  • This paper proposes an approximate formulation to estimate the bifurcation buckling loads of cylindrical shells with soft elastic cores under the conditions of axial compression. In general, thin-walled, axially compressed cylindrical shells buckle into a diamond pattern in the elastic range. However, buckling symmetrical with respect to the axis of the cylinder may occur when the cylindrical shell is supported by an elastic medium. By considering this characteristic, we introduce the simplified approximate formulation that can give sufficiently accurate results for the bifurcation buckling loads of cylindrical shells. Moreover the results are compared with the exact buckling loads in order to confirm the accuracy of the proposed approximate formulation.

  • This paper reports a simple and versatile technique for generating highly controllable sinusoidal nanostructures on the surface of poly-(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). The sinusoidal features were generated by oxidizing PDMS slabs with oxygen plasma, then stretching them by wrapping around a cylinderical surface, and finally allowing them to relax. The wavelength and amplitude could be finely controlled by varying the fabrication conditions such as duration of oxidation, diameter of the glass cylinder, duration of stretching, thickness of the PDMS slabs, and temperature during the second hardening process. The varied trends of the buckling patterns were characterized by using an atomic force microscope.

  • The high temperature superconducting bulk can be used as the bearing of induction motors. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of an induction motor with superconducting bearings using HTS bulks. The bearing had eight hexahedron type YBCO bulks. Height, width and thickness of the HTS bulk were 30mm, 30mm and 10mm, respectively. Single phase induction motor was used to drive the shaft made of aluminum and the rotor of a conventional induction motor. To estimate the performance of the HTS bulk magnetic bearing, no load test, load test and Impact test were carried out. Load tests were performed by using air resistance caused by the shaft-mounted thin cylinder with buckets. Impact tests by axial direction and vertical direction impact showed that the vibration of the shaft gradually decayed. The induction motor with HTS bulk magnetic bearing rotated silently and smoothly throughout the tests. According to the test results, conventional bearings can be replaced with superconducting magnetic bearings made of HTS bulks.

  • The gasoline engine tends to high performance, fuel economy, small-sized. Therefore, it is necessary to solve the problems on thermal load, abnormal combustion, etc, in the engine, Thine film instantaneous temperature measurement probe was made. And the manufactural method of probe was established. The instantaneous surface temperatures in the constant volume combustion chamber were measured by this probe and the heat flux was obtained by Fourier analysis. The authors measured the wall temperature of combustion chamber and computed the heat flux through the cylinder wall in order to understand the combustion characteristics depending on height of probe. For achieving this goal, the thin film instantaneous temperature probe was developed for analyzing the instantaneous surface wall temperature and unsteady heat flux on the constant volume combustion chamber.

  • Optimization of process parameters in polymer extrusion is an important task to reduce manufacturing cost. To determine the optimum values of the process parameters, it is essential to find their influence on the strength of polymer breathable thin film. The significance of six important process parameters namely, extruder cylinder temperature, extruder speed, extruder dies temperature, cooling roll temperature, stretching ratio, stretching roll temperature on breathable film strength of polymer extrusion was determined. Moreover, this paper presents the application of Taguchi method and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for maximization of the breathable film strength influenced by extrusion parameters. The optimum parameter combination of extrusion process was obtained by using the analysis of signal-to-noise ratio. The conclusion revealed that extruder speed and stretching ratio were the most influential factor on the film strength, respectively. The best results of film strength were obtained at higher extruder speed and stretching ratio.

  • Characteristics of methane direct-injection spark-ignition stratified combustion in lean hydrogen mixture were analyzed both in a single cylinder engine and in a constant volume combustion chamber. Combustion pressure and Instantaneous combustion chamber wall temperature during the combustion process were measured with a thin-film thermocouple and used in analyses of combustion and cooling loss. Results in this research show that the premixed hydrogen increases cooling loss to combustion chamber wall while achieving combustion promotion, and the combustion system is effective especially in lean mixture conditions. Analysis of flame propagation was also done with Schlieren photography in the constant volume combustion chamber.

  • Polarization of the radar wave refers to the ellipticity angle and orientation angle of the polarization ellipse. An evaluation of the polarization response can help understand the scattering mechanisms involved for a particular area of interest or provide information for image classification and algorithm section. C- and L-band polarization responses measured at urban area show the results that the polarization behavior for dihedral comer reflector or short, thin cylinder reflector appears at located in city streets or buildings site which are lined up and the polarization behavior for a large conducting sphere appears at parts of test site particularly river, flat, and vegetated areas. Also, the co- and cross-polarized response graphs and polarimetric parameters are discussed.

  • This paper deals with the effect of concrete target size on penetration of projectiles. We investigated the penetration depth and residual velocity of projectiles using the 2-D axial symmetric model. Most analysis were conducted with 13 kg projectile (striking velocity: 456.4 m/s) and concrete target with compressive strength of 39 MPa. This paper provided penetration depth (or residual velocity) versus ratio D/d (target diameter, D and projectile diameter, d). When the bottom of concrete cylinder was constrained, penetration depth converged to limit depth more than the ratio D/d of 36. The residual velocity of projectile with thin concrete target were investigated. The residual velocity was converged to specific velocity more than the ratio D/d of 16.

  • Testes from the drake and the gander have been examined by the electron microscopy in thin sections in order to examine the spermiogenesis and the structure of spermatozoa. The spermiogenesis can be divided into three stages: early spermatid, nuclear elongation, and matured spermatid. In the early spermatid of the drake, there are thread-like material in the nucleus, a prominent nuclear envelope around the nucleus, and big lumens in the cytoplasm. The shape of the gander's mitochondria in the early spermatid is slender compared to that of the drake, and the inner membrane of the mitochondria is thicker than the outer membrane. The distal centriole of the drake and the gander in the early spermatid is a long hollow cylinder form. In the nuclear elongation stage, elongated nucleus forms two or three cross sections in one spermatid cell and it is surrounded by the amorphous sheath. The nucleus of the matured spermatid is compact and its apical end is covered with acrosome cap and acrosome spine. The axoneme is surrounded by the amorphous material.

  • Thin film flow in the clearance between cylinder bore and axially moving compositeshape piston is analyzed to study the effect of piston shape on the lubrication characteristics of hydraulic piston pump and motor. It is shown that the piston shape significantly affect the distribution of fluid film pressure, lateral force acting on the piston and leakage flow rate in the clearance. And it is also shown that the composite-shape piston is more effective than the cylindrical piston under tilted condition to reduce the possibility of hydraulic locking. Therefore, the results of present study can be used usefully in the design-and manufacturing of hydraulic piston pump and motor.
