This study evaluated the grindability of series of Ti-Cu alloys in order to develop a Ti alloy with better grindability than commercially pure titanium(CP Ti). Experimental Ti-Xwt%Cu alloys(X=2, 5, 10) were made in an argon-arc melting furnace. Slabs of experimental alloys were ground using a SiC abrasive wheel on an electric handpiece at circumferential speed(15000, 30000rpm) by applying a force(250, 300gr). Grindability was evaluated by measuring the amount of metal volume removed after grinding for 2 minutes. Data were compared to those for CP Ti and Ti-6wt%Al-4wt%V alloy. From results, It was observed that the grindability of Ti-Cu alloys increased with an increase in the Cu concentration compared to CP Ti, particularly the 10wt%Cu alloy exhibited the highest grindability at all speeds. By alloying with Cu, the Ti exhibited better grindability at high speed. The continuous precipitation of $Ti_2Cu$ among the ${\alpha}$-matrix grains made this material less ductile and facilitated more effective grinding because small segments more readily formed. The Ti-10wt%Cu alloy has a great potential for use as a dental machining alloy.
Electrochemical characteristics of Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys coated with HA/TiN by using magnetron sputtering method were studied. The Ti-30Ta containing Zr(3, 7, 10 and 15wt%) were 10 times melted to improve chemical homogeneity by using a vacuum furnace and then homogenized for 24hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The specimens were cut and polished for corrosion test and coating, and then coated with HA/TiN, respectively, by using DC and RF-magnetron sputtering method. The analyses of coated surface and coated layer were carried out by using optical microscope(OM), field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) and X-ray diffractometer(XRD). The electrochemical characteristics were examined using potentiodynamic (-1,500 mV~ + 2,000 mV) and A.C. impedance spectroscopy(100 kHz ~ 10 mHz) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of homogenized Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys showed needle-like structure. In case of homogenized Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys, a-peak was increased with increasing Zr content. The thickness of TiN and HA coated layer showed 400 nm and 100 nm, respectively. The corrosion resistance of HA/TiN-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys were higher than that of the non-coated Ti-30TaxZr alloys, whic hindicate better protective effect. The polarization resistance($R_p$) value of HA/TiN coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys showed $8.40{\times}10^5{\Omega}cm^2$ which was higher than that of non-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys.
The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of Ti alloys for medical implants have been investigated. Ti, Ti-15Sn-4Nb and Ti-15Sn-4Nb-2Zr alloys were melted in arc furnace and the corrosion resistance of Ti alloys was evaluated by anodic polarization test. The microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti alloys were analysed by optical microscope, hardness and tensile tester. The tensile strength of the pure-Ti improved by addition of Sn and Nb and Ti-15Sn-4Nb alloy showed better Rockwell hardness compared with pure Ti. However, there was no significant difference in corrosion resistance between thoseTi-alloys made of Pure-Ti and Ti-15Sn-4Nb alloy. The passive films on the Ti-15Sn-4Nb alloy in air atmosphere consisted of $TiO_2$, SnO and NbO as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)
Ti and Ti alloys have been extensively used in the medical and dental fields because of their good corrosion resistance, high strength to density ratio and especially, their low elastic modulus compared to other metallic materials. Recent trends in biomaterials research have focused on development of metallic alloys with elastic modulus similar to natural bone, however, many candidate materials also contain toxic elements that would be biologically harmful. In this study, new Ti based alloys which do not contain the toxic metallic components were developed using a theoretical method (DV-$X{\alpha}$). In addition, alloys were developed with improved mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Ternary Ti-Ag-Zr alloys consisting of biocompatible alloying elements were produced to investigate the alloying effect on microstructure, corrosion resistance, mechanical properties and biocompatibility. The effects of various contents of Zr on the mechanical properties and biocompatibility were compared. The alloys exhibited higher strength and corrosion resistance than pure Ti, had antibacterial properties, and were not observed to be cytotoxic. Of the designed alloys' mechanical properties and biocompatibility, the Ti-3Ag-0.5Zr alloy had the best results.
The microstructure, mechanical properties and melting range of Ni-Cr-Mo based alloys were investigated to develop Be-free Ni-Cr-Mo base dental alloys for Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Firing(PFM). All as-cast alloys showed dendritic structure. Rockwell hardness of 20Cr7Mo was increased with addition of Si and Ti. On the contrary, it was decreased with addition of Co. The duplex alloying elemental addition such as 3Co + xTi, 2Si + xCo and 2Si + xTi to 20Cr7Mo resulted in much increase of hardness. Rockwell hardness and compressive strength for 20Cr3CoSiTi or 17Cr6CoSiTi alloy that add Si-Ti had similar values compared to the commercial alloys. Melting range for 20Cr3CoSiTi and 17Cr6CoSiTi alloy that add Si-Ti showed similar or lower than commercial alloys. In conclusion, 20Cr3CoSiTi and 17Cr6CoSiTi alloys can be applied for commercial use.

