  • Bio-based polyester polyol was synthesized via esterification between azelaic acid and isosorbide. After esterification, bio-based polyurethanes were synthesized using polyester polyol, 1,3-propanediol as the chain extender, and 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, in mixing ratios of 1:1:1.5, 1:1:1.8, 1:1:2, and 1:1:2.3. The bio TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) samples were characterized by using FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), TGA (Thermal Gravimetric Analysis), DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry), and GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography). The mechanical properties (tensile stress and hardness) were obtained by using UTM, a Shore A tester, and a Taber abrasion tester. The viscoelastic properties were tested by an Rubber Processing Analyzer in dynamic strain sweep and dynamic frequency test modes. The chemical resistance was tested with methanol by using the swelling test method. Based on these results, the bio TPU synthesized with the ratio of 1:1:2.3, referred to as TPU 4, showed the highest thermal decomposition temperature, the largest molecular weight, and most compact matrix structure due to the highest ratio of the hard segment in the molecular structure. It also presented the highest tensile strength, the largest elongation, and the best viscoelastic properties among the different bio TPUs synthesized herein.

  • Polycarbonate thermoplastic composite materials are anisotropic and exhibit physical properties in the longitudinal direction. Therefore, the physical properties depend on the type and direction of reinforcements. The thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and resin impregnation can be controlled by adding carbon nanotubes to polycarbonate resin. However, the carbon fiber used as a reinforcing material is expensive, interfacial adhesion issues occur, and simulation values are different from actual values, making it difficult to perform mathematical analysis. However, carbon nanotubes have advantages such as light weight, rigidity, impact resistance, and reduced number of parts compared to metals. Due to these advantages, it has been applied to various products to reduce weight, improve corrosion resistance, and increase impact durability. As the content of carbon nanotubes or carbon fibers increases, the mechanical properties and antistatic and electromagnetic shielding performance improve. It is expected that the amount of carbon nanotubes or carbon fibers can be optimized and applied to various industrial products.

  • In comparison with thermosetting rubber, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) has various advantages such as simple processing, short cycle time and recycling of scrap. These advantages can lead to development of the high value-added rubber products due to reduction of the waste material, manufacturing cost and the defected product. This article involves a dynamic vulcanization method for EPDM/polypropylene blend, and the manufacturing of a fixed glass weather-strip by glass insert molding method using the blend. In order to investigate mechanical properties of the product, tensile strength, elongation, hardness and specific gravity were measured. Also morphological study was carried out using SEM. Developments of an efficient system of production and automatic process by molding of TPE and glass simultaneously are expected.

  • Influence of blend mode of extender oil on the properties of thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs), based on an ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer (EPDM) and a polypropylene (PP), was studied. The EPDM/PP TPVs were prepared in an open roll mill using two different modes in blending sequence of paraffinic oil and phenolic curative, i.e., Oil-Cure and Cure-Oil modes. Degree of cross-linking by gel fraction and properties such as hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break, and melt flow rate were investigated as a function of extender oil content for the two modes. Little influence of the blend mode of extender oil on the degree of cross-linking and mechanical behaviors was observed. However, the use of Cure-Oil mode in the preparation of EPDM/PP TPVs resulted in a marked increase in the level of processability as reflected by melt flow index, as compared to the use of Oil-Cure mode.

  • Thermoplastic elastomer was prepared from dynamical vulcanization of isotactic polypropylene(iPP)/nitrile rubber blend (NBR/iPP=70/30 wt/wt) in an internal mixer using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as a curing agent and zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA) as a coagent. There was a great improvement in tensile and tear strength, elongation-at-break and lower tension set when ZDMA was incorporated into the blend, which is supposed to be due to the increase in crosslink density or the rubber phase and the reduction in size of the rubber particles. It was revealed that the dynamically vulcanized blend exhibited good reprocessibility, indicating its thermoplastic nature.

