A comparison and analysis of laser sensors for measuring the flatness and thickness of flat display glass (평판 디스플레이용 유리의 평탄도 및 두께 측정을 위한 레이저 센서의 비교 분석)

  • In this paper the glass inspection system for the thickness and flatness is implemented. Laser sensors and robot arms required for glass measurements is tested on the performance assesment. Three kinds of laser sensors are used and analysed, and 3-axis robot arm with the ball-screwed type is implemented. Thus the methods of glass measurement is discussed and the difficulties are solved to propose the solutions. To minimize the errors of glass measurement the system is improved as considered device errors.

An Experimental Study to Reduce the Fraction of Noise Defect of Hoist Gear Boxes (호이스트 기어박스의 소음불량률 저감을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper deals with the experimental research, including measurement and analysis and field survey, on the causes of occurring noise defective gear boxes in hoist production plant in order to reduce the fraction of their occurrence. In this reserch following investigations are performed : measurement and gear-boxes, examination of each machining process of production, measurement and analysis of dimensional accuracy of each part, comparative vibration test with exchanging inaccurate parts. From these investigations, it is found that the machining accuracy of pinion gear tooth thickness is the most sensitive factor of noise problem. By maintaining the tooth thickness error within 0.05 mm tolerance in the gear cutting process, the fraction of noise defective gear-boxes are greatly reduced to less than 2%, where the usual rate of it has been 20-50%.

  • PMN-PT, a piezoelectric single crystal, has many useful applications such as sensors and actuators. In this paper, all the elastic, piezoelectric, and dielectric constants of the PMN-32%PT single crystals were measured by the resonance method. For the rhombohedral symmetry, a total of twelve independent material constants were measured such as six elastic compliance constants at constant electric field, two dielectric constants at constant stress, and four piezoelectric constants d. Seven sets of crystal samples of each different geometry were prepared for the measurement of length-thickness extensional, thickness extensional, radial, length extensional and thickness shear modes of vibration, respectively. In order to check the validity of the measurement, experimental impedance spectrum of the PMN-PT crystal was compared with numerical data spectrum calculated with the measured material constants. The good agreement between the two spectra confirmed validity of the results in this paper.

  • UT(Ultrasonic Test), one of the non-destructive tests, is the most common thickness measurement method for evaluating the wear rate in NPPs(Nuclear Power Plants). UT is used widely because it is easy and safe for use. However some amount of error inevitably occurs in attempting to measure the thickness. The error, that could make the thickness data thicker or thinner, may affect estimation of wear rate in pipes. NPPs are composed of a lot of pipes and components. Some of them are tested to check the current status during RFO(Re-Fueling Outage). Reliability analysis of UT is essential for evaluating pipe wear rate and establishing the long-term management plan in NPPs. This paper reviewed the cause of error occurrence and presented the UT data reliability analysis method. Also, this paper shows the application result of reliability analysis to the UT data acquired in NPPs.

  • The dispersive method of white-light interferometry is proper for in-line 3-D inspection of dielectric thin-film thickness to be used in the semiconductor and flat-panel display industry. This research is the measurement application of CMP patterned wafer. The results describe 3-D and 2-D profile of the step height during polishing time.

The Thickness Measurement of Masticatory Mucosa on the Hard Palate and Maxillary Tuberosity in Healthy Korean Adults (건강한 한국 성인에서 경구개와 상악결절 부위 저작점막의 두께 측정)

  • The aim of present study was to assess the thickness of masticatory mucosa on the hard palate and tuberosity as a potential donor site for mucogingival surgery. Thickness measurement was performed in 30 dental college students who are periodontally healthy, with a recently developed, ultrasonic device(SDM). The mean age of study subjects was 23.7(range 21-29) years old and the subjects were composed of 18 males and 12 females. Eighteen standard measurement points were defined on the hard palate, located on 3 lines which ran at different distances parallel to the gingival margin. Six positions were designated on each of these 3 lines between the level of the canine and the second molar. On the tuberosity, 6 standard measurement points were defined, located on 2 lines running parallel to the gingival margin at different distances. Data were analyzed to determine differences in gender, between different positions, and between lines, by an analysis of variance. The results showed that the mucosa of the tuberosity was significantly thicker than that of the hard palate region. Gender did not influence the thickness of masticatory mucosa, either on the hard palate or the tuberosity. On the hard palate, mucosa thickness increased as the distance from the marginal gingiva increased. The mucosa over the palatal root of the maxillary first molar was significantly thinner than that at all other positions on the hard palate. Measurement error at palate was 0.25mm, at tuberosity 0.51mm. No difference in the thickness of masticatory mucosa on palate and tuberosity was found between men and women. On the hard palate, soft tissue thickness progressively increased in sites further from the gingival margin. Therefore, we may harvest more thicker graft on the tuberosity that has more masticatory mucosa thickness than hard palate, however the width may not be sufficient for using.

