The moisture absorption behavior of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and its effect on dimensional stability were examined. Moisture diffusivity in CFRP was determined by measuring a specimen's weight during the moisture absorption test. Three types of CFRP specimens were prepared: a unidirectionally reinforced laminate, a quasi-isotropic laminate and woven fabric. Each CFRP was processed into two geometries - a thin plate for determination of diffusivity and a rod with a square cross-section for the discussion of two-dimensional diffusion behavior. By solving Fick's law expanded to 3 dimensions, the diffusivities in the three orthogonal directions were obtained and analyzed in terms of the anisotropy of CFRP moisture diffusion. Coefficients of moisture expansion (CMEs) were also obtained from specimen deformation caused by moisture absorption. During moisture absorption, the specimen surfaces showed larger deformation near the edges due to the distribution of moisture contents. This deformation was reasonably predicted by the finite element analysis using experimentally determined diffusivities and CMEs. For unidirectional CFRP, the effect of the fiber alignment on CME was analyzed by micromechanical finite element analysis (FEA) and discussed.

Although double-stage hanger is used in many homes for its space utilization and ease of installation, it is inconvenient for users to take off clothes hung on the upper bar due to its high height. Therefore, this paper proposes a new type of double-stage hanger that allows users to easily hang or take out clothes hung on the upper bar while maintaining the function of the existing double-stage hanger. 4-bar link mechanism is applied so that the upper bar can come down to a convenient height with one operation. In addition, an appropriate link shape, length, and joint type are selected so that the height is adjusted three-dimensionally to prevent overlapping of clothes hanging on upper/lower bars. FEA analysis is performed to ensure that the presented hanger shape can support the load of clothes during height adjustment and the feasibility of the three-dimensional height adjustment hanger is verified through fabrication.

When blocks are supported on a dock, huge reaction forces concentrated at the supports cause structural damage owing to local stress concentrations. Thus, the supports should be arranged to avoid local failure from the reaction forces by redistributing those forces. Docking analyses to determine the proper blocks and their support arrangements are introduced so that the local stresses are minimized to warrant the safety of the docking supports. Local stresses enforced by the support arrangement should be evaluated by finite element analysis (FEA). However, it is difficult to consider an accurate 3D geometry of the blocks in the finite element model because the structural design information is too complicated to determine within several days using the FEA model. This paper presents a simplified FE model to evaluate the safety of the arrangement of supports using a simplified grillage element. The grillage element can be efficiently used to obrain the reaction forces in docking analysis becasuse the reaction forces at the supports are enough to assess the safety of block. Since a simplified grillage model of the entire ship cannot accurately calculate the local stresses, an optimized modeling method based on the grillage element was introduced. The local reaction forces obtained by the proposed approach and three-dimensional FEA were discussed for typical types of ships. It is shown that the reaction forces obtained by the present grillage model are in reasonably good agreement with the FEA model.
Purpose : Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone microarchitecture are important determinants for bone strength. Recently micro-CT have provided possibilities for measuring a variety of structural indices to characterize bone microarchitecture. The objective of this study was to compare the BMD and micro-CT parameters with Young's modulus calculated by finite element analysis (FEA) for the evaluation of bone strength. Materials and Methods Bone specimens were obtained from the 18 female rabbits aged 16 weeks. Of those, 36 samples (right and left femur) were selected for 3D micro-CT analysis $(ANT^{TM},\;SKYSCAN,\;Belgium)$ and BMD by PIXlmus 2 (GE Lunar Co. USA). Five microstructural parameters of micro-CT, such as trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), bone specific surface (BS/BV), percent bone volume (BV/TV), structure model index (SMI) and degree of anisotropy (DOA) were studied. Young's modulus was obtained by software program (ANSYS 9.0, ANSYS Inc, Canonsburg, PA) based on micro-CT three dimensional images. Results : Young's modulus assessed by FEA correlated significantly with Tb.Th, BV/TV, BS/BV and SMI respectively. Young's modulus showed higher correlation with these rnicrostructural parameters of micro-CT than BMD. Microstructural parameters except DOA showed significant correlations within the examined group. Conclusion The microarchitectural parameters o( micro-CT and BMD represented some informations in the evaluation of bone strength assessed by FEA.
This paper presents a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) in order to investigate the flexural performance of one-way slabs strengthened by epoxy-bonded steel plates. Four point loading scheme is selectively chosen. A model is developed to implement the material constitutive relationships and non-linearity. Five Slabs were modeled in FEM software using ABAQUS. One slab was unstrengthened control slab and the others were strengthened with steel plates with varying the plate thickness and configuration. In order to verify the accuracy of the numerical model, a comparison was done between the experimental results available in the literature and the proposed equations by ACI 318-11 for the calculation of ultimate load capacities of strengthened slabs, the agreement has proven to be good and FEA attained accurate results compared with ACI code. A parametric study was also carried out to investigate the influence of thickness of steel plate, strength of epoxy layer and type of strengthening plate on the performance of plated slabs. Also, the practical and technical feasibility of splitting the steel plate in strengthening process has been taken into account. For practical use, the author recommended to use bonded steel plate as one unit rather than splitting it to parts, because this saves more effort and reduces the risk of execution errors as in the case of multiple bonded parts. Both techniques have nearly the same effect upon the performance of strengthened slabs.

