Developing Web Contents for Rock-forming Mineral Observation under Polarizing Microscope (편광현미경을 이용한 조암광물 관찰 웹 컨텐츠 개발)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and apply the web contents about the optical characteristics of rock forming minerals. The web contents developed in this study are fundamentally made up so as to show clearly the learning objective and the teaching and learning contents, and to review one content easily and search for another content freely. In addition to the web contents, the photos and moving images of the optical characteristics of rock forming minerals cited in the middle and high school textbooks are demonstrated for the students to recognize the mineral characteristics on the screen. The analysis on the quality level and teaming effect of teaching and teaming materials based on the investigation of the MALSAM after the application of the web contents to the class, showed that most students evaluated were effective for understanding the optical characteristics of the rock-forming minerals. About 62% of the students who used the web contents were able to identify the rock-forming minerals on the thin section under the polarizing microscope.

Operating Properties for a Resistive SFCL of YBCO Thin Films (YBCO 박막의 저항형 초전도 한류기에 대한 동작 특성)

  • We fabricated a resistive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) of a meander type based on a YBCO film with the meander cross section of 5 $\times$ $10^{-6}$$cm^2$, and performed current limitation experiments. The film was coated quench current was 9.6 Apeak at 60 Hz, and the fast quench time was 0.63 msec. The resistance of the limiter continuously increased for three cycles dut to the temperature rise in the gold layer. The temperature of the current limiting element reached the room temperature in 11 msec, $150^{\circ}C$ in 54 msec after quench, and was saturated afterwards. For $45^{\circ}$and $90^{\circ}$faults the fast quench times were 0.56 msec and 0.26 msec, respectively. The quench time is believed to be reduced because the fault occurred when the current was either increasing or at the peak value. This limiter effectively limited the fault current to about 1/5 of the potential current with no SFCL right after the fault and to about 1/8.5 in three cycles. We confirmed that the gold layer effectively carried out the role of heat dissipation as the SFCL was quenched.

Design of Integrated-Optic Biosensor Based on the Evanescent-Field and Two-Horizontal Mode Power Coupling of Si3N4 Rib-Optical Waveguide (Si3N4 립-광도파로의 두-수평모드 파워결합과 소산파 기반 집적광학 바이오센서 설계)

  • We studied an integrated-optic biosensor configuration that operates at a wavelength of 0.63 ㎛ based on the evanescent-wave and two horizontal mode power coupling of Si3N4 rib-optical waveguides formed on a Si/SiO2/Si3N4/SiO2 multilayer thin films. The sensor consists of a single-mode input waveguide, followed by a two-mode section which acts as the sensing region, and a Y-branch output for separating the two output waveguides. The coupling between the two propagating modes in the sensing region produces a periodically repeated optical power exchanges along the propagation. A light power was steered from one output channel to the other due to the change in the cladding layer (bio-material) refractive index, which affected the effective refractive index (phase-shift) of two modes through evanescent-wave. Waveguide analyses based on the rib optical waveguide dimensions were performed using various numerical computational software. Sensitivity values of 12~23 and 65~165 au/RIU, respectively for the width and length of 4 ㎛, and 3841.46 and 26250 ㎛ of the two-mode region corresponding to the refractive index range 1.36~1.43 and 1.398~1.41, respectively, were obtained.

  • In this study, an assessment is made for the helicopter vibration reduction of composite rotor blades using an active twist control concept. The piezoceramic shear actuation mechanism along with elastic couplings of composite blades is used for vibration reduction. The rotor blades are modeled as composite box-beams with actuator layers bonded on the outer surfaces of the thin-walled section. The governing equations of motion for helicopter blades are obtained using Hamilton's principle. A time domain unsteady aerodynamic theory with free wake model is used to obtain the airloads. Various rotor configurations with different elastic couplings with appropriate actuator placement are used to investigate the hub vibration characteristics. Numerical results show that a substantial reduction of $N_b$/rev hub vibration can be achieved using the optimal control algorithm.

A New Flap for 3-Dimensional Vulvar and Vaginal Reconstruction: The "Butterfly Flap" (삼차원적 외음부 재건을 위한 나비형피판술)

  • Purpose: Traditional radical surgery for vulvar cancer produces severe skin and soft tissue defects in the vulvar and vaginal area. Vulvoperineal V-Y advancement fasciocutaneous flaps have limitations in advancement and tension at the wound margin and vaginal orifice area, causing wound disruption or vaginal wall exposure. Therefore, we designed the "Butterfly flap" using a vulvoperineal V-Y advancement fasciocutaneous flap and an inguinal rotational skin flap for 3-dimensional reconstruction of vagina and vulvar area. Methods: A 27 year-old female was diagnosed with vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia. Radical vulvectomy and full-thickness-skin-graft was performed. We designed a vulvoperineal V-Y advancement fasciocutaneous flap as the greater wing and inguinal rotational skin as the lesser wing. After flap elevation, the inguinal flap was rotated $180^{\circ}$ to reconstruct the labia major and vaginal orifice. The perineum was reconstructed using V-Y advancement flaps. Results: The flap survived completely, without any complications. After 6 months, the patient was able to perform normal sexual activities and after 18 months, the patient was able to give birth to normal child by caesarean section. Conclusion: The traditional vulvoperineal V-Y advancement fasciocutaneous flap is thin, reliable, easily elevated and matches local skin quality. However, the vaginal wall becomes exposed due to limited advancement and tension of the flap. The "Butterfly flap" using a vulvoperineal V-Y advancement fasciocutaneous flap and an inguinal rotational skin flap is useful for the release of vaginal orifice contracture, reconstruction of the labia major, and 3-dimensional reconstruction of vagina and vulvar area.

