The failure modes of steel column-base plate connection arranged on the basis of AISC Design Guide-#1 and -#10 are base plate tension and compression side flexural yielding, yielding, pull-out and shear failure of anchor rod, concrete crushing in concrete footing and steel column yielding. The bending moment capacity and failure mode in this connection are predicted using limit-state function and we compare these results and test result. In the case that thickness of base plate is relatively thick, bending moment capacity and failure mode in steel column-base plate connection accurately predicted. But in the case that thickness of base plate is relatively thin and axial force do not exist, prediction of failure mode in this connection is somewhat inaccurate.

Partial penetration welding Joint defines that groove welds without steel backing, welded from on side, and groove weeds welded from both sides but without back gouging, that is. it has an unwelded portion at the root of the weld. In this study we analysed fur residual stress and displacement distribution on partial penetration welding condition of thick plate metal. For 25.4mm thick plate, theoretical residual stress and displacement analysis by finite element method using ABAQUS was carried out and compared with the experimental result using hole-drilling method. In results of the condition of partial penetration, it appeared that longitudinal stress at welding area was a little difference and transverse stress did not have any effect by partial penetration multi-pass welding. From a point of welding distortion in partial penetration multi-pass welding, it seemed to be better to control root face smaller than 6.35mm.

Incremental forming path to manufacture a thick concave steel plate using the line array roll set is designed. To find the optimum forming path, the forming processes are simulated by the finite element method. A general-purpose commercial software, MSC MARC is used. A modeling with 8-node hexahedral elastic-plastic solid is performed to predict accurate springback and the analysis process was composed of 18 passes. The proposed forming paths are verified through experiments carried out in the prototype line array roll set. It is found that the process can be successfully applied to the fabrication of the dual curvature ship hull plate.

The major objects of this study is to investigate experimentally the strengthening effects and post-failure behavior of reinforced concrete beam-columns with enlarged sections. Tests are carried out to evaluate the influences of axial load intensities, thickness of encased steel plates and reinforcing bars in the grouted parts on the structural behavior of the specimens. The test results show that the amount of reinforcing bars and thickness of steel plate significantly affect on the structural behavior. The ultimate moment capacities of reinforced concrete beam-columns encased with 2mm-thick steel plate are significantly increased to about 10 times of those of unstrengthened specimens.

Strengthening of civil infrastructure with advanced composites have recently become one of the most popular methods. The use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) strips plates and fabric for strengthening of reinforced concrete structures has well established design guidelines and standards. Research on the application of FRP composites to steel structures compared to concrete structures is limited, especially for shear strengthening applications. Whereas, there is a need for cost-effective system that could be used to strengthen steel high-way bridge girders to cope with losses due to corrosion in addition to continuous demands for increasing traffic loads. In this study, a parametric finite element study is performed to investigate the effect of applying thick CFRP strips diagonally on webs of plate girders on the shear strength of end-web panels. The study focuses on illustrating the effect of several geometric parameters on nominal shear strength. Hence, a formula is developed to determine the enhancement of shear strength gained upon the application of CFRP strips.

As a novel method to produce a steel beam with 6mm thickness for buildings, a continuous roll forming process is reported. The roll shape is asymmetric and consists of 6 pairs of rollers to bend the steel plate from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$. Results obtained upon application of the roll forming process showed that the angle of the section plate is $90^{\circ}$. However, defects such as bowing and camber as high as 3.2 [$^{\circ}/m$] were observed. A FEM (Finite Element Method) analysis was applied to investigate the causes of the results for the region between rollers no. 5 and no. 6. The results of a FEM simulation of deformation and stress showed that there are some strong peak stresses on the upper surface and bottom surface of the material. The positions of the peak stresses did not show a correspondence between the upper and bottom surfaces. Thus, the defects in the process of roll forming with a 6 mm thick steel plate occur by the unbalanced stresses between the upper surface and bottom surface of the material in this study.
This paper is motivated by the lack of studies in the technical literature concerning to the influence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) waviness and aspect ratio on the vibrational behavior of functionally graded nanocomposite annular sector plates resting on two-parameter elastic foundations. The carbon nanotube-reinforced (CNTR) plate has smooth variation of CNT fraction based on the power-law distribution in the thickness direction, and the material properties are also estimated by the extended rule of mixture. In this study, the classical theory concerning the mechanical efficiency of a matrix embedding finite length fibers has been modified by introducing the tube-to-tube random contact, which explicitly accounts for the progressive reduction of the tubes' effective aspect ratio as the filler content increases. Parametric studies are carried out to highlight the influence of CNTs volume fraction, waviness and aspect ratio, boundary conditions and elastic foundation on vibrational behavior of FG-CNT thick sectorial plates. The study is carried out based on three-dimensional theory of elasticity and in contrary to two-dimensional theories, such as classical, the first- and the higher-order shear deformation plate theories, this approach does not neglect transverse normal deformations. The annular sector plate is assumed to be simply supported in the radial edges while any arbitrary boundary conditions are applied to the other two circular edges including simply supported, clamped and free. For an overall comprehension on 3-D vibration of annular sector plates, some mode shape contour plots are reported in this research work.
This article deals with the buckling analysis in the plates containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) subject to axial load. In order to control the plate smartly, a piezoelectric layer covered the plate. The plate is located in elastic medium which is modeled by spring elements. The Mori-Tanaka low is utilized for calculating the equivalent mechanical characteristics of the plate. The structure is modeled by a thick plate and the governing equations are deduced using Hamilton's principle under the assumption of higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The Navier method is applied to obtain the bulking load. The effects of the applied voltage to the smart layer, agglomeration and volume percent of CNT nanoparticles, geometrical parameters and elastic medium of the structure are assessed on the buckling response. It has been demonstrated that by applying a negative voltage, the buckling load is increased significantly.

The in-process monitoring of $CO_2$ welding of Zn-coated steel plates has been studied and compared with that of conventional thin plates. Relationships between weld defects and plasma emission signals were evaluated in laser lap joint of thick Zn-coated steel. According to the study, weld defects were found to increase with Zn content. As a result, measured plasma emission signals also decreased. In case of plate with $15{\mu}m$-thick Zn-coated layer, defects caused by evaporation of Zn could, therfore, controled by gap of 0.1mm, resulting in a stable emission signals. However, the amplitude of signals fluctuated very widely. Variation of amplitude sould be limited in 3-8V by FFT smoothing.
Unlike conventional Eddy Current Test (ECT), Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) uses a multiple-frequency current pulse through the excitation coil. In the present study, the detection of subsurface cracks using a specially designed probe that allows the detection of a deeper crack with a relatively small current density has been attempted using the PEC technique. The tested sample is a piece of 304 stainless steel (SS304) with a thickness of 30mm. Small electrical discharge machining (EDM) notches were put in the test sample at different depths from the surface to simulate the subsurface cracks in a pipe. The designed PEC probe consists of an excitation coil and a Hall sensor and can detect a subsurface crack as narrow and shallow as 0.2 mm wide and 2 mm deep. The maximum distance between the probe and the defect is 28 mm. The peak amplitude of the detected pulse is used to evaluate the cracks under the sample surface. In time domain analysis, the greater the crack depth the greater the peak amplitude of the detected pulse. The experimental results indicated that the proposed system has the potential to detect the subsurface cracks in stainless steel plates.
