To reduce the damage from the coastal disaster such as typhoon and tsunami, a possible option is the eco-friendly approach to minimize the destruction of ecological system. One of feasible idea is the forest for damage prevention artificially arranged along the beach. To understand a precise physics on the flow before and after the forest, we use a CFD method. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model has been constructed based on tree cases in a real forest located at Byin-myeon, Seocheon-gun, Chungnam. The CFD computation using a commercial code COMSOL multiphysics is performed for the distribution of real spatial coordinate of each tree. Through this investigation, the CFD techniques are shown to be applied to the research of forest composition plan. The physics in the regime from laminar to turbulent flow is qualitatively explained, and the obtained data are compared one another quantitatively.
The indoor environments in high-rise buildings are generally well enclosed by defined boundary conditions. Here, a numerical simulation method based on the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), which aims to model and simulate the turbulent flow accurately in an enclosed environment, and its comparison with traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results, are presented in this paper. CFD has become a powerful tool for predicting and evaluating enclosed airflows with the rapid advance in computer capacity and speed, and various types of CFD turbulence modeling and its application and validation have been reported. The LBM is a relatively new method; it involves solving of the discrete Boltzmann equation to simulate the fluid flow with a collision model instead of solving Navier-Stokes equations. In this study, the LBM-based scheme of flow pattern and particle dispersion analyses are validated using the benchmark test case of two- and three-dimensional and isothermal conditions (IEA/Annex 20 case); the prediction accuracy and advantages are also discussed by comparison with the results of CFD.
The performance of UV reactor which is used in water treatment is strongly affected by UV fluence rate and water flow in the UV reactor. Therefore, CFD tools are widely used in designing process of UV reactors. This paper describes the development of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methodology that can be used to calculate the performance of open channel type UV reactor used in wastewater treatment plant. All computations were performed using commercial CFD code, CFX, by considering three dimensional, steady, incompressible flow. The Eulerian-Eulerian multi-phase method were used to capture the water-air interface. The MSSS model, provided by UVCalc3D, was used to calculate the UV intensity field. The numerical predictions and calculated UV Dose were compared with experimental dataset to validate the CFD methodology. The reactor performance based on MS2 log reduction was well matched with measurements within 6%.
Numerical investigation of the groove trap effect with variation in the groove-edge radius of curvature is presented here. The trap effect is evaluated in a two-dimensional sliding bearing using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This simulation is based on the discrete phase model (DPM) and standard k - ε turbulence model using commercial CFD software, FLUENT. The numerical results are evaluated by comparisons with streamlines and particle trajectories in the grooves. Grooves are applied to various lubrication systems to improve their lubrication characteristics, such as load carrying capacity increment, leakage reduction, frictional loss reduction, and preventing three-body abrasive wear due to trapping effect. This study investigates the grove trapping effect for various groove-edge radius of curvature values and Reynolds numbers. The particle is assumed to be made of steel, with a circular shape, and is injected as a single particle in various positions. One-way coupling is used in the DPM model because the single particle injection condition is applied. Further, the "reflect" condition is applied to the wall boundary and "escape" condition is used for the "pressure inlet" and "pressure outlet" boundaries. From the numerical results, the groove edge radius is found to influence the groove trap effect. Moreover, the groove trap effect is more effective when applying the groove edge radius.

This paper presents a numerical investigation of two-phase natural circulation flows established when external reactor vessel cooling is applied to a severe accident of the APR1400 reactor for the in-vessel retention of the core melt. The coolability limit due to external reactor vessel cooling is associated with the natural circulation flow rate around the lower head of the reactor vessel. For an elaborate prediction of the natural circulation flow rate using a thermal-hydraulic system code, MARS-KS1.5, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is conducted to estimate the flow rate and pressure distribution of a liquid-state coolant at the brink of significant void generation. The CFD calculation results are used to determine the loss coefficient at major flow junctions, where substantial pressure losses are expected, in the nodalization scheme of the MARS-KS code such that the single-phase flow rate is the same as that predicted via CFD simulations. Subsequently, the MARS-KS analysis is performed for the two-phase natural circulation regime, and the transient behavior of the main thermal-hydraulic variables is investigated.
