Methods for predicting the ultimate/buckling strength of ship structures have been extensively improved in terms of design formulas and analytical solutions. In recent years, the design strategy of ships and offshore structures has tended to emphasize lighter builds and improve operational safety. Therefore, the corresponding geometrical changes in design necessitate the use of high-tensile steel and thin plates. However, the existing design formulas were mainly developed for thick plates and mild steels. Therefore, the calculation methods require appropriate modification for new designs beased on high-tensile steel and thin plates. In this study, a modified formula was developed to predict the ultimate strength of thin steel plates subjected to compressive and shear loads. Based on the numerical results, the effects of the yield stress, slenderness ratio, and loading condition on the buckling/ultimate strength of steel plates were examined, and a newly modified double-beta parameter formula was developed. The results were used to derive and modify existing closed-form expressions and empirical formulas to predict the ultimate strength of thin-walled steel structures.

In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed for detecting the product number of each thick plate and extracting each character of the product number from a image which contains several thick plates. In general, a image of thick plates contains several steal plates. To obtain the product number from the image, we first need to separate each plate. To do so, we use the line edges of thick plates and a clustering algorithm. After separating each plate, background parts are eliminated from the image of each plate. Background parts of an individual thick plate image consist of the dark part of steel and the white part of paint which is used for printing the product number. We propose a two-tiered method where dark background parts are first eliminated and then white parts are eliminated. Finally, each character is extracted from the product number image using the characteristics of product number. The results of the experiments on the various steal plates images emphasize that the proposed algorithm detects each thick plate and extracts the product number from a image effectively.

Automation of inventory management in a steel plate factory was a difficult problem unresolved for a long time. And now, it is also necessary to work diligently in the steel industry on efficient inventory management of thick plates. So far, the environmental characteristics of stacked thick plates means it is not easy to apply advanced technology for their automatic identification. In this paper, we propose a thick-plate robotic scanning system based on radio-frequency identification (RFID) that can provide quick and accurate inventory management by acquiring plate information after the scanning automatically recognizes the RFID tags under difficult load conditions. This system is equipped with a crane to move the plates in a pulled-up operation. It is equipped with a plate-only linear dipole antenna only for scanning the position of the plate tag. Only the linear dipole antenna, while moving the x-axis and y-axis information, automatically identifies the tag information attached to the plate. The tag information acquired by the system is used for stockpiling and is managed by steel plate inventory control software. The effectiveness of the proposed system is verified through field performance evaluation. As a result, the recognition rate of the plate tags is 99.9% at a maximum distance of 320 cm. The developed thick-plate antenna showed excellent performance compared to an existing commercial antenna.
This paper aims to investigate the free vibration analysis of FG plates, taking into account the effects of even and uneven porosity. The study employs the Hellinger-Reisner functional and obtains the element's bending stress and membrane stress fields from the analytical solution of the governing equations of the thick plate and plane problem, respectively. The displacement field serves as the second independent field. While few articles on free vibration analysis of circular plates exist, this paper investigates the free vibration of both rectangular and circular plates. After validating the proposed element, the paper investigates the effects of porosity distributions on the natural frequency of the FG porous plate. The study calculates the natural frequency of thin and thick bending plates with different aspect ratios and support conditions for various porosity and volume fraction index values. The study uses three types of porosity distributions, X, V, and O, for the uneven porosity distribution case. For O and V porosity distribution modes, porosity has a minor effect on the natural frequency for both circular and rectangular plates. However, in the case of even porosity distribution or X porosity distribution, the effect of porosity on the natural frequency of circular and rectangular plates increases with an increase in the volume fraction index.

Recently, there have been the increase of ship size and the development of oil and gas in arctic region. These trends have led to the requirements such as high strength, good toughness at low temperature and good weldability for prevent of brittle fracture at service temperature. There has been the key issue of crack arrestability in large size structure such as container ship. In this report for the first time, crack arrest toughness of thick steel plate welds was evaluated by large scale ESSO test for estimate of brittle crack arrestability in thick steel plate. For large structures using thick steel plates, fracture toughness of welded joint is an important factor to obtain structural integrity. In general, there are two kinds of design concepts based on fracture toughness: crack initiation and crack arrest. So far, when steel structures such as buildings, bridges and ships were manufactured using thick steel plates (max. 80~100mm in thickness), they had to be designed in order to avoid crack initiation, especially in welded joint. However, crack arrest design has been considered as a second line of defense and applied to limited industries like pipelines and nuclear power plants. Although welded joint is the weakest part to brittle fracture, there are few results to investigate crack arrest toughness of welded joint. In this study, brittle crack arrest designs were developed for hatch side coaming of large container ships using arrest weld, hole, and insert technology.
CO2 laser had enabled accurate and effective cutting. But its application has been limited to thin and small parts. Development of a high power oscillator and oscillator built-in cutting machine have realized cutting of thick and large steel parts. This machine brings also possibility of fully automated cutting systems to practical steel parts such as for construction machinery.

