  • Fatigue crack growth retardation of 304 L stainless steel is studied using a neutron diffraction method. Three orthogonal strain components(crack growth, crack opening, and through-thickness direction) are measured in the vicinity of the crack tip along the crack propagation direction. The residual strain profiles (1) at the mid-thickness and (2) at the 1.5 mm away from the mid-thickness of the compact tension(CT) specimen are compared. Residual lattice strains at the 1.5 mm location are slightly higher than at the mid-thickness. The CT specimen is deformed in situ under applied loads, thereby providing evolution of the internal stress fields around the crack tip. A tensile overload results in an increased magnitude of the compressive residual stress field. In the crack growth retardation, it is found that the stresses are dispersed in the crack-wake region, where the highest compressive residual stresses are measured. Our neutron diffraction mapping results reveal that the dominant mechanism is by interrupting the transfer of stress concentration at the crack tip.

  • Dynamic analysis of a shear deformable shell is investigated with accounting thickness stretching using Hamilton's principle. Through this method, the total transverse is composed into bending, shearing and stretching portions, in which the third part is responsible for deformation along the transverse direction. After computation of the strain, kinetic and external energies, the governing motion equations are derived using Hamilton's principle. A comparative study is presented before presentation of full numerical results for confirmation of the formulation and methodology. The results are presented with and without thickness stretching to show importance of the proposed theory in comparison with previous theories without thickness stretching.

  • This article presents a comprehensive static analysis of simply supported cross-ply carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) laminated nanobeams under various loading profiles. The nonlocal strain gradient constitutive relation is exploited to present the size-dependence of nano-scale. New higher shear deformation beam theory with hyperbolic function is proposed to satisfy the zero-shear effect at boundaries and parabolic variation through the thickness. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), as the reinforced elements, are distributed through the beam thickness with different distribution functions, which are, uniform distribution (UD-CNTRC), V- distribution (FG-V CNTRC), O- distribution (FG-O CNTRC) and X- distribution (FG-X CNTRC). The equilibrium equations are derived, and Fourier series function are used to solve the obtained differential equation and get the response of nanobeam under uniform, linear or sinusoidal mechanical loadings. Numerical results are obtained to present influences of CNTs reinforcement patterns, composite laminate structure, nonlocal parameter, length scale parameter, geometric parameters on center deflection ad stresses of CNTRC laminated nanobeams. The proposed model is effective in analysis and design of composite structure ranging from macro-scale to nano-scale.

  • A four-node plate finite element for the analysis of laminated composites which is developed using strain gradient notation is presented. The element is based on a first-order shear deformation theory and on the equivalent lamina assumption. Strains and stresses can be calculated at different points through the thickness of the plate. They are averaged values due to the equivalent lamina assumption. A shear correction factor is used as the transverse shear strain is taken to be constant over the plate thickness while its actual variation is parabolic. Strain gradient notation, which is physically interpretable, allows for the detailed a-priori analysis of the finite element model. The polynomial expansions are inspected and spurious terms responsible for modeling errors are identified in the shear strains polynomial expansions. The element is corrected by simply removing the spurious terms from the shear strains expansions. The element is implemented into a FORTRAN finite element code in two versions; namely, with and without spurious terms. Results are compared to show the effects of the spurious terms on the solutions. It is also shown that a refined mesh composed of corrected elements provides solutions which approximate very well the analytical solutions, validating the procedure.

  • A FEA(finite element analysis) model was proposed to study stress and strain distributions in thick composites with various types of fiber waviness under tensile and compressive loadings. Three types of model were considered in this study: uniform fiber waviness, graded fiber waviness and localized fiber waviness models. In the analysis, both material and geometrical nonlinearities due to fiber waviness were incorporated into the model utilizing energy density and incremental method. The strain distributions of uniform fiber waviness model were strongly influenced whereas the stress distributions were little influenced by fiber waviness. The stress and strain distributions of graded and localized fiber waviness models showed more complex distributions than those of uniform fiber waviness model due to the variation of fiber waviness along the thickness and length directions. It was concluded that the stress and strain distributions of composites with fiber waviness were significantly affected by types of fiber waviness.

  • This paper investigated into the impact characteristics of the stainless sheet with thickness of 0.7 mm on the stretching boundary condition through three-dimensional finite element analysis. High speed tensile tests were carried out to obtain strain-stress relationships with the effects of the strain rate. The FE analysis was performed by the ABAQUS explicit code. In order to improve an accuracy of the FE analysis, the hyper-elastic model and the damping factor were introduced. Through the comparison of the results of the FE analyses and those of the impact tests, a proper FE model was obtained. The results of the FE analyses showed that the absorption rate of energy maintains almost 82.5-83.5% irrespective of the impact energy level and the diameter of the impact head. From the results of FE analyses, variations of stress, strain, dissipation energy, strain energy density, and local deformation characteristics in the stainless sheet during the collision and the rebound of the impact head were quantitatively examined. In addition, it was shown that the fracture of the specimen occurs when the plastic strain is 0.42 and the maximum value of the plastic dissipation energy of the specimen is nearly 1.83 J.

  • Recently advanced laser processing is widely introduced to improve the efficiency of micro part production and to reduce the rate of inferior goods. In this paper the trend of delamination of single layer with both thin copper and polyimide according to the variation of copper thickness was investigated using the coupled thermal-structural analysis of ANSYS. From these analyses results, some conclusions were obtained. Firstly, the maximum temperature was increasing with respect to decrease of copper thickness. Secondly the maximum strain which was in general estimation the main effect of the delamination was observed in case of the copper thickness of $5{\mu}m$. Finally the trend of the delamination was decreasing with increasing the thickness of copper layer.

  • Using higher order Mindlin plates and piezoelectric materials, eigenvalue problems are considered. Since piezoelectric crystal resonators produce a proper amount of electric signal for a thickness-shear frequency, the objective is to decouple the thickness-shear mode from the others. Design variables are the bulk material densities corresponding to the mass of masking plates for electrodes. The design sensitivity expressions for the thickness-shear frequency and mode shape vector are derived using direct differentiation method(DDM). Using the developed design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method, we formulate a topology optimization problem whose objective function is to maximize the thickness-shear component of strain energy density at the thickness-shear mode. Constraints are the allowable volume and area of masking plate. Numerical examples show that the optimal design yields an improved mode shape and thickness-shear energy.

  • The present research investigates post-buckling behavior of geometrically imperfect tapered curved micro-panels made of graphene oxide powder (GOP) reinforced composite. Micro-scale effects on the panel structure have been included based on strain gradient elasticity. Micro-panel is considered to be tapered based on thickness variation along longitudinal direction. Weight fractions of uniformly and linearly distributed GOPs are included in material properties based on Halpin-Tsai homogenization scheme considering. Post-buckling curves have been determined based on both perfect and imperfect micro-panel assumptions. It is found that post-buckling curves are varying with the changes of GOPs weight fraction, geometric imperfection, GOP distribution type, variable thickness parameters, panel curvature radius and strain gradient.
