Flow structures around a rectangular prism have been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. A thick turbulent boundary layer was generated by using spires arid roughness elements. The boundary layer thickness, displacement thickness and momentum thickness were 650mm, 117.4mm and 78mm, respectively. The ratio between the model height(40mm) and the boundary layer thickness H/$\delta$, was 0.06. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the height of the model was 7.9$\times$10$^3$. The PIV measurements were performed at three different wall normal planes. Three recirculation regions at forward facing step, top of the roof and backward facing step are clearly seen and show three dimensional features. Dramatic changes of flow patterns are observed in the wake regions in the different spanwise wall normal planes. Instead of reattachment and recirculation zone, rising streamlines are depicted at the normal planes near the side wall due to the interaction with a rising horse shoe vortex. The peak of turbulent kinetic energy occurs at the separation bubble on top of the roof and the magnitude is 2.5 times higher compared with that of the wake region.

Background: The main purpose of drug delivery systems is to deliver the drugs at the appropriate concentration to the precise target site. Recently, the application of a thin film in the field of drug delivery has gained increasing interest because of its ability to safely load drugs and to release the drug in a controlled manner, which improves drug efficacy. Drug loading by the thin film can be done in various ways, depending on type of the drug, the area of exposure, and the purpose of drug delivery. Main text: This review summarizes the various methods used for preparing thin films with drugs via Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. Furthermore, additional functionalities of thin films using surface modification in drug delivery are briefly discussed. There are three types of methods for preparing a drug-carrying multilayered film using LbL assembly. First methods include approaches for direct loading of the drug into the pre-fabricated multilayer film. Second methods are preparing thin films using drugs as building blocks. Thirdly, the drugs are incorporated in the cargo so that the cargo itself can be used as the materials of the film. Conclusion: The appropriate designs of the drug-loaded film were produced in consideration of the release amounts and site of the desired drug. Furthermore, additional surface modification using the LbL technique enabled the preparation of effective drug delivery carriers with improved targeting effect. Therefore, the multilayer thin films fabricated by the LbL technique are a promising candidate for an ideal drug delivery system and the development possibilities of this technology are infinite.

Due to the development of technologies, complex computation of huge data set is possible with a prevalent personal computer. Therefore, machine learning methods have been widely applied in the hydrologic field such as regression-based regional frequency analysis (RFA). The main purpose of this study is to compare two frameworks of RFA based on the artificial neural network (ANN) models: quantile regression technique (QRT-ANN) and parameter regression technique (PRT-ANN). As an output layer of the ANN model, the QRT-ANN predicts quantiles for various return periods whereas the PRT-ANN provides prediction of three parameters for the generalized extreme value distribution. Rainfall gauging sites where record length is more than 20 years were selected and their annual maximum rainfalls and various hydro-meteorological variables were used as an input layer of the ANN model. While employing the ANN model, 70% and 30% of gauging sites were used as training set and testing set, respectively. For each technique, ANN model structure such as number of hidden layers and nodes was determined by a leave-one-out validation with calculating root mean square error (RMSE). To assess the performances of two frameworks, RMSEs of quantile predicted by the QRT-ANN are compared to those of the PRT-ANN.

A new switchbox router, called CONQUEROR, is proposed in this paper. The proposed CONQUEROR efficiently routes large switchbox routing area using divide-and-conquer technique. The CONQUEROR consists of three phases` namely, partition of large routing area and assignment of optimal pins of sub-area, detailed routing of each sub-ared, reassignment of pins after rip-up. First, large switchbox routing area is partitioned into several sub-areas and each sub-area contains 4-6 detailed grids. Then pins are assigned on boundary of sub-area by the estimated weight. Secondly, when global pin assignment is completed on all sub-areas, each sub-area is routed using detailed router. Also, detailed routing consists of three pases` layerless maze routing, assignment of layer using coloring, and rip-up and reroute. Lastly, if detailed routing of any sub-area fails, reassignment of pins after rip-up is invoked. Detailed routing is performed for the failed sub-area again. Benchmark test cases have been run, and on all the benchmark data known in the literature CONQUEROR has performed as well as or better than existing switchbox routers.

