  • The effects of restraint of pressure induced bending(PIB) on crack opening for circumferential through-wall crack in a pipe were investigated. In this study, the elastic and elastic-plastic finite element analyses were performed to evaluate crack opening displacement(COD) for various restraint conditions and crack size. The results showed the restraint of PIB decreased crack opening for a given crack size and tensile stress, and the decrease in crack opening was considerable for large crack and short restraint length. A1so, the effect was more significant in tole results of elastic-plastic analysis compared with in the elastic analysis results. In the elastic-plastic analysis results, tole restraint effect was increased with increasing applied tensile stress corresponding to internal pressure. Additionally, the restraint effect on COD was independent on the variation in pipe diameter and decreased with increasing pipe thickness, and It depended on not total restraint length but shorter restraint length for non-symmetrically restrained.

  • The present paper provides the elastic stress intensity factors (SIFs) and the crack opening displacements (CODs) of a thick-walled pipe with a slanted axial through-wall crack. For estimating these elastic fracture mechanics parameters, systematic three-dimensional elastic finite element (FE) analyses were performed by considering geometric variables, i.e., thickness of pipe, reference crack length, and crack length ratio, affecting the SIFs and CODs. As for loading condition, the internal pressure was considered. Based on the FE results, the SIFs and CODs of slanted axial through-wall cracks in a thickwalled pipe along the crack front and the wall thickness were calculated. In particular, to calculate the SIFs of a thick-walled pipe with a slanted axial through-wall crack from those of a thick-walled pipe with an idealized axial through-wall crack, a slant correction factor representing the effect of the slant crack on the SIFs was proposed.

  • The fatigue crack growth and crack closure behavior of long through-thickness cracks and small half-penny shaped surface cracks were investigated in 5083-H113 Aluminum alloy under constant amplitude testing by the unloading elastic compliance method. It was found that, in the Region II, the crack growth behavior of both through-thickness and surface cracks exhibited the tri-linear form with two transitions and no concern with stress ratio R. In the Region I $I_{ab}$ and I $I_{b}$, through-thickness cracks grew faster than surface cracks in length direction, but at .DELTA. K .leq.4 MPa.root.m for R=0.1 the growth rates of surface cracks in depth direction, grew faster than those of through-thickness cracks. When the crack closure was considered, the growth rates of through-thickness cracks lay between the growth rates of depth direction and the growth rates of length direction in surface cracks. It is suspected that this was caused by the difference of crack closure at depth and length direction of surface cracks.s.

  • The present paper provides the elastic stress intensity factors(SIFs) of thick-walled cylinder with non-idealized circumferential through-wall cracks. For estimating these elastic SIFs, the systematic three-dimensional(3D) elastic finite element(FE) analyses were performed. In order to consider practical shape of thick-walled cylinder and non-idealized circumferential through-wall crack, the values of thickness of cylinder, reference crack length and crack length ratio were systematically varied. As for loading conditions, axial tension, global bending and internal pressure were considered. In particular, in order to calculate the SIFs of thick-walled cylinder with non-idealized circumferential through-wall crack from those of thick-walled cylinder with idealized circumferential through-wall crack, the correction factor representing the effect of non-idealized crack on the SIFs were proposed in this paper. The present results can be applied to accurately evaluate the rupture probabilities of nuclear piping considering actual crack growth behaviors.

  • Based on three-dimensional (3-D) FE limit analyses, this paper estimates effect of internal pressure on plastic limit loads for elbows with circumferential through-wall crack under in-plane bending incorporating large geometry change effects. Circumferential through-wall crack in extrados is considered. The FE limit analyses using the large geometry change option provide plastic collapse loads (using the twice-elastic-slope method). For the bending mode, closing bending is considered. Other relevant variables affecting plastic limit loads are systematically varied, related to pipe bend geometry (the mean radius, thickness and bend curvature) and defect geometry (the length of circumferential through-wall crack).

  • Fatigue crack behavior is studied through the two-level rotary bending test with the deep non-through radial holed notch specimens of low carbon steels(SM22C). The main factors investigated are the effects of the damage zone size around crack tip and phenomena of closing or opening of the crack tip. Obtained results are summarized as follows. Fatigue crack behavior in second level stressing slightly lower than fatigue limit is closely related to the size of damage zone produced by the first level stress higher than fatigue limit and to the phenomena of crack closing and opening for the second level stress. The non-propagating crack limit condition depends upon the crack length l$_{1}$ propagated under the first level stress and the magnitude of second level stress .sigma.$_{2}$ lower than the fatigue limit. The non-propagating crack limit condition is expressed by following eq. $\sigma_2^{6.1}{\times}l_{1}=7.35{\times}10^{6}[(kg_{f}mm^{6.1}(mm)]$

  • An analytical study was conducted to characterize the fatigue crack growth behavior of pre-cracked aluminum plates repaired with asymmetric bonded composite patch. For single-sided repairs, due to the asymmetry and the presence of out-of-plane bending, crack front shape would become skewed curvilinear started from a uniform through-crack profile, as observed from previous studies. In this study, the fatigue analysis of single-sided repairs considering crack front shape development was conducted by implementing three-dimensional successive finite element method coupled with linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) concept, which enables the growing crack front to be directly traced and modeled in a step by step way. Through conducting present analysis technique, crack path of the patched plate as well as the fatigue life was evaluated with sufficient accuracy. The analytical predictions of both the crack front shape evolution and the fatigue life were in good agreement with the experimental observations.

  • The objective of this paper is to examine the detection limit, growth characteristics and notch curvature radius in short crack problem. Measurement techniques such as ultrasonic method and back-face strain compliance method were adopted. The fatigue crack growth rate of the short crack is slower than that of a long crack for a notched specimen. The characteristic of crack growth and crack closure is same as the case of a delay of crack growth caused by constant amplitude load for an ideal crack or single peak overload for a fatigue crack. The short crack is detected effectively by ultrasonic method. A short surface crack occurs in the middle of specimen thickness and is transient to a through crack depth is larger than the notch curvature radius.

  • Crack tip behavior of single mode loading condition(mode I)depend on tensile loading component but one of mixed mode loading condition(mode I+II) have influenced on shear loading component like the practical structure. Because crack closure is caused by shear loading component under mixed-mode loading a research on the behavior in the stage of crack initiation and propagation require to be evaluate about crack closure effect by fatigue crack surface friction. For that reasion we examined the behavior at the crack tip by direct measuring method. Measured behavior at the crack tip was analyzed through vector crack tip displacement. As a result, crack propafation equation was corrected by considering with crack closure effect. In addition we compared fatigue fracture crack surface and crack closure level.

  • In this study, an investigation based on the superposition principle to predict residual stress redistribution caused by crack propagation itself initially through residual tensile stress field was performed by finite element method. The tendency in residual stress redistribution caused by crack propagation recognized both from the analytical results and experimental result was the residual stress concentration consecutively occurred in the vicinity of crack tip even the situation that the crack propagated to the region initially residual compressive stress existed. The software for the analysis is ABAQUS, which is a general purpose finite element package. The analytical method that attempt to take the plastic deformation at the crack tip due to tensile residual stress into the consideration of residual stress redistribution caused by crack propagation was proposed. The plastic zone size at the tip of fatigue crack and redistributed residual stresses were calculated by finite element method on the bases of the concept of Dugdale model. Comparing these analytical results with experimental results, it is verified that the residual stress redistribution caused by crack propagation can be predicted by finite element method with the proposed analytical method.
