  • A wide range of techniques for the direct-printing of functional materials have been developed for the fabrication of micro- and nanoscale structures and devices. Here we report a new direct patterning method, liquid bridge-mediated nanotransfer molding (LB-nTM), for the formation of two- or three-dimensional structures with feature sized as small as tens of nanometers over large areas up to 4". LB-nTM is based on the direct transfer of various materials from a mold to a substrate via a liquid bridge between them. The LB-nTM method was applied to the preparation of organic nanowire FETs on flexible substrates.

  • Ink jet printheads are now widely used in manufacturing processes that require precise dispensing of materials. Today, Dimatix manufactures a variety of drop-on-demand ink jet printheads for the industrial printing market, but emerging opportunities present fresh challenges to our technology. In response to requirements for digitally printing on flexible substrates and dispensing novel electronic fluids, we are developing next generation jetting technology based on our three-dimensional silicon MEMS technology with a piezo-driven pumping chamber integrated into the chip structure. This presentation will address the functional and physical design features and properties of Dimatix's MEMS process, its characteristics, reliability and usability. Examples of opportunities and applications for digitally printing electronic fluids on flexible substrates with MEMS-based ink jet technology will be presented.

  • The fabrication of complex-shaped parts out of Co-Cr-Mo alloy and 316L stainless steel by three-dimensional printing (3DP) was studied using two grades of each alloy with average particle size of 20 and $75\;{\mu}m$, respectively. To produce sound specimens, the proper 3DP processing parameters were determined. The sintering behavior of the powders was characterized by dilatometric analysis and by batch sintering in argon atmosphere at $1280^{\circ}$ for 2h. The 3DP process has successfully produced complex-shaped biomedical parts with total porosity of 12-25% and homogenous pore structure, which could be suitable for tissue growth into the pores.

  • We report a new patterning technique of inorganic materials by using thin-film transfer printing (TFTP) with atomic layer deposition. This method consists of the atomic layer deposition (ALD) of inorganic thin film and a nanotransfer printing (nTP) that is based on a water-mediated transfer process. In the TFTP method, the Al2O3 ALD growth occurs on FTS-coated PDMS stamp without specific chemical species, such as hydroxyl group. The CF3-terminated alkylsiloxane monolayer, which is coated on PDMS stamp, provides a weak adhesion between the deposited Al2O3 and stamp, and promotes the easy and complete release of Al2O3 film from the stamp. And also, the water layer serves as an adhesion layer to provide good conformal contact and form strong covalent bonding between the Al2O3 layer and Si substrate. Thus, the TFTP technique is potentially useful for making nanochannels of various inorganic materials.

  • We fabricate poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiopene patterns using liquid-bridge-mediated nanotransfer (LB-nTM) printing via vapor phase polymerization (VPP). LB-nTM printing method can simultaneously enable the synthesis, alignment and patterning of the nanowires from molecular ink solutions. Two- or three-dimensional complex structures of VPP-PEDOT were directly fabricated over a large area using many types of molecular inks. VPP method is a versatile technique that can be used to obtain highly conducting coatings of conjugated polymer on both conducting and non-conducting substrates. The PEDOT patterns has analyzed crystallinity from X-ray diffraction pattern and select-area diffraction patterns. In addition, the PEDOT pattern has high conductivity compared other conducting polymers.