Measurement of Sea Ice Thickness in the Arctic Ocean Using an Electromagnetic Induction Instrument (전자기 유도 장비를 이용한 북극해 해빙의 두께측정)

  • The ice trials of the first Korean icebreaking research vessel "ARAON" were performed at the Arctic Ocean in July-August 2010. The sea ice concentrations of Arctic Ocean were 4/10 to 10/10 and the range of sea ice thickness was roughly 1.0 to 3.5m. In this research, sea ice thickness characteristics at the old ice floes were determined from results of drill hole and apparent conductivity measurements. Especially we measured apparent conductivity using an electromagnetic induction instrument (EM31-MK2) and estimated the sea ice thickness through the empirical equation from Cold Regions Research & Engineering Laboratory, CRREL. The results of estimated sea ice thickness were compared to drill hole measurement results and then, we suggest the new empirical equation to estimate sea ice thickness of single layer type sea ice during the summer season of Arctic Ocean by curve fitting approach to these data.

Measurement and Clinical Analysis of Carotid Intima, Media and Intima-Media Thickness

  • Individual clinical significance of each layer of CCA (common carotid artery) has not been well studied. We intended to measure the intima thickness (IT), media thickness (MT), and intima-media thickness (IMT) of CCA separately and tried to analyze the clinical significance. One hundred fifty one consecutive patients (mean age: $57{\pm}15$ years; 77 males, 74 females) underwent CCA scanning using high-resolution ultrasound. The images were off-line analyzed using B-mode ultrasound image processing, devised for individual measurement of IT and MT as well as IMT. The mean coefficients of variation of new method measuring IT, MT, and IMT separately were 0.16% for IMT and 0.21% for both IT and MT. The IT (p < 0.01), MT (p < 0.01) as well as IMT (p < 0.001) of patients with atherosclerotic disease were significantly thicker than that of the patients without atherosclerotic disease. Patients with hypertension showed significantly thicker IT (p < 0.01), MT (p < 0.001), and IMT (p < 0.001) than that of the patients without hypertension. However, only IT was thicker in patients with smoking (p<0.01) than that of the patients without smoking.

  • In this paper, a non-contact method of evaluating the thickness reduction in an aluminum sheet caused by corrosion and friction using SH-EMAT (shear horizontal, electromagnetic acoustic transducer) is described. Since this method is based on the measurement of the time-of-flight and amplitude change of guided waves caused from the thickness reduction, it provides information on the thinning defects. Information was obtained on the changes of the various wave features, such as their time-of-flight and amplitude, and their correlations with the thickness reduction were investigated. The interesting features in the dispersive behavior of selected guided modes were used for the detection of thinning defects. The measurements of these features using SH waves were performed on aluminum specimens with regions thinned by 7.2% to 29.5% of the total thickness. It is shown that the time-of-flight measurement provides an estimation of the thickness reduction and length of the thinning defects.

A Study on the Ultrasonic Technique for Measurement of Vibration in Journal Bearing (저어널 베어링의 진동 계측을 위한 초음파 응용 기술에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes a new technique for measurement of the displacement less than one-quarter of the wavelength of ultrasonic wave using ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The technique determines the displacement of a journal bearing from the amplitudes of the total reflected waves from the surface of journal inside the bearing. Vibration of journal bearing can be measured without using a very high frequency ultrasonic transduce over 100MHz which must be used in the conventional techniques for the precision measurement of a small displacement. The method also requires no inversion process to extract the thickness from the waveforms of the reflected waves, so that it makes possible on-line measurement of the vibration of journal bearing.
