The flight vehicles have cavities such as wheel wells and bomb bays. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves. Resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. In the present study, numerical analysis was performed for cavity flows by the unsteady compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with Wilcox's ${\kappa}\;-\;{\omega}$ turbulence model. The cavity has the aspect ratios of 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 for two-dimensional case, same aspect ratios with the W/D ratio of 2 for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 0.53 and 1,600,000 respectively. The flow field is observed to oscillate in the "shear layer mode" with a feedback mechanism. Based on the SPL(Sound Pressure Level) analysis of the pressure variation at the cavity trailing edge, the dominant frequency was analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formula. The MPI(Message Passing Interface) parallelized code was used for calculations by PC-cluster.
A numerical study is carried out to analyze the steady three-dimensional turbulent flow and convective heat transfer in a staggered pin-fin array with diamond shaped elements at various geometrical configurations. Steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation are solved using a finite volume based solver. Shear stress transport (SST) model is used as turbulence closure. The computational domain is composed of one pitch of pin-fin displacement with periodic boundary conditions on the surfaces normal to the streamwise direction and the cross-streamwise direction. The numerical results for Nusselt number and friction factor are validated with experimental results. The effects of pin angle, pin height and pitch on Nusselt number, friction factor and efficiency index are investigated.

In the present work, shape of the mixing vane in Plus7 fuel assembly has been optimized numerically using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer. Standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model is used as a turbulence closure. The Response surface method is employed as an optimization technique. The objective function is defined as a combination of heat transfer rate and inverse of friction loss. Bend angle and base length of mixing vane are selected as design variables. Thermal-hydraulic performances for different shapes of mixing vane have been discussed, and optimum shape has been obtained as a function of weighting factor in the objective function.
An iterative time marching procedure for solving incompressible internal flow has been applied to the flow around a rotor-stator. This procedure solves three-dimensional incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation on a moving, time-deforming, non-orthogonal body-fitted grid using second-order accurate schemes for the time derivatives and third/second-order accurate schemes for the spatial derivatives. To handle rotationg geometry, the multiblock technique is applied and the overall flow domain is subdivided into two blocks. In each block, a grid is generated and flowfield is solved independently of the other blocks. The boundary data for each block is provided by the neighboring blocks using bilinear interpolation technique.
In the present work, characteristics of the flow in the cage of a steam turbine bypass control valve for thermal power plant are investigated. Experimental measurement for wall static pressure has been carried out to validate numerical solutions. And, the flowfield is analyzed by solving steady three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Shear stress transport (SST) model is used as turbulence closure. The effects of the flow area between stages of the cage on the pressure drop are also found.

Even though the relative importance of length scale of flow system allow us to simplify three dimensional flow problem to one or two dimensional representation, many systems still require three dimensional analysis. The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and accurate finite element model for analyzing and predicting three dimensional flow features in natural rivers and to offend to model spreading of pollutants and transport of sediments in the future. Firstly, three dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the hydrostatic pressure assumption in generalized curvilinear coordinates were combined with the kinematic free-surface condition. Secondly. to simulate realistic high Reynolds number flow, the model employed the Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin(SU/PG) scheme as a weighting function for the finite element method in conjunction with an appropriate turbulence model(Smagorinsky scheme for the horizontal plain and Mellor-Yamada scheme for the vertical direction). Several tests is performed for the purpose of validation and verification of the developed model. A simple rectangular channel, 5-shaped and U-shaped channel are used for tests and comparisons are made with RMA-10 model. Runs for each case is converged stably without a oscillation and calculated water-surface deformation, longitudinal and transversal velocities, and velocity vector fields are in good agreement with the results of RMA-10 model.

Exergetic analysis was introduced in optimization of a rotating equilateral triangular internal cooling channel with staggered square ribs to maximize the net exergy gain. The objective function was defined as the net exergy gain considering the exergy gain by heat transfer and exergy losses by friction and heat transfer process. The flow field and heat transfer in the channel were analysed using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations under the uniform temperature condition. Shear stress transport turbulence model has been selected as a turbulence closure through the turbulence model test. Computational results for the area-averaged Nusselt number were validated compared to the experimental data. Three design variables, i.e., the angle of rib, the rib pitch-to-hydraulic diameter ratio and the rib width-to-hydraulic diameter ratio, were selected for the optimization. The optimization was performed at Reynolds number, 20,000. Twenty-two design points were selected by Latin hypercube sampling, and the values of the objective function were evaluated by the RANS analysis at these points. Through optimization, the objective function value was improved by 22.6% compared to that of the reference geometry. Effects of the Reynolds number, rotation number, and buoyancy parameter on the heat transfer performance of the optimum design were also discussed.

A numerical study to investigate the effect of intake vortex occurrence on the performance of an axial hydraulic turbine for generating tidal power energy in Sihwa-lake tidal power plant, Korea, is performed. Numerical analysis of the flow through an sxial hydraulic turbine is carried out by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes dquations with the shear stress transport turbulence model. In the real turbine operation, the vortex flows are occurred in both the side corners around the intake of an axial hydraulic turbine due to the interaction between the inflow angle of water and intake structure. To analyze these vortex phenomena and to evaluate their impacts on the turbine performance, the internal flow fields of the axial hydraulic turbines with the different inflow angles are compared with their performances. As the results of numerical analysis, the vortex flows do not directly affect the turbine performance.

The paper presents the numerical analysis of wave run-up over rubble-mound breakwaters covered by antifer units using a technique integrating Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. Direct application of Navier-Stokes equations within armour blocks, is used to provide a more reliable approach to simulate wave run-up over breakwaters. A well-tested Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) Volume of Fluid (VOF) code (Flow-3D) was adopted for CFD computations. The computed results were compared with experimental data to check the validity of the model. Numerical results showed that the direct three dimensional (3D) simulation method can deliver accurate results for wave run-up over rubble mound breakwaters. The results showed that the placement pattern of antifer units had a great impact on values of wave run-up so that by changing the placement pattern from regular to double pyramid can reduce the wave run-up by approximately 30%. Analysis was done to investigate the influences of surface roughness, energy dissipation in the pores of the armour layer and reduced wave run-up due to inflow into the armour and stone layer.
High-speed flight vehicle have various cavities. The supersonic cavity flow is complicated due to vortices, flow separation and reattachment, shock and expansion waves. The general cavity flow phenomena include the formation and dissipation of vortices, which induce oscillation and noise. The oscillation and noise greatly affect flow control, chemical reaction, and heat transfer processes. The supersonic cavity' flow with high Reynolds number is characterized by the pressure oscillation due to turbulent shear layer, cavity geometry, and resonance phenomenon based on external flow conditions, The resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. In the present study, we performed numerical analysis of cavities by applying the unsteady, compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations with the ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The cavity model used for numerical calculation had a depth(D) of 15mm cavity aspect ratio(L/D) of 3, width to spanwise ratio(W/D) of 1.0 to 5.0. Based on the PSD(Power Spectral Density) and CSD(Cross Spectral Density) analysis of the pressure variation, the dominant frequency was analyized and compared with the results of Rossiter's Eq.
