This study assesses the wear process of particle impingement erosion which is a major source of erosion among fluid power components. First, Bitter's theory was modified to simplify engineering calculations. Second, actual experiments were conducted to validate the modified equation. And the effect of concentration and size distribution of impinging particles was tested. Little deviation from the prediction of the modified equation was observed. To develop an analytical approach to the erosion mechanism, further experimental data are required to establish a correlation with other engineering parameters.
Sloshing of the fluid having a free surface produces an impact force on a tank wall subjected to external excitation. This paper investigates the effect of cylindrical structures in a rectangular sloshing tank under translational harmonic excitations. By varying the number of installed cylinders in the tank, the characteristics of the free-surface deformation is experimentally observed, and the peak pressure on the tank wall is extracted by threshold values. To predict the peak pressure, the numerical simulation is also conducted using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), and the peak values are compared with the experimental results. Furthermore, pressure and velocity fields in the tank and free-surface shape are analyzed at the moment of impact.
Damage characteristics of granite, marble and sandstone whose properties were different were investigated by uniaxial compression test and cyclic loading-unloading test. Strength, elastic constants and damage threshold stresses were measured by uniaxial compression test and were compared with those measured by cyclic loading-unloading test. Average rock strengths measured by cyclic loading-unloading test were either lower than or similar with those measured by uniaxial compression test. Rocks with high strength and low porosity were more sensitive to fatigue than that with low strength and high porosity. Although permanent strains caused by cyclic loading-unloading were different according to rock types, they could be good indicators representing damage characteristics of rock. Damage threshold stress of granite and marble might be measured from stress-permanent strain curves. Acoustic emissions were measured during both tests and felicity ratios which represented damage characteristics of rocks were calculated. Felicity ratio of sandstone which was weak in strength and highly porous could not be calculated because of very few measurements of acoustic emissions. On the other hand, damage threshold could be predicted from felicity ratios of granite and marble which were brittle and low in porosity. The deformation behaviors and damage characteristics of rock mass could be investigated if additional tests for various rock types were performed.

In this paper, a new type of written image segmentation based on relative comparison of region areas is proposed. The original image is composed of two distinctive regions; information and background. Compared with this binary original image, the observed one is the gray scale which is represented with complex regions with speckles and noise due to degradation or contamination. For applying threshold or statistical approach, there occurs the region-deformation problem in the process of binarization. At first step, the efficient iterated conditional mode (ICM) which takes the lozenge type block is used for regions formation into the binary image. Secondly the information region is estimated through selecting action and restored its primary state. Not only decision of the attachment to a region but also the calculation of the magnitude of its area are carried on at each current pixel iteratively. All region areas are sorted into a set and selected through the decision parameter which is obtained statistically. Our experiments show that these approaches are effective on ink-rubbed copy image (拓本 'Takbon') and efficient at shape restoration. Experiments on gray scale image show promising shape extraction results, comparing with the threshold-segmentation and conventional ICM method.

Flexible complementary inverters based on thin-film transistors (TFTs) are important because they have low power consumption and high voltage gain compared to single type circuits. We have manufactured flexible complementary inverters using pentacene and amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) for the p-channel and n-channel, respectively. The circuits were fabricated on polyimide (PI) substrate. Firstly, a thin poly-4-vinyl phenol (PVP) layer was spin coated on PI substrate to make a smooth surface with rms surface roughness of 0.3 nm, which was required to grow high quality IGZO layers. Then, Ni gate electrode was deposited on the PVP layer by e-beam evaporator. 400-nm-thick PVP and 20-nm-thick ALD Al2O3 dielectric was deposited in sequence as a double gate dielectric layer for high flexibility and low leakage current. Then, IGZO and pentacene semiconductor layers were deposited by rf sputter and thermal evaporator, respectively, using shadow masks. Finally, Al and Au source/drain electrodes of 70 nm were respectively deposited on each semiconductor layer using shadow masks by thermal evaporator. The characteristics of TFTs and inverters were evaluated at different bending radii. The applied strain led to change in voltage transfer characteristics of complementary inverters as well as source-drain saturation current, field effect mobility and threshold voltage of TFTs. The switching threshold voltage of fabricated inverters was decreased with increasing bending radius, which is related to change in parameters of TFTs. Throughout the bending experiments, relationship between circuit performance and TFT characteristics under mechanical deformation could be elucidated.
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) exhibit superelasticity given the ambient temperature is above the austenite finish temperature threshold, the magnitude of which significantly depends on the metal ingredients though. For the monocrystalline CuAlBe SMAs, their superelasticity was found being maintained even when the ambient temperature is down to $-40^{\circ}C$. Thus this makes such SMAs particularly favorable for outdoor seismic applications, such as the framed structures located in cold regions with substantial temperature oscillation. Due to the thermo-mechanical coupling mechanism, the hysteretic properties of SMAs vary with temperature change, primarily including altered material strength and different damping. Thus, this study adopted the monocrystalline CuAlBe SMAs as the kernel component of the SMA braces. To quantify the seismic response characteristics at various temperatures, a wide temperature range from -40 to $40^{\circ}C$ are considered. The middle temperature, $0^{\circ}C$, is artificially selected to be the reference temperature in the performance comparisons, as well the corresponding material properties are used in the seismic design procedure. Both single-degree-of-freedom systems and a six-story braced frame were numerically analyzed by subjecting them to a suite of earthquake ground motions corresponding to the design basis hazard level. To the frame structures, the analytical results show that temperature variation generates minor influence on deformation and energy demands, whereas low temperatures help to reduce acceleration demands. Further, attributed to the excellent superelasticity of the monocrystalline CuAlBe SMAs, the frames successfully maintain recentering capability without leaving residual deformation upon considered earthquakes, even when the temperature is down to $-40^{\circ}C$.

