal flats occupy about 77 % of the bay surface. Hydraulic turn-over time (HTT) is 1.32 tidal cycles which indicate well-flushed bay. Hydro-hypsometric techniques will be useful for assessments of health of bays.

  • A total of 40 surface samples(12 from the intertidal flat and 28 from the subtidal zone) from Gwangyang Bay, southern coast of the Korean Peninsula show a strong negative relationship between the total foraminiferal abundance and the ratios of the live to the total(L/T) assemblages. This suggests that the foraminiferal abundance is dependent on the dilution due to the input of detrital sediments, and that the L/T ratios show the relative rate of sedimentation in the study area. The intertidal flat and delta area are characterized by the relatively high sedimentation compared to the inner bay and shallow subtidal zone, and three major tidal channels where relatively low and no sedimentation is noted, respectively. Bathymetric occurrence of the species shows distinct boundaries at 9m, and between 21 and 30m, respectively. Cluster analysis shows three biotopes;intertidal flat including delay, inner bay and shallow subtidal zone, and major tidal channels. This suggests that these biotopes are formed by the ecology of the foraminifers as well as by the sedimentological setting of the study area. Several problems in relation to the relative rate of sedimentation inferred from the L/T ratios are briefly discussed.

  • Around Tongyeong coasts which located in southern coast of Korea composed to the complex coastal line and scattered by small islands. It also has been distributed to a complicated bathymetric structure by several types of channels. This study carried to analyze the spatial characteristics of macrobenthic community and benthic environmental variance on sub-tidal area based on multivariate statistics tools. Sediment composition varied from muddy sand to mud, and along the channels, it composed to a heterogeneous bottoms mixed by shell fragment, cobbles and mud. Organic contents on the surface sediment varied 1.1-3.9%. Total of 272 species, $33,349\;ind./m^2$ of macrobenthos identified in all of sample area. Polychaetes also prevailed among the specimen. L. longifolia, P. pinnata dominated based on density. Considering on the biomass, echinoderm S. lacunosa, A. tricoides listed. Closer to the coastal area, the density and diversity were higher. Community structure based on cluster analysis was discriminated into three groups. Each group was also characterized by geographical state such as depth, sediment composition. In addition, when applied to the bathymetric data, the channel, which composed to the mixed sediment, made a role of limited factor which characterized to benthic community. Because the specimen around the channel have been affected on the diverse sediment mixture. Most of benthic studies in the southern coast of Korea focused to the condition of benthic organic pollution spatially, because along the coast, it also developed a aquaculture ground and industrial complex. But, as results, most of the area, it turn out the less polluted areas nevertheless similar environment situation. It supposed that benthic community affect to the bottom sediment composition by physical characteristics.

  • Along with the growing interest in renewable energy development, Korea's west coast is one of the favorable regions for tidal power. Tidal power using tidal barrages that work like hydroelectric dams is a representative method of tidal power through long-term operation, but the promotion of tidal power projects is being delayed or stopped due to impacts on ecological changes, reproduction, water column processes and hydrology. In order to reduce the high construction cost and environmental cost problems caused by tidal power using tidal barrages, in this study, field experiments were conducted to develop and verify the performance of tidal power generation devices applicable to sea areas where dykes are already installed. As a result of conducting five cases of experiments using two water tanks, pipe lines, open channels, and water turbine and generator, the possibility of developing a power generation system capable of generating more than 10 kW output and more than 60% efficiency were confirmed. The results of this study can be used for small-scale tidal power by utilizing the existing dykes of the west coast.

  • Due to global warming, the need to secure alternative resources has become more important nationally. Because of the very strong current on the west coast, with a tidal range of up to 10 m, there are many suitable sites for the application of TCP (tidal current power) in Korea. In the southwest region, a strong current is created in the narrow channels between the numerous islands. A rotor is an essential component that can convert tidal current energy into rotational energy to generate electricity. The design optimization of a rotor is very important to maximize the power production. The performance of a rotor can be determined using various parameters, including the number of blades, shape, sectional size, diameter, etc. There are many offshore jetties and piers with high current velocities. Thus, a VAT (vertical axis turbine) system, which can generate power regardless of flow direction changes, could be effectively applied to cylindrical structures. A VAT system could give an advantage to a caisson-type breakwater because it allows water to circulate well. This paper introduces a multi-layer vertical axis tidal current power system. A Savonius turbine was designed, and a performance analysis was carried out using CFD. A physical model was also demonstrated in CWC, and the results are compared with CFD.

