  • This paper deals with the characteristics of soil ionization affecting the dynamic performance of grounding systems under lightning impulse voltage. A concentric hemispherical electrode system was employed in order to facilitate the field calculation and analysis of the experimental results. The parameters such as the ionization threshold and breakdown field intensity, the pre-ionization and the post ionization resistances, the time-lag to ionization, the transient impedance, the equivalent ionized radius for various soil media were measured and analyzed. The dynamic characteristics of ionization processes under lightning impulse voltage are strongly dependent on the types of soil and water content. As a result, a soil ionization reduces the ground resistance and there is a little effect of applied impulse polarity on the soil ionization threshold field intensity. Although the ionization threshold field intensity of wet clay with 30% water content is the highest, its ionized zone was found to be the smallest amongst the test samples.

  • We applied the two-color resonant two-photon ionization and mass-analyzed threshold ionization techniques to record the vibronic and cation spectra of 2,4-difluorophenol. As supported by our theoretical calculations, only the cis form of 2,4-difluorophenol involves in the two-photon photoexcitation and pulsed field ionization processes. The band origin of the $S_1{\leftarrow}S_0$ electronic transition of cis-2,4-difluorophenol appears at 35 647 ${\pm}2cm^{-1}$ and the adiabatic ionization energy is determined to be 70 $030{\pm}5cm^{-1}$, respectively. Most of the observed active vibrations in the electronically excited $S_1$ and cationic ground $D_0$ states mainly involve in-plane ring deformation vibrations. Comparing these data of cis-2,4-difluorophenol with those of phenol, cis-2-fluorophenol, and 4-fluorophenol, we found that there is an additivity rule associated with the energy shift resulting from the additional fluorine substitution.

  • Mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectra of 2-hydroxypyridines existing as lactims (2-pyridinol) in a molecular beam are obtained via (1+1') two-photon process to give accurate ionization energies of 8.9344${\pm}$0.0005 and 8.9284${\pm}$0.0005 eV for 2-pyridinol (2Py-OH) and its deuterated analogue (2Py-OD), respectively. Resonantly-enhanced two-photon ionization spectra of these compounds are also presented to give vibrational structures of their $S_1$ states. Vibrational frequencies of 2Py-OH and 2Py-OD in ionic ground states are accurately determined from MATI spectra taken via various $S_1$ intermediate states, and associated vibrational modes are assigned with the aid of ab initio calculations.

  • Mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) technique is optimized to generate substantial amount of state-selected molecular ions sufficient for dynamics study. The main strategy is to stabilize intermediate (n = 100- 200) Rydberg states by l,m-mix ing induced by AC field. Electrical jitter inherent in high voltage switching is utilized for this purpose. A related technique to locate the MATI onset is also described.

  • Hot electron simulation of silicon using Monte Carlo method was carried out to investigate impact ionization characteristics near the drain of MOSFET's at 77 and 300K. We successfully characterized drift velocity and impact ionization at 77 and 300K employing a simplified energy band structure and phonon scattering mechanisms. Woods' soft energy threshold model was introduced to the Monte Carlo simulation of impact ionization, and good agreement with reported experimental results was resulted by employing threshold energy of 1.7 eV. It is suggested that the choice of the critical angle between specular reflection and diffusive scattering of surface roughness scattering may be important in determining the impact ionization charateristics of Monte Carlo simulation near the drain of MOSFET's.

  • Based on the semiclassical theory of chaotic scattering, Tanner et al. [J. Phys. B 40, F157 (2007)] proposed the fluctuation in the partial photoionization cross section of helium below the double-ionization threshold would show the same characteristics as in the total cross section, predicting that the Fourier spectrum of the fluctuation reveals peaks at the classical actions of closed triple collision orbits and the amplitude of the fluctuation decreases algebraically as the energy approaches the double-ionization threshold. In that paper, however, the predictions were not clearly confirmed due to the lack of experimental data with sufficient accuracy. So instead, we calculate the partial photoionization cross sections of collinear eZe helium for the energy range from the single-ionization threshold $I_{20}$ to $I_{32}$ in order to numerically confirm the predictions. Analysis of the fluctuation in the partial cross section shows that the predictions are indeed valid. Our findings mean that the fluctuation in the partial photoionization cross section can be described by classical triple collision orbits in the semiclassical limit. Thus it explains in a natural way the mirroring and mimicking structures observed in cross section signals for different ionization channels.

  • The present article reports extensive numerical results on the non-local characteristics of ultra-short pulsed laser-induced breakdowns of fused silica ($SiO_{2}$) by using the multivariate Fokker-Planck equation. The nonlocal type of multivariate Fokker-Planck equation is modeled on the basis of the Boltzmann transport formalism to describe the ultra-short pulsed laser-induced damage phenomena in the energy-position space, together with avalanche ionization, three-body recombination, and multiphoton ionization. Effects of electron avalanche, recombination, and multiphoton ionization on the electronic transport are examined. From the results, it is observed that the recombination becomes prominent and contributes to reduce substantially the rate of increase in electron number density when the electron density exceeds a certain threshold. With very intense laser irradiation, a strong absorption of laser energy takes place and an initially transparent solid is converted to a metallic state, well known as laser-induced breakdown. It is also found that full ionization is provided at intensities above threshold, all further laser energy is deposited within a thin skin depth.

  • The exact model of impact ionization events in which has influence on device efficiency, is to be necessary element for device simulation. Recently, a modified Keldysh formula with two set of power exponent of 7.8 and 5.6 is used to simulate carrier transport. This model is, however, not suitable as impact ionization model in low energy range since this ignore direction dependent properties of impact ionization. The impact ionization rate is highly anisotropic at low energy, while it becomes isotropic at higher energy range. Note that impact ionization events frequently occur in high energy range. For calculating impart ionization rate, we use full energy band structure derived from Fermi's golden rule and empirical pseudopotential method. We compare with calculated and experimental value, and investigate direction dependent conduction energy band structure along the direction of <100>, <110> and <111>. We know that the threshold energy of impact ionization is anisotropic and impact ionization rate is very deviated from modified Keldish formula, in relatively low energy range.
