  • PURPOSE. When performing an occlusal procedure, it is recommended that the patient should be sitting straight with the head in a natural position. An inappropriate mandibular position caused by an incorrect occlusal record registration or occlusal adjustment can result in damaged teeth and cause functional disorders in muscles and temporomandibular joints. The purpose of this study was to clarify the influence of horizontal cephalic rotation on mandibular position by investigating the three-dimensional positions of condylar and incisal points. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A three-dimensional jaw movement measurement device with six degrees of freedom (the WinJaw System) was used to measure condylar and incisal points. The subjects were asked to sit straight with the head in a natural position. The subjects were then instructed to rotate their head horizontally $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $40^{\circ}$, $50^{\circ}$and $60^{\circ}$ in the right or left direction. RESULTS. The results indicated that horizontal cephalic rotation made the condyle on the rotating side shift forward, downward, and toward the inside, and the condyle on the counter rotating side shift backward, upward, and toward the outside. Significant differences in deviations were found for angles of rotation higher than $20^{\circ}$. The incisal point shifted in the forward and counterrotating directions, and significant differences were found for angles of rotation higher than $20^{\circ}$. CONCLUSION. The mandibular position was altered by horizontal cephalic rotations of more than $20^{\circ}$. It is essential to consider the possibility of deviation of the mandibular position during occlusal procedures.

  • In this study, a series of three-dimensional numerical parametric study was conducted to investigate deformation mechanisms of an existing box culvert due to an adjacent multi-propped basement excavation in clays. Field measurements from an excavation case history are first used to calibrate a baseline Hardening Soil Small Strain (HS-small) model, which is subsequently adopted for parametric study. Results indicate that the basement-box culvert interaction along the basement centerline can be considered as a plane strain condition when the length of excavation (L) reaches 14 He (i.e., final excavation depth). If a plane strain condition (i.e., L/He=12.0) is assumed for analyzing the basement-box culvert interaction of a short excavation (i.e., L/He=2.0), the maximum settlement and horizontal movement of the box culvert are overestimated significantly by up to 15.7 and 5.1 times, respectively. It is also found that the deformation of box culvert can be greatly affected by the basement excavation if the distance between the box culvert and retaining wall is less than 1.5 He. The induced deformation in the box culvert can be dramatically reduced by improving the ground inside the excavation or implementing other precautionary measures. For example, by adding jet grouting columns within the basement and installing an isolation wall behind the retaining structures, the maximum settlements of box culvert are shown to reduce by 37.2% and 13.4%, respectively.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the three dimensional vascular changes of periodontal ligament following orthodontic tooth movement. Experimental tooth movement was carried out in 96 Sprague-Dawley rats with the weight of 250g. They were divided into four experimental groups (each 24 rats). The left maxillary first molar was moved mesially with 25g force in group I, and with 75g force in group II. Each three animals were sacrificed after 1, 6, 12, 24 hours, and 3, 7, 14, 21 days. In group III, 25g mesial force was applied for 3 days, and in group IV, 75g mesial force was applied for 3 days. Then the appliances were removed, and each three animals were sacrificed after 1, 6, 12, 24 hours, and 3, 7, 14, 21 days from removal of appliance. The contralateral molars were used for control group. Casting media was injected via left ventricle and polymerized in warm water. After corrosion of surrounding soft tissue, three dimensional vascular changes were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. Pressure side of group I and II showed degenerative vascular changes such as vascular compression, reduction of vasculature, leakage of casting media. But, regenerative changes were dominant after 7 days of tooth movement. Although the degenerative vascular changes were more severe in group II, which was exposed to heavy force, the timing of these changes was not different between two groups. 2. Periodontal vasculature was reestablished by the growth of new capillaries and their differentiation and union from the remaining periodontal vessels and vessels of alveolar bone marrow. Although vascular regeneration was more rapid in group I, which was exposed to light force, the vasculature was not fully normalized in both groups even after 21 days. 3. There was no remarkable changes in tension side of group I and II, but looping of capillary, new capillary growth, dilation of vessels, redirection of vessels in the direction of tensile force were occurred. 4. In pressure side of group III and IV, in which appliance was removed after 3 days of orthodontic force, bone resorption was continued even after removal of appliance. Regeneration of vasculature was initiated after 1-6 hours, and it was more rapid in group III than group IV. In both groups, the vasculature was not fully normalized even after 21 days. 5. After removal of appliance, tension side of group III and IV showed vascular compression and loss of vasculature.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between the segments of the body, the three dimensional anatomical angle during One Hand Backhand Stroke and Two Hand Backhand in tennis. For the movement analysis three dimensional cinematographical method(APAS) was used and for the calculation of the kinematic variables a self developed program was used with the LabVIEW 6.1 graphical programming(Johnson, 1999) program. By using Eular's equations the three dimensional anatomical Cardan angles of the joint and racket head direction were defined. 1. In three dimensional maximum linear velocity of racket head the X axis and Y axis(horizontal direction) showed $-11.04{\pm}2.69m/sec$, $-9.31{\pm}0.49m/sec$ before impact, the z axis(vertical direction) maximum linear velocity of racket head did not show at impact but after impact this will resulted influence upon hitting ball. It could be suggest that Y axis velocity of racket head influence on ball direction and z axis velocity influence on ball spin after impact. The stance distance between right foot and left foot was mean $75.4{\pm}5.86cm$ during one hand backhand stroke and $72.6{\pm}4.67cm$ during two hand backhand stroke. 2. The three dimensional anatomical angular displacement of trunk in interna rotation-external rotation showed most important role in backhand stroke. and is follwed by flexion-extension. the three dimensional anatomical angular displacement of trunk did not show significant difference between one hand backhand stroke and two hand backhand stroke but the three dimensional anatomical angular displacement of trunk was bigger than one hand backhand stroke. 3. while backhand stroke, the flexion-extension and adduction-abduction of right shoulder joint showed significant different between one hand backhand stroke and two hand backhand stroke. the three dimensional anatomical angular displacement of right shoulder joint showed more flex and abduct in one hand backhand stroke. 4. The three dimensional anatomical angular displacement of left shoulder showed flexion, adduction, and external rotation at impact. after impact, The angular displacement as adduction-abduction of left shoulder changed motion direction as abduction. angular displacement of left shoulder as flexion-extension showed bigger than the right shoulder.