  • In this paper, we constructed a molecular dynamics (MD) polymer model of PMMA with 95% of conversion by using dynamic polymerization algorithm of a thermoplastic polymer based on free radical polymerization. In this algorithm, we introduced a united-atom level coarse-grained force field that combines the non-bonded terms from the TraPPE-UA force field and the bonded terms from the PCFF force field to alleviate the computation efforts. The molecular weight distribution and the average molecular weight of the polymer were calculated by investigating each chain generated from the free radical polymerization simulation. The molecular weight of the polymer was controlled by the number of initiator radicals presented in the initial state and molecular weight effect to the density, the glass transition temperature, and the mechanical properties were studied.

  • It is very difficult to make complex 3 dimensional curved-shape composite laminates using the advanced unidirectional composite prepregs. This study shows development process of subscale composite parabolic antenna reflector using unidirectional AS4/PEEK prepreg tapes. The AS4/PEEK thermoplastic composite materials are known to have good thermal and chemical stabilities in addition to their high specific strength and modulus. Various lamination methods were investigated through finite element analyses to make up the laminate design of the reflector. The automated fiber placement method was used to fabricate the reflector. The thermal expansion test using full-bridge strain gage circuits was done to verity the performance of the composite product.

  • The application of infrared heating in the hot press forming of the thermoplastic composites is conducive to productivity with high-speed heating. However, high energy, high forming temperature, and high-speed heating derived from infrared heating can cause material degradation and deteriorate properties such as re-melting performance. Therefore, this study was conducted to optimize the process conditions of the hot press forming suitable for carbon fiber reinforced polyetherketoneketone(CF/PEKK) composites that are actively researched and developed as high-performance aviation materials. Specifically, the degradation mechanisms and properties that may occur in infrared high-speed heating were evaluated through morphological and thermal characteristics analysis and mechanical performance tests. The degradation mechanism was analyzed through morphological investigation of the crystal structure of PEKK. As a result, the size of the spherulite decreased as the degradation progressed, and finally, the spherulite disappeared. In thermal characteristics, the melting temperature, crystallization temperature and heat of crystallization tend to decrease as degradation progresses, and the crystal structure disappeared under long-term exposure at 460℃. In addition, the low bonding strength was observed on the degraded surface, and the bonding surfaces of PEKK did not melt intermittently. In conclusion, it was confirmed that the CF/PEKK composite material degraded at 420℃ in the infrared high-speed heating. Furthermore, the spherulite experienced morphological changes and the re-melting properties of thermoplastic materials were degraded.

  • This paper reports a study on a method for achieving lightweight thermoplastic laminate composites referred to as tow spreading technology. Thickness of an unspread 12 K carbon fiber tow is reduced by increasing the tow width from 7 mm to 20 mm. The polypropylene (PP) film was used to stabilize and impregnate the spread tow, covering it into a partially consolidated prepreg: 12 K carbon fiber spread tow/PP. Laminates were fabricated from the spread tow prepreg and control laminate composites were produced from unspread tow prepreg consisting of 12 K carbon fiber and PP. The void content, tensile and flexural properties of the composite laminates were investigated. Consequently, the spread tow laminate composite exhibited lower void content and improved mechanical properties.

  • The continuous fiber reinforced composites of GF/PA were fabricated using a pultrusion resin impregnation apparatus and cut into pellets of 6 mm length. GF/PA pellets were then melt-mixed with PP resin to prepare new types of ternary composites, GF/PA/PP. Mechanical and rheological properties of such composites revealed to be better than conventional ternary composites due to the longer average glass fibers. Measurements also showed that the mechanical properties of the composites prepared by direct injection molding were higher than those of the composites prepared by injection molding followed by extrusion. To improve adhesions of fiber surfaces and polymer matrix, PP-MAH (maleic anhydride) has been introduced in the GF/PA/PP composites as a compatibilizer. It was found that PP-MAH did indeed improve surface adhesion between fibers and polymer matrix and that, as a result, various mechanical properties were markedly enhanced. Visualization of the phase structure in the samples was done by means of SEM. The surfaces of glass fibers in GF/PA/PP composites revealed that the fibers remained to be encapsulated by PA resin. However, pre-encapsulation did not persist in GF/PA/PP/PP-MAH composites due to the improvement of surface adhesion between fibers and polymer matrix, although resin sticking to the fiber was observed.