The characteristics of hydrogen storage have been investigated in the Ti-Cr-Mo and Ti-Cr-V ternary alloys with bcc structure. The alloys were melted by arc furnace and remelted 4-5 times for homogeneity. The lattice parameters, microstructures and phases of the alloys were examined by SEM, EDX and XRD, and the Pressure-Composition isotherms of the alloys were measured. From these data the relationship of the maximum and effective hydrogen storage capacities vs. chemical composition, lattice parameter and the radius of tetrahedral site were analyzed and discussed. The results showed that all of these alloy, in the range of the this study, had mainly bcc solid solutions with small amount of Ti segregation due to a lower melting point of Ti compared with other elements. Lattice parameters of the alloys were very near to the atomic average values of lattice parameters of the constituent elements. It was also found that maximum hydrogen storage capacities of the Ti-Cr-Mo alloys increased with increasing Ti content and the radius of tetrahedral site but the effective hydrogen storage capacities decreased after showing the maximum. The hydrogen storage capacities of the Ti-Cr-V alloys were almost same even though the V contens were quite different from alloy to alloy and this could be attributed to the almost same Ti/Cr ratio of the alloys. The maximum effective hydrogen storage capacity of the Ti-Cr-Mo alloys was revealed at Ti content of about 40${\sim}$50 at% and radius of tetrahedral site of 0.43${\sim}$0.45 nm. The Ti-Cr-V alloys showed the hydrogen storage capacities of 3.0 wt% and effective hydrogen storage capacities of 1.5 wt%.
Rapidly solidified and mechanically alloyed Al-Ti base alloys were prepared by gas atomization and attritor milling separately. The gas atomized and the mechanically alloyed powders were consolidated after preheating at $450^{\circ}C$, and then heat treated isochronally for 1 hour to observe the microstructures and to investigate the mechanical properties. Stable phases of precipitates in the Al-Ti-Si and the Al-Ti-Zr alloys were identified as DO22-$(Al,Si)_3Ti$ and $Do_{23}-Al_3(Ti, Zr)$ each. Among the alloys, the mechanically alloyed Al-l0Ti-2Si alloy showed superior thermal stability and mechanical properties at elevated temperature. The additions of third elements, such as Si and Zr, to Al-Ti alloys seemed to improve the mechnical properties remarkably by stabilizing the microstructure and the precipitate phases in the consolidated alloys.

The role dispersoids has been studied in a number of researches as a key point for the high strength application of dispersion strengthened aluminum alloy. The mechanical alloying(MA) process with high mechanical properties of dispersion strengthened MA Al-8Ti-1B alloys were invested in order to evaluate their stress corrosion cracking(SCC) application. SCC properties of the mechanically alloyed Al-8Ti-1B were studied using slow strain rate test(SSRT). In this study Al-8Ti-1B alloy were more susceptible to SCC in solutions of pH=2.01 and 13.2 than pH=6.81 solution. In this study Al-8Ti-1B alloys by MA had more SCC resistance than Al-8Ti alloys or Al 7075-T73 alloys. So Al-8Ti-1B alloys by MA had more resistance in SSRT SCC susceptinility test than any other above alloying metals.
The elevated temperature compressive tests were carried out in order to investigate the deformation behavior and microstructural characteristics of Al-8%Ti, Al-12%Ti and Al-16%Ti (wt%) alloys, which were mechanically alloyed and consolidated by vacuum hot pressing, A13Ti intermetallic phases were formed with sizes of few hundred nanometers in the mechanically alloyed Al-Ti alloys. The compressive strength of mechanically alloyed AA-Ti alloys increased with decroasing the temperature and with increasing the strain rate. The strain rate sensitivities of Al-8%Ti, Al-12%Ti and Al-16%Ti alloys were measured 0.02,0.03, and 0.14, respectively, at 35$0^{\circ}C$.

Ta and Hf added Ti-l5Sn-4Nb alloys without V and Al elements for biomaterial were melted by arc furnace in response to recent concerns about the long term safety of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. All specimens were homogenized at $1000^{\circ}C$ and solution treatment was performed at $812^{\circ}C$ and aging treatment at $500^{\circ}C$. The microstructure and mechanical properties were analysed by optical micrograph, hardness tester and instron. Ti-l5Sn-4Nb system alloys showed widmanstatten microstructure which is typical microstructure in $\alpha$+$\beta$ type Ti alloys. The Ti-l5Sn-4Nb-2Hf and Ti-l5Sn-4Nb-2Ta alloys showed better hardness and tensile strength compared with Ti-6Al-4V. The result of XPS analysis, Ti-l5Sn-4Nb alloy in air atmosphere consisted of $TiO_2$, SnO and NbO.