  • The basic research of the estuarine circulation at Gyeong-Gi bay has not been well studied up to now, although coastal development pressures have been continuously increased. To understand the oceanographic phenomena at the Han River estuary, it's essential to understand the propagation characteristic of tidal wave which is the strongest external forcing in this region. In this study, we investigate the tidal wave propagation characteristics along the 3 major channels using observation data and numerical model. It is found that 3 channels are all hyper-synchronous and the most important physical factor controlling the tidal wave propagation is topographical convergence of estuary shape and friction. The result of analytic solution at ideal channel considering the topographical convergence and friction show that the contribution of physical role of convergence and friction varies at 3 different channel. And the ratio of convergence and friction at Yeomha channel is four times larger than Seokmo channel. Because of this effect, the location of maximum amplitude at Yeomha channel is showed up downward than Seokmo channel. The ratio of decreasing amplitude and increasing phase per unit distance between stations is bigger than Seokmo channel. Although 3 major channel show a hyper-synchronous pattern, Yeomha shows more frictionally dominant channel and Seokmo channel is more dominantly affected by convergence effect.

  • In order to understand the flow of currents around Aphae Island and the surrounding Archipelago, the numerical model experiments on tidal currents and tide-induced residual currents were carried out. Dominant semidiurnal tidal currents have a reversing form and flow along the narrow channels of the archipelago. During periods of flood, currents flow from the west of Hwawon Peninsula to the archipelago to the northwest together with the currents flowing from the channels at Palgeum Island to Amtae Island and Amtae Island to Jeung Island. Ebb currents flow from the northwest archipelago to the channel of Amtae Island and Jeung Island as well as Amtae Island to Palgeum Island, further flowing south between Palgeum Island and Hwawon Peninsula. Flood currents are separated from east and west at the southern coast of Aphae Island, but flow south from both the west and east of Aphae Island to the channel found between Palgeum Island and Hwawon Peninsula at ebb. Flow speed is high between Amtae Island and Aphae Island where the flows meet and join. Lee wakes or topographical eddies are formed around the islands due to the high speed of the currents flowing along the narrow channel in the archipelago, manifesting as a tide-induced residual current. A weak cyclonic wake and anti-cyclonic eddy both exist at the west and northwestern coast of Aphae Island individually. The speed of the tide-induced residual current become slow on account of the wide littoral zone at exists around Aphae Island.

  • The Seokmo and Yeomha channels are representative areas of high tidal energy in the Han River estuary. Surveys of environmental variables and abundance of Coilia spp. larvae, an anadromous fish, were carried out following the tidal cycle in August 2007 and August 2008. It was found that mean water temperature varied by <$1^{\circ}C$ across flood and ebb tides. A clear difference in salinity was observed between tides, with a high of 15.1 psu during flood tide, and a low of 0.8 psu during ebb tide. Coilia spp. larvae were significantly more abundant during the ebb tide than the flood tide (p<0.05). Since Coilia spp. larvae are anadromous fish, it seems that they use the ebb tide as a Selective tidal stream transport (STST) for horizontal movement in order to settle in the estuary (cultivation area), following hatching in the upper/middle courses of the Han River. A high percentage of larvae with improved swimming ability (measuring ${\geq}13.6mm$ in length) was observed during the ebb tide.

  • A series of echo-sounding and current measurements as well as the drogue and the drift bottle experiments were carried out in Asan Bay since November 1974. Several sand bars or sand flats covered by silts were developed at ebb tide in the bay. Sand waves and sand ripples were seen on the surface of the sand bars, around which sea channels of 8~ 12 meters in depth are formed. The main stream axis of the flood current which is separated into east and west branch flows southward. A cyclonic and an anticyclonic eddy are developed at the early stage of flood tide. They are transformed into a clockwise eddy before the slack water. The maximum tidal current speed observed was 3.1 ~ 3.2 knots at the entrance of the bay, while it was 1.O ~ 2.8 knots in the bay. The location of the main stream axis of the tidal current coincides well with the sea channel. A salt wedge was observed at the estuary of the Sabgyo-cheon River.
