  • Due to the internet network congestion, packets may be dropped or delayed at routers. This phenomenon degrades the quality of streaming applications that require high QoS requirements. The proposed algorithm in this paper, called DBRC(Delay-Based Rate Control), tries to cause router queue occupancy to reach a steady state or equilibrium by throttling the transmission rate of the multimedia traffics when network delays tend to increase and also probing for more bandwidth when network delays tend to decrease. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides smooth transmission rate, nearly constant delay and low packet loss rates, compared with TFRC(TCP Friendly Rate Control) that is one of dominant multimedia congestion control algorithms.

  • Typical solid rocket motors have a fixed propellant grain shape and nozzle throat size resulting in a fixed motor thrust. Pintle nozzle has been suggested as a means of providing variable thrust while maintaining the inherent advantage of solid rocket motors. In this study, the pintle shape effect on nozzle performance is investigated using experimental-aided Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). The pintle shape is modified by a principle of monotony. CFD analysis is performed using Fluent by applying the turbulent model. This analysis indicates that nozzle thrust and pintle load are influenced by change of nozzle shock pattern and flow separation due to pintle shape and there exists a high-performing pintle shape.

  • To expand lean misfire limit and improve combustion stability, the effects of port masking were estimated to secure basic data for applying the mechanism to SI engine instead of asymmetrical port and port throttling devises. For this purpose, various shapes and ratios of masking plates were mounted between port and manifold. The masking effects were evaluated by mixture response test under various load and speed conditions. The results showed that lean misfire limits were expended and fast combustion was observed for all masking shapes and ratios, especially, the effect of diagonal 1/4 masking was remarkable. In conclusion, the port masking method could be easily applied to engine without redesign of port for improving part load performance.

  • There is potential method to utilize the liquid carbon dioxide ($LCO_2$) in coal gasification plants. The $LCO_2$ could be used to effectively transport coal particles instead of conventional carrier such as liquid water ($H_2O$) particularly in wet-fed gasifier. However, there is a lack of fundamental study on the atomization behavior of $LCO_2$ coal slurry under high pressure condition. In this study, the flashing spray characteristics of a coal mixture with $LCO_2$ was examined during a throttling process by using a flow visualization system. The spray of coal water slurry which is in the Rayleigh-type break up mode was significantly different. This difference indicates that the coal water slurry did not effectively transport the coal, as compared to $LCO_2$ coal slurry.

  • An experimental investigation of the natural circulating boiling flow characteristic in three cases of annulus with different outer diameter, and the effect of annular gap size on the burnout behavior is presented. The experimental work was conducted for each case of test section at system pressure of $1kg/cm^2$ and inlet subcooling $0-20^{\circ}C$ in the full range of throttling ratio. As the result, the following facts were found. 1) With the increase of ${\Delta}T_{sub}$, $D_{2}$ and A/A_{o}$, $q_{BO}$ increases on the whole, and with the decrease of ${\Delta}T_{sub}$ and $D_{2}$, hydrodynamic instability is accelerated to happen prematually. 2)With the increase of ${\Delta}T_{sub}$, $D_{2}$ and A/A_{o}$ burnout characteristic shows the high velocitylow quality burnout, and with the decrease, low-velocity-high quality burnout. 3)With the decrease of A/A_{o}$, hyddrodynamic instability is singnificantly restrained and the difference of $q_{BO}$ in each $D_2$ under same condition is gradually reduced, finally converging into $1.9{\times}10^{5}kcal/m^{2}-hr$.

  • As the interest in lunar exploration increases, a throttleable engine is regarded as a important technology. Variable area injectors have been identified to be the most reliable throttling method. Pintle injector is a representative injector of the variable method. It has a simple design and inherent combustion stability. Therefore, it is necessary to research the pintle injector. The present study investigates the concept of the injector, the design factors, and the latest development trends for pintle injector design.

  • A dynamic model to simulate LNG reliquefaction process has been developed. The model was applied to two candidate cycles for LNG reliquefaction process, which are Reverse Brayton and Claude cycles. The simulation was intended to simulate the pilot plant under construction for operation of the two cycles and evaluate their feasibility. According to the simulation results, both satisfy control requirements for safe operation of brazed aluminum plate-fin type heat exchangers. In view of energy consumption, the Reverse Brayton cycle is more efficient than the Claude cycle. The latter has an expansion valve in addition to the common facilities sharing with the Reverse Brayton cycle. The expansion valve is a main cause to the efficiency loss. It generates a significant amount of entropy associated with its throttling and increases circulation flow rates of the refrigerant and power consumption caused by its leaking resulting in lowered pressure ratio. It is concluded that the Reverse Brayton cycle is more efficient and simpler in control and construction than the Claude cycle.

  • A hybrid rocket engine capable of thrust throttling and underwater-working was developed for the underwater high-speed vehicle propulsion system. The hybrid rocket engine was designed and made by two types of ground test motor and underwater working motors. An engine performance was verified by the ground tests with the ground test motor and in the case of underwater motors the ground tests and underwater tests were performed. For the underwater operation a two-stage ignition system was adopted and a rupture disc was installed at the end of nozzle for a water-tight just before an ignition. Successful ignition and propulsion were confirmed in the underwater test with the final selected double rupture disc.

  • A simple model to analyze non-linear density-wave instability in a sodium-cooled helically coiled steam generator is developed. The model is formulated with three regions with moving boundaries. The homogeneous equilibrium flow model is used for the two-phase region and the shell-side energy conservation is also considered for the heat flux variation in each region. The proposed model is applied to the analysis of two-phase instability in a JAEA (Japan Atomic Energy Agency) 50MWt No.2 steam generator. The steady state results show that the proposed model accurately predicts the six cases of operating temperatures on the primary and secondary sides. The sizes of three regions, the secondary side pressure drop according to the flow rate, and the temperature variation in the vertical direction are also predicted well. The temporal variations of the inlet flow rate according to the throttling coefficient, the boiling and superheating boundaries and the pressure drop in the two-phase and superheating regions are obtained from the unsteady analysis.

  • A case history is presented pertaining to high frequency piping vibration and noise caused by globe valve in the spent fuel pool cooling system of nuclear power plant. Frequency analyses were performed on the system to diagnose the problem and develop a solution to reduce the piping vibration and noise. The source of the high frequency and noise energy was traced to the globe valve located immediately downstream of the centrifugal pump by performing valve throttling test. Measurements of vibration and noise are presented to show that the high frequency vibration and noise amplitude was dependent upon the valve disc position and flow rate. Strouhal vortex shedding frequencies were generated at the exit of the globe valve which exited structural resonance of valve disc and amplified the high frequency vibration and noise. The problem was identified as an interaction between the flow inside globe valve and the valve disc structure. Attempts to reduce the vibration and noise amplitudes of the piping system were successfully achieved by the modification of guide-disc diameter and disc-edge figure The valve disc was replaced by an alternative to eliminate the source of the harmful high frequency vibration and noise.