A computational fluid dynamics(CFD) model is developed and validated with on-site experiments for a urea-based SNCR(selective non-catalytic reduction) process to reduce the nitrogen oxides($NO_x$) in a municipal incinerator. The three-dimensional turbulent reacting flow CFD model having a seven global reaction mechanism under the condition of low CO concentration and 12% excess air and droplet evaporation is used for fluid dynamics simulation of the SNCR process installed in the incinerator. In this SNCR process, urea solution and atomizing air were injected into the secondary combustor, using one front nozzle and two side nozzles. The exit temperature($980^{\circ}C$) of simulation has the same value as in situ experiment one. The $NO_x$ reduction efficiencies of 57% and 59% are obtained from the experiment and CFD simulation, respectively at NSR=1.8(normalized stoichiometric ratio) for the equal flow rate ratio from the three nozzles. It is observed in the CFD simulations with varying the flowrate ratio of the three nozzles that the injection of a two times larger front nozzle flowrate than the side nozzle flowrate produces 8% higher $NO_x$ reduction efficiency than the injection of the equal ratio flowrate in each nozzle.
Three-dimensional steady incompressible laminar entry flows in a square duct of $90^{\circ}$ bend are numerically simulated by a new solution code(PowerCFD) using unstructured cell-centered method. Solutions are obtained with three unstructured grid types of hexahedron, prism and hybrid at a Reynolds number, based on the hydraulic diameter and bulk velocity, of 790. Interesting features of the flow are presented in detail. Detailed comparisons between the computed solutions and the available experimental data are given mainly for the velocity distributions at cross-sections in a $90^{\circ}$ bend of a square duct with fully-developed entry flows. It is found that the code is capable of producing the nature of laminar flow in curved square duct with no grid type dependency.
In this study, numerical simulations of transonic aircraft configurations are performed with various turbulence models and the effect of turbulence models on flow separation are examined. A three-dimensional RANS code and three turbulence models are used for the study. The turbulence models incorporated to the code include Menter's ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ model, Coakley's $q-{\omega}$, and Huang and Coakley's ${\kappa}-{\omega}$, model. Using the code, numerical simulations of DLR-F6 configurations obtained from AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop are conducted. Flow separations on the wing-body juncture and the wing lower surface near pylon are observed. and flow features of the regions are compared with experimental data and other numerical results.
In this paper, a study on the development of OpenFOAM grid generation program for two-dimensional flow analysis is described. By using the pre-processor(eMEGA) of EDISON_CFD system, grids for OpenFOAM flow calculation were obtained. Resultant two-dimensional grids were used to calculate flow fields by applying simpleFoam, one of the OpenFOAM's popular solvers, and the obtained flow results were compared with theoretical and experimental data available. Also grids generated by present program were compared with grids by a commercial pre-processor Pointwise for the purpose of verification. Verification work includes three cases(single block, O-type single block, and multi block grid), and all results show reasonable matches. According to the current achievement, it can be concluded that OpenFOAM grid can be constructed conveniently by using eMEGA with GUI.

The prediction of heat-up time of an LCD glass plate in LCD glass pre-treatment process has been implemented in the present study. Firstly, the analytical solution for one-dimensional radiation heat transfer from IR heaters to a LCD glass plate is obtained. When the surface temperature of the IR heaters is set at 473 K, the heat-up time of LCD glass to averaged temperature of 383K is 28 seconds. In addition, a three dimensional full CFD analysis using STAR-CD is implemented in an effort to consider the effect of 3-D heat loss through the furnace walls. From the results of the 3-D CFB analysis, the heat-up time increases up to 32.5 seconds under the same conditions. When the IR heater temperature in creases up to 573 K, the heat-up time decreases to 12 seconds for the one-dimensional analytical solution and to 13.5 seconds for the 3-D CFD analysis, respectively.
