  • In this study, Ti powder was fabricated from Ti scrap by the Hydrogenation-Dehydrogenation (HDH) method. Hydrogenation reactions of Ti scrap occurred at near 450 $^{\circ}C$ with a sudden increase in the reaction temperature and the decreasing pressure of hydrogen gas during the hydrogenation process in the furnace. The dehydrogenation process was also carried out at 750 $^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in a vacuum of $10^{-4}$ torr. After the HDH process, a deoxidation treatment was carried out with the Ca(purity: 99.5) at 700 $^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in the vacuum system. It was found that the oxidation content of Ti powder that was deoxidized with Ca showed noticeably lower values, compared to the content obtained by HDH process. In order to fabricate Ti compacts, Ti powder was sintered at $1100\sim1400^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs under a vacuum of $10^{-4}$ torr. The relative density of compact was 94.9% at 1300 $^{\circ}C$. After sintering, all of the Ti compacts showed brittle fracture behavior, which occurred in an elastic range with short plastic yielding up to a peak stress.

  • Titanium scrap was re-melted and refined by using a DC-ESR (Direct Current Electro Slag Remelting) apparatus. A graphite rod was used as an anode. The used slag was $CaF_2-TiO_2-CaO$ slag system. The effect of slag composition on the shape and oxygen content of re-melted ingot was studied. The titanium ingot was produced very well from the $CaF_2-TiO_2$ slag system, and the oxygen content of the ingot was less than that of titanium scrap. The addition of CaO into $CaF_2-TiO_2$ slag system made the bad shape of titanium ingot. The oxygen content of the ingot was also higher than that of titanium scrap.

  • The effect of additives on the castability of the AC2BS aluminum alloy, which contains 35% recycled scrap, was investigated. For the wide utilization of the recycled scrap AC2BS aluminum alloy, the research results were compared to those with the AC2B virgin alloy, which is typical Al-Si-Cu alloy system. It was confirmed that the addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B increased the ${\alpha}$-Al nucleation temperature during solidification and decreased the grain size through cooling curve and microstructural observations of the recycled alloy. It was also found that an addition of Al-10%Sr decreased the eutectic Si growth temperature during the solidification process and modified the shape of the eutectic Si of the recycled alloy. The characteristics of fluidity, shrinkage and solidification crack strength were evaluated. For the AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap, both ${\alpha}$-Al grain refinement due to Ti-B and eutectic Si modifications due to Sr contributed to the improvement of the fluidity. The macro- shrinkage ratio increased with additions of both Al-10%Sr and Al-5%Ti-1%B and the micro-shrinkage ratio increased with the addition of Al-10%Sr but decreased with the addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B. The casting characteristics of TiB and Sr-treated AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap are similar to those of AC2B virgin alloy. The improvement of the solidification crack strength of the AC2BS aluminum alloy was possible by the reduction of the grain boundary the stress concentration through the enhancement by both ${\bullet}{\cdot}$-Al refinement and eutectic Si modification. More extensive use of the AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap can be expected in the future.

  • In this study, Ti powder was fabricated from Ti scrap by a hydrogenation-dehydrogenation (HDH) method. The Ti powders were compacted by Spark plasma sintering (SPS) and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the powders were investigated. A hydrogenation reaction of Ti scrap occurred at temperatures near $450^{\circ}C$ with a sudden increase in the reaction temperature and a decrease in the pressure of the hydrogen gas as measured in a furnace during the hydrogenation process. In addition, a dehydrogenation process was carried out at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in a vacuum of $10^{-4}torr$. The Ti powder sizes obtained by hydrogenation-dehydrogenation and mechanical milling processes were in the range of $1{\sim}90{\mu}m$ and $1{\sim}100{\mu}m$, respectively. To fabricate Ti compacts, Ti powders were sintered under an applied uniaxial punch pressure of 40 MPa at in a range of $900{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ for 5 min. The relative density of a SPSed compact was 99.6% at $1100^{\circ}C$, and the tensile strength decreased with an increase in the sintering temperature. However, the hardness increased as the sintering temperature increased.

