  • A linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis of double subsurface cracks propagation in a half-space subjected to moving thermomechanical surface traction was performed using the finite element method. The effect of frictional heat at the sliding surface on the crack growth behavior is analyzed in terms of the thermal load and peclet number. The crack propagation direction is predicted in light of the magnitudes of the maximum shear and tensile stress intensity factor ranges. When moving thermomechanical surface traction exists, subsurface horizontal cracks are propagation in-plane crack growth rate at the beginning but they are propagation out-of-plane crack growth rate by the frictional heat which is occurrence by the repeated sliding contact.

  • A postbuckling analysis is presented for a simply supported, moderately thick rectangular plate subjected to combined axial compression and uniform temperature loading and resting on a two-parameter elastic foundation. The two cases of thermal postbuckling of initially compressed plates and of compressive postbuckling of initially heated plates are considered. The initial geometrical imperfection of the plate is taken into account. The formulations are based on the Reissner-Mindlin plate theory considering the first order shear deformation effect, and including the plate-foundation interaction and thermal effect. The analysis uses a deflection-type perturbation technique to determine the buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Numerical examples cover the performances of perfect and imperfect, moderately thick plates resting on Winkler or Pasternak-type elastic foundations. Typical results are presented in dimensionless graphical form.

  • Epoxy resins are widely used in various fields due to their excellent thermal, mechanical and chemical properties. In order to improve the mechanical properties of the epoxy composition after curing, various materials are mixed in the epoxy resin. Among the nano materials, CNT is the most widely used. However, CNT has limitations in terms of manufacturing process and manufacturing cost. Therefore, there is a growing interest in naturally occurring HNTs having similar structure to that of CNT. In this study, the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy compositions containing HNTs treated with two types of silane compounds were investigated. The mechanical properties of silane-treated HNT were measured by using a universal testing machine. The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and thermomechanical analysis (TMA) were used to measure thermal properties. As a result of the above tests, when the HNT was surface-treated with aminosilane, the tensile strength of the epoxy composition containing the HNT was higher than that of the epoxy composition containing epoxy silane treated HNT. The linear thermal expansion coefficients (CTE) obtained from the thermomechanical analysis of the two epoxy compositions for the comparison of dimensional stability showed that the HNT composition treated with aminosilane showed a lower value of CTE than that of epoxy composition including the pristine HNT.

  • Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/functionalized-MWNT hybrid films were prepared by the solution intercalation method, using 4-cumylphenol-MWNT (CP-MWNT) as the functionalized-MWNT. The variation of the thermomechanical properties, morphology, gas permeability, and optical transparency of the hybrid films with CP-MWNT content in the range of 0$\sim$2.00 wt% were examined. The newly synthesized UHMWPE/functionalized-MWNT hybrid films were characterized by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and a universal tensile machine (UTM). It was found that the addition of only a small amount of functionalized-MWNT was sufficient to improve the thermomechanical properties of the UHMWPE hybrid films, with maximum enhancement being observed in the CP-MWNT loading in the range 0.50 to 1.00 wt%. The maximum enhancement in the oxygen gas barrier was also found at the functionalized MWNT content of 1.00 wt%. In this work, the thermomechanical properties and gas permeability of the hybrid films were found to be better than those of pure UHMWPE.

  • This paper deals with the industrial problem of thermal striping damage on the French prototype fast breeder reactor, Phenix and it was studied in coordination with the research program of IAEA. The thermomechanical and fracture mechanics evaluation procedure of thermal striping damage on the tee-junction of the secondary piping using Green's function method and standard FEM is presented. The thermohydraulic(T/H) loading condition used in the present analysis is the random type thermal loads computed by T/H analysis on the turbulent mixing of the two flows with different temperatures. The thermomechanical fatigue damage was evaluated according to ASME code section 111 subsection NH. The results of the fatigue analysis showed that fatigue failure would occur at the welded joint within 90,000 hours of operation. The assessment for the fracture behavior of the welded joint showed that the crack would be initiated at an early stage in the operation. It took 42,698.9 hours for the crack to propagate up to 5 mm along the thickness direction. After then, however, the instability analysis, using tearing modulus, showed that the crack would be arrested, which was in agreement with the actual observation of the crack. An efficient analysis procedure using Green's function approach for the crack propagation problem under random type load was proposed in this study. The analysis results showed good agreement with those of the practical observations.

  • Thermomechanical and shape memory properties of dicumyl peroxide(DCP) cured semicrystalline EPDM($Nordel^{(R)}$ IP) were investigated. From gel content analysis, it can be seen that Nordel can be crosslinked by small amount of DCP and the degree of crosslinking increased with the increase of DCP content. DSC analysis revealed that the melting temperature and degree of crystallinity of the crosslinked rubber decreased with the increase of DCP. Tensile test showed that tensile modulus increased and elongation at break of the rubber decreased with an increase in the degree of cross linking. The chemically crosslinked semi-crystalline EPDM exhibited excellent shape memory behavior, i.e. the sample was easily deformed to have an arbitrary secondary shape above its melting temperature and was fixed well in its deformed state when it is cooled, and then the fixed shape was recovered to its original shape very fast upon heating above its melting temperature.

  • This paper presents an analytical solution to the thermomechanical bending analysis of functionally graded sandwich plates by using a new hyperbolic shear deformation theory in which the stretching effect is included. The modulus of elasticity of plates is assumed to vary according to a power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The core layer is still homogeneous and made of an isotropic ceramic material. The effects of functionally graded material (FGM) layer thickness, volume fraction index, layer thickness ratio, thickness ratio and aspect ratio on the deflections and stresses of functionally graded sandwich plates are investigated.

  • In this paper, the thermomechanical responses of shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators and their applications as the shape adaptive structures combining SMA actuators produced in the form of strip with composite structures are investigated. The numerical algorithm of the 3-D SMA thermomechanical constitutive equations based on Lagoudas model is implemented to analyze the unique characteristics of SMA strip. Also, the incremental SMA constitutive equations are implemented in the user subroutine UMAT by using ABAQUS finite element program. The shape change of structure is caused by initially strained SMA strip bonded on the surface of the composite structure when thermally activated. Numerical results show that SMA strip actuator can generate enough recovery force to deform the composite structure and sustain the deformed shape subjected to large external load, simultaneously.

  • A full three-dimensional thermo-coupled rigid-viscoplastic finite element method and the currently developed microstructural evolution system which includes semi-empirical mathematical equations suggested by different research groups were used together to form an integrated system of process and microstructure simulation of hot rolling. The distribution and time history of thermomechanical variables such as temperature, strain, strain rate, and time during pass and between passes were obtained FEM analysis of multipass hot rolling processes. Then distribution of metallurgical variables were calculated successfully on the basis of instantaneous thermomechanical data. For the verification of this method the evolution of microstructure in plate rolling and shape rolling was simulated and their results were compared with the data available in literature. Consequently, this approach makes it passible to describe the realistic evolution of microstructure by avoiding the use of erroneous average value and can be used in CAE of multipass hot rolling.
