  • The smelly nitro compounds were extracted from dried fishes by simultanous distillation and extraction, then were analyzed by GC-MS. Carbon number and order of an amine could be predicted by using retention time and equivalent chain length. Anchovy, codfish, imitation crab meat, cuttle fish, file fish, pollack, shrimp, octopus, harvest fish, and hard-shelled mussel were used for this investigation. Various smelly nitro compounds such as methylamine, acetamide, thiazole, 2-hydroxy isopropylamine, N-methyl pyrroline, piperidine, cyclohexylamine were identified, however, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, diethylamine were not detected. Principal components analysis was applied to GC-MS profiles for pattern recognition of smelly nitro compounds in dried fishes. Multivariate aspects using principal components analysis were very useful for pattern recognition of smelly components, category similarity.

  • Various types of accelerators, thiuram (TMTD), thiazole (MBTS), and sulfenamide (CBS) are added into a silica filled natural rubber (NR) compound. Their effects on vulcanization properties are also investigated. TMTD shows a fast vulcanization rate and a higer maximum torque ($T_{max}$), as well as excellent mechanical properties (hardness, 300% modulus, tensile strength, elongation). MBTS shows a moderate vulcanization rate, a lower $T_{max}$, and mechanical properties. Finally, CBS shows a slow vulcanization rate but excellent mechanical properties. The same vulcanization trend can be found in carbon black filled NR compounds.

  • A series of benzimidazole derivatives carrying different heterocycles such as 1,2,3-thiadiazole, 1,3,4-thiadiazole, thiazolidine, 2,3-dihydro-thiazole, 1,3,4-oxadiazole, semicarbazone and substituted thiosemi-carbazones were synthesized. Also a series of 1-methylbenzimidazole carrying hydroxy ethyl-amide, substituted sulfonyl hydrazide and benzoyl hydrazide from aminobenzoyl group at position 2 of 1-methylbenzimidazole were synthesized. The antimicrobial evaluation of some of the new compounds was carried out.

  • Inosine 5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) is a critical enzyme in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation. This enzyme catalyzes the $NAD^+$-dependent oxidation of IMP to XMP, the rate limiting step in de novo biosynthesis of guanine nucleotides. Therefore, the biochemical effect of IMPDH inhibition in sensitive cell types is decrease in intracellular guanine nucleotide levels, and the decrease in cellular GTP and deoxy GTP pool levels blocks DNA and RNA synthesis in rapidly proliferating tumor cells. • The model compounds of Vitamin $B_1$ 3-benzyl-4-methylthiazolium bromide, (1), 3, 4-dimethylthiazolium iodide (2) and 2-($\alpha$-hydroxyethyl)-3-benzyl-4-methylthiazolium bromide (3) were prepared by the organic synthesis. Colorimetric determination with phosphotungstic acid showed an increase of $1.1{\sim}1.2$ folds with compound (1) and $1.5{\sim}1.9$ folds with compound (3) when readings were carried out after an overnight, compared with immediate readings. Colorimetry with 2.6-dibromoquinone chloroimide yielded the compound (1) being $2.2{\sim}2.5$ folds higher than the compound (3). The half wave potentials and diffusion currents of anodic and cathodic waves of polarography with the same concentration of the compounds (1), (2) and (3) also resulted in different values of their waves. Therefore, it was a firm conclusion that any values obtained from quantitative analysis with this model compounds (1), (2) and (3) were not directly applicable to those of $B_1$.