  • To synthesize the Ti3AlC2 MAX phase, a crucial precursor for generating the two-dimensional material MXene, the use of Ti scrap as an initial material is an economically feasible approach. This study aims to optimize the synthesis conditions for the phase fraction of the Ti3AlC2 MAX phase utilizing Ti scrap as the Ti source. The deoxidation of Ti powders, prepared through the hydrogenation-dehydrogenation process from Ti scrap, was effectively accomplished using the deoxidation in solid-state (DOSS) process. The optimal synthesis conditions were established by blending DOSS-Ti, Al, and graphite powders with particle sizes ranging from 25 ~ 32 ㎛ in a molar ratio of 3:1.1:2. The resulting phase fractions were as follows: Ti3AlC2 at 97.25 wt.%, TiC at 0.93 wt.%, and Al3Ti at 1.82 wt.%. Furthermore, the oxygen content of the Ti3AlC2 MAX powder, spanning from 25 ~ 45 ㎛, was measured at 4,210 ppm.

  • Off-grade Ti generated from smelting and mechanical processing has a high oxygen content. In this work, off-grade Ti was deoxidized using Mg and a chloride mixture as the reductant and flux, respectively. The experiments were conducted in the α-Ti temperature range (1,023~1,123 K) and the effects of the reaction time, reaction temperature, quantitiy of Mg and chloride ratio on deoxidation were investigated. Notably, when YCl3 is used as the flux to react with MgO, it is possible to reduce the activity of MgO. Therefore Ti can be deoxidized using Mg. In this study, the O content was decreased from 0.5 wt% to 0.1004 wt% at 1073 K, for 6 hours, with Mg=3.6 g and $X_{YCl_3}=0.22$.

  • A type of titanium alloy, ferro-titanium, is the main material used to manufacture steel and stainless steel. Considering economic aspects, ferro-titanium ingots are intended to be manufactured using low-cost titanium scrap, and the best pretreatment process for removing impurities from recycled titanium scrap surfaces was studied here. Instead of ordinary acid or organic solvents, ecofriendly methods were researched and applied, and chip scrap materials were used. A high-quality ferro-titanium ingot was manufactured from titanium scrap after a pretreatment process was applied, and the impurities and properties were analyzed and compared with commercial material standards through a component analysis.

  • The effects of Sr and (Ti-B) additives on the tensile properties of AC4A recycled (35% scrap content) aluminum alloys were investigated. An acicular morphology of the eutectic Si phase of as-cast specimens was converted to a fibrous morphology upon the addition of Sr. Moreover, morphology of the Sr modified eutectic Si phase became finer due to a T6 heat treatment. The grain size of the ${\alpha}$-solid solution was decreased by the addition of (Ti-B) additives. Depending on the treatment conditions of the as-cast specimens, i.e., no addition, a Sr addition and a (Ti-B)+Sr addition, the tensile strength levels of the as-cast specimens were 182, 192, and 204MPa, respectively. The corresponding strengths of T6 heat-treated specimens were 293, 308, and 318MPa. Elongations of the as-cast specimens were 2.2, 3.1, and 5.6%, and the corresponding elongations of the T6 heat-treated specimens were 4.6, 6.1, and 7.6%. The percentage of the reduced section area in the tensile specimens was also increased by the Sr and (Ti-B) additives. Sr and (Ti-B) additives changed the microstructure and the distribution of defects in the castings, resulting in an improvement of the tensile properties of AC4A aluminum alloys. According to our test results, recycled (35% scrap content) AC4A aluminum alloy met all of the KS requirements of the tensile strength and elongation values of AC4A aluminum alloy except for the elongation value of the one specimen condition, in this case the as-cast no-addition condition.