The proposed framework of Four Layer Robust Storage in Cloud (FLRSC) architecture involves host server, local host and edge devices in addition to Virtual Machine Monitoring (VMM). The goal is to protect the privacy of stored data at edge devices. The computational intelligence (CI) part of our algorithm distributes blocks of data to three different layers by partially encoded and forwarded for decoding to the next layer using hash and greed Solomon algorithms. VMM monitoring uses snapshot algorithm to detect intrusion. The proposed system is compared with Tiang Wang method to validate efficiency of data transfer with security. Hence, security is proven against the indexed efficiency. It is an important study to integrate communication between local host software and nearer edge devices through different channels by verifying snapshot using lamport mechanism to ensure integrity and security at software level thereby reducing the latency. It also provides thorough knowledge and understanding about data communication at software level with VMM. The performance evaluation and feasibility study of security in FLRSC against three-layered approach is proven over 232 blocks of data with 98% accuracy. Practical implications and contributions to the growing knowledge base are highlighted along with directions for further research.

The purposes of this study are to develop three-layered Green-Ampt infiltration model considering temporal variation of physical properties of soil and to evaluate the model with field experiment on bare-tilled and soybean-growing soil plots under natural rainfalls. Infiltration tests were conducted on a sandy loam soil. The model has three-layered soil profile including a surface crust, a tilled layer, a subsoil and considers temporal variation of porosity, hydraulic conductivity, capillary pressure head on a tilled layer by natural rainfalls and canopy density variation of crop. Field measurement of porosity, average hydraulic conductivity and average capillary presure head on a tilled layer were conducted by soil sampler and air-entry permeameter at regular intervals-after tillage. It was found that temporal variation of porosity and average hydraulic conductivity might be expressed as a function of cumulative rainfall energy and average capillary pressure head might be expressed as a function of porosity of a tilled soil. The model was calibrated by an optimization technique, Hooke and Jeeves method using hourly surface runoff data. With the calibrated parameters, the model was verified satisfactorily.
In this paper, the properties of strain sensors made of spin-capable multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were characterized and their sensing mechanisms analyzed. The key contribution of this paper is a new fabrication technique that introduces a simpler transfer method compared to spin-coating or dispersion CNT. Resistance of the MWCNT sheet strain sensor increased linearly with higher strain. To investigate the effect of CNT concentration on sensitivity, two strain sensors with different layer numbers of MWCNT sheets (one and three layers) were fabricated. According to the results, the sensor with a three-layer sheet showed higher sensitivity than that with one layer. In addition, experiments were conducted to examine the effects of environmental factors, temperature, and gas on sensor sensitivity. An increase in temperature resulted in a reduction in sensor sensitivity. It was also observed that ambient gas influenced the properties of the MWCNT sheet due to charge transfer. Experimental results showed that there was a linear change in resistance in response to strain, and the resistance of the sensor fully recovered to its unstressed state and exhibited stable electromechanical properties.

This paper explores the potential use of neural networks (NNs) in the field of contact mechanics. A neural network model is developed for predicting, with sufficient approximation, the contact lengths between the elastic layer and two elastic circular punches. A backpropagation neural network of three layers is employed. First contact problem is solved according to the theory of elasticity with integral transformation technique, and then the results are used to train the neural network. The effectiveness of different neural network configurations is investigated. Effect of parameters such as load factor, elastic punch radii and flexibilities that influence the contact lengths is also explored. The results of the theoretical solution and the outputs generated from the neural network are compared. Results indicate that NN predicted the contact length with high accuracy. It is also demonstrated that NN is an excellent method that can reduce time consumed.

Rapid Prototyping(RP) techniques have their unique characteristics according to the working principles: stair-stepped surface of parts due to layer-by-layer stackin, low build speed caused by line-by-line solidification to build one layer, and additional post processing to improve surface roughness, so it is required very high cost to introduce and to maintain RP apparatus. The objective of this study is to develop software for automatic generation of unit shape part (USP) for a new RP process, Variable Lamination Manufacturing using linear hotwire cutting technique and expandable polystyrene foam sheet as part material (VLM-S). In order to examine the applicability of the developed software to VLM-S, USP's of general three-dimensional shapes, such as an auto-shift lever knob and a pyramid shape were generated.

In this paper, a meander-line chip antenna with stacked layer is suggested, designed and fabricated employing the LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic) fabrication techniques. To reduce the antenna chip size, the meander-line antenna strip is distributed over three layer. Layers one interconnected using via holes. A 2.4 GHz chip antenna with size of $3.75{\times}7.9{\times}1.0 mm^3$ is designed and fabricated using the LTCC technique. Measurements of the fabricated antenna show 160 MHz bandwidth and 3.75 dBi maximum gain. The Measured reflection coefficient and radiation patterns agree well with the prediction by electromagnetic simulation.