One of the critical issues for applications of flexible organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) for flexible electronic systems is the electrical stabilities of the OTFT devices, including variation of the current on/off ratio ($I_{on}/I_{off}$), leakage current, threshold voltage, and hysteresis, under repetitive mechanical deformation. In particular, repetitive mechanical deformation accelerates the degradation of device performance at the ambient environment. In this work, electrical stabilities of the pentacene organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) employing multi-stack hybrid encapsulation layers were investigated under mechanical cyclic bending. Flexible bottom-gated pentacene-based OTFTs fabricated on flexible polyimide substrate with poly-4-vinyl phenol (PVP) dielectric as a gate dielectric were encapsulated by the plasma-deposited organic layer and atomic layer deposited inorganic layer. For cyclic bending experiment of flexible OTFTs, the devices were cyclically bent up to $10^5$ times with 5mm bending radius. In the most of the devices after $10^5$ times of bending cycles, the off-current of the OTFT with no encapsulation layers was quickly increased due to increases in the conductivity of the pentacene caused by doping effects from $O_2$ and $H_2O$ in the atmosphere, which leads to decrease in the $I_{on}/I_{off}$ and increase in the hysteresis. With encapsulation layers, however, the electrical stabilities of the OTFTs were improved significantly. In particular, the OTFTs with multi-stack hybrid encapsulation layer showed the best electrical stabilities up to the bending cycles of $10^5$ times compared to the devices with single organic encapsulation layer. Changes in electrical properties of cyclically bent OTFTs with encapsulation layers will be discussed in detail.
Type I, II, III are regarded as "true" joint receptors, type IV is considered a class of pain receptor. Type I, II and III mechanoreceptors, via static and dynamic input, signal joint position, intraarticular pressure changes, and the direction, amplitude, and velocity of joint movements. Type I mechanoreceptor subserve both static and dynamic physiologic functions. Type I are found primarily in the stratum fibrosum of the joint capsule and ligaments. Type I receptors have a low threshold for activation and are allow to adapt to changes altering their firing frequency. Type II receptors have a low threshold for activation. These dynamic receptors respond to joint movement. Type II receptors are thus termed rapidly adapting. Type II joint receptors are located at the junction of the synovial membrane and fibrosum of the joint capsule and intraarticular and extraarticular fat pads. Type III receptors have been found in collateral ligaments of the joints of the extremities. Morphologically similar to Golgi tendon organ. These dynamic receptors have a high threshold to stimulation and are slowly adating. Type IV receptors possess free nerve ending that have been found in joint capsule and fat pads. They are not normally active, but respond to extreme mechanical deformation of the joint as well as to direct chemical or mechanical irritation. Small amplitude oscillatory and distraction movements(joint mobilization) techniques are used to stimulate the mechanoreceptors that may inhibit the transmission of nociceptors stimuli at the spinal cord or brain stem levels.

The selection of subset size is of great importance to the accuracy of digital image correlation (DIC). In the traditional DIC, a constant subset size is used for computing the entire image, which overlooks the differences among local speckle patterns of the image. Besides, it is very laborious to find the optimal global subset size of a speckle image. In this paper, a self-adaptive and bidirectional dynamic subset selection (SBDSS) algorithm is proposed to make the subset sizes vary according to their local speckle patterns, which ensures that every subset size is suitable and optimal. The sum of subset intensity variation (${\eta}$) is defined as the assessment criterion to quantify the subset information. Both the threshold and initial guess of subset size in the SBDSS algorithm are self-adaptive to different images. To analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm, both numerical and laboratory experiments were performed. In the numerical experiments, images with different speckle distribution, different deformation and noise were calculated by both the traditional DIC and the proposed algorithm. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves higher accuracy than the traditional DIC. Laboratory experiments performed on a substrate also demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is effective in selecting appropriate subset size for each point.