Implication of Soil Minerals on Formation of Impermeable Layers in Saprolite Surface-Piled Upland Fields at Highland

  • Farmers in highlands in South Korea pile up 20 to 30 cm of saprolites, mostly granite- or granite-gneiss-weathered materials, on surface of arable lands every three to five years to compensate eroded soil and sometimes to discontinue soil-borne diseases. Immediate increases of infiltration and percolation rates are expected with coarse textured saprolites while soil drainage becomes poorer in a long-term. In this study, we analyzed mineralogical characteristics and micro-morphology of plow pan to investigate processes making impermeable layers. Soil samples were collected from plow pan, usually located at approximately 20 cm soil depth and at the lower part of piled saprolites, in arable lands in Hoenggye 5-ri, Daekwanryeong-myeon, Gangwon-do (N37.7, E128.7) in which saprolites were added 2, 4, and 8 years ago; saprolites were transported from similar areas. The saturated hydraulic conductivity decreased over time. Based on soil thin section pedography, quartz and feldspar accounted for a majority of minerals. The size of feldspar decreased and macropores became filled with clay or silt particles over time, which implies that macropores were packed with particles weathered from feldspar. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that intensity of feldspar decreased over time and the reverse was true for kaolinite and illite, indicating that feldspar and mica weathering induced formation of kaolinite and illite. Conclusively, deteriorated drainage by formation of impermeable layers in farms with piled saprolites was caused by accumulation of clay minerals such as kaolinite and illite in macropores; illite and kaolinite can be formed by weathering of mica and feldspar, respectively.

Connections between RC beam and square tubed-RC column under axial compression: Experiments

  • The square tubed-reinforced concrete (TRC) column is a kind of special concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, in which the outer thin-walled steel tube does not pass through the beam-column joint, so that the longitudinal steel reinforcing bars in the RC beam are continuous through the connection zone. However, there is a possible decrease of the axial bearing capacity at the TRC column to RC beam connection due to the discontinuity of the column tube, which is a concern to engineers. 24 connections and 7 square TRC columns were tested under axial compression. The primary parameters considered in the tests are: (1) connection location (corner, exterior and interior); (2) dimensions of RC beam cross section; (3) RC beam type (with or without horizontal haunches); (4) tube type (with or without stiffening ribs). The test results show that all specimens have relatively high load-carrying capacity and satisfactory ductility. With a proper design, the connections exhibit higher axial resistance and better ductility performance than the TRC column. The feasibility of this type of connections is verified.

Identification of Pisolithus tinctorius from GNU Campus

  • Globose to clavate base-ball sized, pear shaped, fruiting bodies were found under the Himalayan cedar, Cedrus deodora at less fertile and poor sandy poor soil in the campus of Gyeongsang National University in Jinju, Korea. The fruiting body was at first, round to club-shaped, usually with a narrow, rooting base with yellowish rhizomorphs attached to it and lack a volva and a sterile base. The peridium of fruiting body was tough and crusty. The peridioles were white pea-like capsules in a blackish matrix. The color change to darker tints of brown at the top of the exterior peridium reflected the gradual ripening of the interior gleba and peridioles, which proceeded from the top downward to become a mass of spore dust, appearing as cinnamon brown at the apex of the vertical section. At around this stage, the peridium cracked open linearly, exposing the gleba with powdery spores mass released from overmatured peridioles. Spores were more or less round, warty or spiny, 10 to $12{\mu}m$; globose, cinnamon brown in powdery mass, with spines up to $2{\mu}m$ long. The thin peridium ruptured further in response to the disintegration of the peridioles, releasing the powdery spores, which proceeded until whole fruiting body disappeared leaving the dry spore dust coats in the vicinity. The absence of a capillitium is a distinctive characteristic that distinguishes the specimen from other puff-ball fungi and from most of earthballs. Based on the above characteristics, the specimen was identified as Poslithus tinctorius.

  • This paper explores an implementation of finite element analysis and experiment in the design process of a tape spring hinge used for various CubeSat missions. Tape spring hinges consist of short-length hardened-steel strips with one-sided curvature, and thus the behavior is subject to large deformation with unpredicted non-linearity. Precise dimensions of a commercial tape spring are traced by the use of high-resolution digital camera, and thin-shell FEM analysis is conducted using ABAQUS program. Based on the rotation-moment analysis suggested in previous studies, parametric analysis is conducted by adjusting the contributing factors such as strip thickness and the subtended angle of the cross section. Finally the behaviors are investigated by both analytical and non-linear finite element methods, and the results are compared with the simple measurements. Further studies suggest a possible application in dynamic characteristics of hinges during CubeSat operations.

  • In order to estimate chaff RCS, we suggest here a novel method using the probability distribution. Normally, a chaff is assumed that it is a thin dipole antenna and the RCS can be calculated by the scattering wave theory. Most of the theoretical methods presented were mainly focusing on a single chaff cloud. In this paper, the RCS calculation was done for two or more chaff clouds and the changes of RCS with azimuth angle were observed. Matlab was used for presenting the probability distribution of chaff clouds and RCS calculation. A more accurate RCS estimation method is suggested by estimating the number of chaffs except the blocked elements.