  • Background : When surgeons plan mandible ortho surgery for patients with skeletal class III facial asymmetry, they must be consider the exact method of surgery for correction of the facial asymmetry. Three-dimensional (3D) CT imaging is efficient in depicting specific structures in the craniofacial area. It reproduces actual measurements by minimizing errors from patient movement and allows for image magnification. Due to the rapid development of digital image technology and the expansion of treatment range, rapid progress has been made in the study of three-dimensional facial skeleton analysis. The purpose of this study was to conduct 3D CT image comparisons of mandible changes after mandibular surgery in facial asymmetry patients. Materials & methods : This study included 7 patients who underwent 3D CT before and after correction of facial asymmetry in the oral and maxillofacial surgery department of Yeungnam University Hospital between August 2002 and November 2005. Patients included 2 males and 5 females, with ages ranging from 16 years to 30 years (average 21.4 years). Frontal CT images were obtained before and after surgery, and changes in mandible angle and length were measured. Results : When we compared the measurements obtained before and after mandibular surgery in facial asymmetry patients, correction of facial asymmetry was identified on the "after" images. The mean difference between the right and left mandibular angles before mandibular surgery was $7^{\circ}$, whereas after mandibular surgery it was $1.5^{\circ}$. The right and left mandibular length ratios subtracted from 1 was 0.114 before mandibular surgery, while it was 0.036 after mandibular surgery. The differences were analyzed using the nonparametric test and the Wilcoxon signed ranks test (p<0.05). Conclusion: The system that has been developed produces an accurate three-dimensional representation of the skull, upon which individualized surgery of the skull and jaws is easily performed. The system also permits accurate measurement and monitoring of postsurgical changes to the face and jaws through reproducible and noninvasive means.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinematic variables of glide kip motion on the uneven bars through a two-dimensional cinematography. Three expert female gymnastics players were involved in the data gathering process. The followings were concluded according to the results. The arm, trunk and leg segments were fully extended throughout the kip movement. The whole body center of gravity showed the biggest changes during 66 to 87% of the kip motion. During the kip phase, the horizontal displacement of the leg was greater than the vertical displacement the leg. Glide kip motion should be done in orders of upward movement of leg, forward movement of leg, upward movement of trunk and forward movement of trunk segment. It was found that trunk segment and hip joint movements showed bigger changes than those of leg segment and shoulder joint in the glide kip motion. The largest angular velocity of hip joint was shown in the middle of the kip Phase. In conclusion, effective kip movement could be resulted when the trunk was displaced posterior-upward direction with fast hip joint extension after the leg segment was elevated upward and thrusted forward in advance.

  • High-rise buildings move during construction due to time-dependent material properties of concrete (creep and shrinkage), construction sequences, and structural shapes. The building movements, including vertical and horizontal displacements, result from the sum of axial and lateral deformation of vertical members at each level. In addition to the vertical shortenings, the lateral movement induced by differential shortening can have adverse effects on the construction tolerance and serviceability of non-structural elements such as elevators and curtain walls. In this study a construction stage analysis method is developed to predict lateral movement induced by shortening, including the effect of creep and shrinkage. The algorithm of construction stage analysis is combined with the FE analysis program. It is then applied to predict lateral movement of a 58-story reinforced concrete building that was constructed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Gravity induced lateral movement of this building is predicted by the construction stage analysis. A field three-dimensional laser scanning survey is carried out to verify the prediction results, and satisfactory agreement is obtained.

  • This letter presents Progression-Preserving Projection, a dimension reduction technique that finds a linear projection that maps a high-dimensional sensor dataset into a two- or three-dimensional subspace with a particularly useful property for visual exploration. As a demonstration of its effectiveness as a visual exploration and diagnostic means, we empirically evaluate the proposed technique over a dataset acquired from our own virtual-reality-enhanced ball-intercepting training system designed to promote the upper extremity movement skills of individuals recovering from stroke-related hemiparesis.

  • In general, the salient features if the floating breakwater have excellent regulation of sea-water keeping the marine a1ways clean, up and dorm free movement with the incoming and outgoing tides, capable of being installed without considering the geological condition of sea-bed at any water depth, This study discusses the three dimensional wave transformation of the floating breakwater moored by catenary. Numerical method is based at the Green function method and eigenfunction expansion method. The validity of the present is confirmed by comparing it with the result of Ijima et a1.(1975) fer tensile maxed floating breakwater. According to the numerical results, drift and width of the floating breakwater affect at the wave transformation greatly, and incident wave of long period is well transmitted to the rear of the floating breakwater.