The assessment of slope stability is an essential task in geotechnical engineering. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) was employed to investigate the performance of different shear pin arrangements to increase the stability of a soil block resting on an inclined plane with a low-interface friction plane. In the numerical models, the soil block was modeled by volume elements with linear elastic perfectly plastic material in a drained condition, while the shear pins were modeled by volume elements with linear elastic material. Interface elements were used along the bedding plane (bedding interface element) and around the shear pins (shear pin interface element) to simulate the soil-structure interaction. Bedding interface elements were used to capture the shear sliding of the soil on the low-interface friction plane while shear pin interface elements were used to model the shear bonding of the soil around the pins. A failure analysis was performed by means of the gravity loading method. The results of the 3D FEA with the numerical models were compared to those with the physical models for all cases. The effects of the number of shear pins, the shear pin locations, the different shear pin arrangements, the thickness and the width of the soil block and the associated failure mechanisms were discussed.

This paper deals with torque analysis of magnetic spur gear with radial magnetized permanent magnets based on analytical method. The analysis is implemented in three parts: First, on the basis of magnetic vector potential and a two-dimensional (2D) polar-coordinate system, the magnetic field solution due to permanent magnet of source gear are obtained. And by using derived magnetic field solutions, the analytical solutions for external magnetic field distribution which affects load gear are obtained. Second, by using coordinate conversion, external magnetic field which is on the primary coordinate system is converted to the secondary coordinate system. Finally, the load gear is reduced to equivalent current densities, and the torque is computed on these currents in the external field of the source magnet. These analytical results are validated by comparing with the 2-D finite element analysis (FEA).
In this study, we present a comparison of multistage axial flux permanent-magnet machines (AFPMs) with different topologies for use as 100 W-class portable generating systems. Three topologies were selected, and the maximum power density and high level of efficiency were achieved by following the response surface methodology (RSM) in the design. Three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) was used to conduct numerical experiments to obtain the optimum design using the RSM and suggest a proper configuration of the portable generating system.

The docking analysis of a global ship structure is requested to evaluate its structural safety against the reaction forces at supports during docking works inside a dry dock. That problem becomes more important recently as the size of ships is getting larger and larger. The docking supports are appropriately arranged in a dock to avoid their excessive reaction forces which primarily cause the structural damages in docking a ship and, up to now, the structural safety has been assessed against the support arrangement by the finite element analysis (FEA) of a global ship structure. However, it is complicated to establish the finite element model of the ship in the current structural design environment of a shipyard and it takes over a month to finish the work. This paper investigates a simple and fast approach to carry out a ship docking analysis by a simplified grillage model and to assign the docking supports position on the model. The grillage analysis was considered from the motivation that only the reaction forces at supports are sufficient to assess their arrangement. Since the simplified grillage model of the ship cannot guarantee its accuracy quantitatively, modeling strategies are proposed to improve the accuracy. In this paper, comparisons between the proposed approach and three-dimensional FEA for typical types of ships show that the results from the present grillage model have reasonably good agreement with the FEA model. Finally, an integrated program developed for docking supports planning and its evaluation by the proposed approach is briefly described.

The heat transfer phenomenon in the vicinity of the irradiated region of a focused laser beam of a DMT process greatly affects both the deposition characteristics of powders on a substrate and the properties of the deposited region. The goal of this paper is to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a single bead deposition of Inconel 718 powders on S45C structural steel using a laser-aided direct metal tooling (DMT) process. The finite element analysis (FEA) model with a Gaussian volumetric heat flux is developed to simulate a three-dimensional transient heat transfer phenomenon. The cross-section of the bead for the FEA is estimated with an equivalent area method using experimental results. Through the comparison of the results of the experiments and those of the analysis, the effective beam radius of the bottom region of the volumetric heat flux and the efficiency of the heat flux model for different powers and travel speeds of the laser are predicted. From the results of the FEA, the influence of the power and the travel speed of the laser on the creation of a steady-state heat transfer region and the formation of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) in the substrate are investigated.