  • This study focuses on improving the 3D printability of pea protein with the help of food inks designed for jet-type 3D printers. Initially, the food ink base was formulated using nanocellulose-alginate with a gradient of native potato starch and its 3D printability was evaluated. The 3D-printed structures using only candidates for the food ink base formulated with or without potato starch exhibited dimensional accuracy exceeding 95% on both the X and Y axes. However, the accuracy of stacking on the Z-axis was significantly affected by the ink composition. Food ink with 1% potato starch closely matched the CAD design, with an accuracy of approximately 99% on the Z-axis. Potato starch enhanced the stacking of 3D-printed structures by improving the electrostatic repulsion, viscoelasticity, and thixotropic behavior of the food ink base. The 3D printability of pea protein was evaluated using the selected food ink base, showing a 46% improvement in dimensional accuracy on the Z-axis compared to the control group printed with a food ink base lacking potato starch. These findings suggest that starch can serve as an additive support for high-resolution 3D jet-type printing of food ink material.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the marginal and internal fit of metal coping fabricated by a metal three-dimensional (3D) printer that uses selective laser melting (SLM). Methods: An extraoral scanner was used to scan a die of the prepared maxillary right first molar, and the coping was designed using computer-aided design software and saved as an stereo lithography (STL) file. Ten specimens were printed with an SLM-type metal 3D printer (SLM group), and 10 more specimens were fabricated by casting the castable patterns output generated by a digital light processing-type resin 3D printer (casting the 3D printed resin patterns [CRP] group). The fit was measured using the silicon replica technique, and 8 points (A to H) were set per specimen to measure the marginal (points A, H) and internal (points B~G) gaps. The differences among the groups were compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test (α=0.05). Results: The mean of marginal fit in the SLM group was 69.67±18.04 ㎛, while in the CRP group was 117.10±41.95 ㎛. The internal fit of the SLM group was 95.18±41.20 ㎛, and that of the CRP group was 86.35±32 ㎛. As a result of statistical analysis, there was a significant difference in marginal fit between the SLM and CRP groups (p<0.05); however, there was no significant difference in internal fit between the SLM group and the CRP group (p>0.05). Conclusion: The marginal and internal fit of SLM is within the clinically acceptable range, and it seems to be applicable in terms of fit.

  • Quality control (QC) of Computed Tomography (CT) devices is based on image quality measurement on AAPM CT phantom which is a standard phantom. Although it is possible to control the accuracy of the CT apparatus, it is expensive and has a disadvantage of low penetration rate. Therefore, in this study, we make image quality measurement phantom at low cost using FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) type three-dimensional printer and try to analyze the usefulness, compare it with existing standard phantom. To print a phantom, We used three-dimensional printer of the FFF system and PLA (Poly Lactic Acid, density: $1.24g/cm^3$) filament, and the CT device of 64 MDCT (Aquilion CX, Toshiba, Japan). In addition, we printed a phantom using three-dimensional printer after design using various tool based on existing standard phantom. For image quality evaluation, AAPM CT phantom and self-generated phantom were measured 10 times for each block. The measured data were analyzed for significance using the Mannwhiteney U-test of SPSS (Version 22.0, SPSS, Chicago, IL, USA). As a result of the analysis, phantom fabricated with three-dimensional printer and standard phantom showed no significant difference (p>0.05). Furthermore, we confirmed that image quality measurement performance of a phantom using three-dimensional printer is similar to the existing standard phantom. In conclusion, we confirmed the possibility of low cost phantom fabrication using three dimensional printer.

  • Objective : Three-dimensional (3D) printing in vascular surgery is trending and is useful for the visualisation of intracranial aneurysms for both surgeons and trainees. The 3D models give the surgeon time to practice before hand and plan the surgery accordingly. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of preoperative planning with 3D printing models of aneurysms in terms of surgical time and patient outcomes. Methods : Forty patients were prospectively enrolled in this study and divided into two groups : groups I and II. In group I, only the angiograms were studied before surgery. Solid 3D modelling was performed only for group II before the operation and was studied accordingly. All surgeries were performed by the same senior vascular neurosurgeon. Demographic data, surgical data, both preoperative and postoperative modified Rankin scale (mRS) scores, and Glasgow outcome scores (GOS) were evaluated. Results : The average time of surgery was shorter in group II, and the difference was statistically significant between the two groups (p<0.001). However, no major differences were found for the GOS, hospitalisation time, or mRS. Conclusion : This study is the first prospective study of the utility of 3D aneurysm models. We show that 3D models are useful in surgery preparation. In the near future, these models will be used widely to educate trainees and pre-plan surgical options for senior surgeons.