As a continuing work of previously conducted standard tension tests, full-scale flexural tests were conducted in this study to assess the structural performance the CJP groove welded joints connecting thick HSA800 plates. Two welding electrodes were available at the time of this experimental research; one was GMAW-based electrode A and the other FCAW-based electrode B. Three full-scale box-type beam specimens with single bevel- and V-groove CJP welded joints were fabricated from 60mm and 25mm thick HSA800 plates according to the AWS-prequalified groove welded joint details. In designing the specimens, all possible limit states like local and lateral torsional buckling were carefully controlled in order to induce flexural plastic yielding or eventual joint fracture. All the CJP joints made by both welding electrodes showed satisfactory performance and were able to transfer the tensile flange forces higher than that corresponding to the measured tensile strength of HSA800 flange plates. However, it should be noted that, during fabrication, serious concerns about the welding efficiency and workability of the GMAW-based electrode were raised by a certified welder. The fracture occurred at the unbeveled (or vertical) interface between the weldment and the base metal when the GMAW-based electrode was used in the single-bevel joint, implying the possibility of insufficient melting. Thus, the FCAW-based electrode B is again recommended as the choice of welding electrode for HSA800 plates. The limited test data of this study implies that the V-groove CJP joint should be used in favor of the single bevel CJP joint, if possible.
The study discussed in this paper investigated the material characteristics for the Thermo-Mechanical Control Process(TMCP) plates, which are controlled by several factors such as rolling, cold-stripping, cooling rate, and fixed carbon quantity. The suitability of thick TMCP steel plates as structural steel was also estimated through several experiments and with the us of a statistical method to analyze mill certificate sheets provided by the manufacturer. The results of this study are as follows: the TMCP steel plates showed stable values of the composition parameter ($P_cm$) and the carbon equivalents ($C_eq$ ) with satisfied yield strength, ultimate strength, and low-yield ratio.

Deck plates and hatch coming of large container carrier and offshore structures are joined by ultra-thick plates whose thickness is more than 60mm. Traditionally FCAW has been used to join the thick plates in butt joint. However, FCAW has been replaced with EGW since the welding efficiency of EGW is higher than that of FCAW. Tandem EGW using two electrodes has been applied to vertical position welding by several shipyards. EGW requires one or two layers of bead whereas FCAW requires more than 20 layers of weld bead in thick welding. However, high welding residual stresses are generated by EGW since it uses higher heat input than FCAW. In the present study, a finite element model is suggested to predict the residual stresses induced by the tandem EGW. Butt specimen of EH40 TMCP shipbuilding steel plates vertical welding was modeled by a three-dimensional model. Residual stresses were measured by X-ray diffraction method and to verify the numerical result. The results show a good agreement with experimental result.
A coupled method, that combines the Ritz method and the finite element (FE) method, is proposed to solve the vibration problem of rectangular thin and thick plates with general boundary conditions. The eigenvalue partial differential equation(s) of the plate is (are) first reduced to a set of eigenvalue ordinary differential equations by the application of the Ritz method. The resulting eigenvalue differential equations are then reduced to an eigenvalue algebraic equation system using the finite element method. The natural boundary conditions of the plate problem including the free edge and free corner boundary conditions are also implemented in a simple and accurate manner. Various boundary conditions including simply supported, clamped and free boundary conditions are considered. Comparisons with existing numerical and analytical solutions show that the proposed mixed method can produce highly accurate results for the problems considered using a small number of Ritz terms and finite elements. The proposed mixed Ritz-FE formulation is also compared with the mixed FE-Ritz formulation which has been recently proposed by the present author and his co-author. It is found that the proposed mixed Ritz-FE formulation is more efficient than the mixed FE-Ritz formulation for free vibration analysis of rectangular plates with Levy-type boundary conditions.
