  • Ten commercially available red pepper powders were investigated using photostimulated-luminescence (PSL), thermoluminescence (TL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) analyses to confirm their irradiation status. The application of PSL, TL, and ESR analyses was also confirmed by in-house irradiation. In PSL-based screening, all samples gave negative photon counts (<700 PCs). The PSL calibration dose (1 kGy) showed a low sensitivity of 4 samples, while the others provided reliable screening results. TL glow curves demonstrated maximum peaks after $250^{\circ}C$ for the 6 samples; however 4 samples gave complex TL glow curves with maximum peaks in the range of $185-260^{\circ}C$ (radiation-specific), which could be the effect of an irradiated component in low concentration as the TL ratios of all samples were <0.1. Radiation-specific ESR features were absent in the all commercial samples. Variable irradiation detection properties were found; where the TL analysis showed the possible presence of an irradiated component in 4 samples requiring further monitoring and investigation.

  • This study was performed to investigate PSL and TL characteristics for the detection of different ratios of gamma-irradiated turmeric. It was possible to determine PSL and TL of 1- and 10-kGy irradiated turmeric. The TL ratios ($TL_1/TL_2$) of non-irradiated samples were lower than 0.001, while those of irradiated samples were higher than 0.355. In the PSL results, blended samples containing irradiated ingredients showed intermediate values for a 1% blending rate. Furthermore, TL analysis of blended samples seems to offer a promising method for irradiation identification by TL glow curve form and temperature range. The 1- and 10-kGy irradiated samples were able to be detected above a 4% blending rate. However, the TL ratio appeared as a threshold value below 0.1 for irradiated samples. Overall, TL analysis identified 4% blended samples containing gamma-irradiated turmeric.

  • This study described a method of thermoluminescence dating of pottery shards using subtraction method. TL measurement was achieved using two different types of samples prepared by quartz inclusion method and fine-grain technique. Fine grains (size range: $5-10{\mu}m$) were separated by suspending grounded pottery samples into acetone solution and sedimentation quantitatively. In quartz inclusion method quartz grains in the size range of 90 to $125{\mu}m$ diameter were obtained by extracting the quartz crystals embed in the pottery shards and etching them with 1.0 M HF solutions. The archaeological dose of both the quartz and fine grains was determined from the dose calibration curves obtained from sequential irradiation of $^{137}Cs$ gamma and $^{241}Am$ alpha source to the samples and TL measurement of natural samples, in which the alpha dose of 4.60 Gy for the Packjae pottery was obtained using subtraction method. Annual alpha dose rates ($3.05{\pm}0.11$ mGy/yr.) were determined by the analysis of U, Th contents in the pottery shards and evaluation of the values with Bell's equation. Dividing the alpha dose accumulated in the pottery shards by the annual alpha dose rate, we found age of approximately $1508{\pm}80$ years B.P. (AD. ca. 492 yr.) for the Packjae pottery. It matches well with the archeological age estimate (middle of 5th century) within 10 percent uncertainty and thereby conforms the age of the pottery sample.

  • Photostimulated luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) analyses were conducted for the detection of different irradiated dried fishes. All the non-irradiated samples provided PSL counts of lower than 700 (negative: $T_1$). Clear identification of irradiated sample was only possible for irradiated anchovy with PSL counts >5000; however, the results were unsatisfactory (not positive) for irradiated cod, dried filefish, hairtail, and herring samples. The contaminating silicate minerals were obtained by density separation or acid hydrolysis to perform TL analysis, which resulted in a low intensity of TL glow curve with a maximum peak after $250^{\circ}C$ for the non-irradiated samples that are irrespective of their kinds and methods for the mineral separation. The TL glow curves of high intensity with maximum peak in the temperature range of $150-250^{\circ}C$ were observed for all the irradiated samples. However, better results of TL glow curves and particularly of the TL ratio ($TL_1/TL_2$) were obtained when the minerals were separated by a acid hydrolysis method.

  • White ginseng powder, permitted to be irradiated in Korea for the purpose of microbial decontamination, was treated with electron beam at doses of $0{\sim}15\;kGy$ for a detection trial whether it is irradiated or not by measuring photostimulated luminescence for whole samples first and then (TL) for the mineral adhering to the samples. PSL values were less than threshold value (700, $T_{1}$) and were negative for nonirradiated samples but more than 5000 $(T_2)$ and were positive for irradiated ones. After PSL measurement mineral was separated from the whole samples using density separation. Mineral of nonirradiated samples was characterized by glow curves which have low intensity and were situated at the high temperature region (about $300^{\circ}C$) by the low level of natural radioactivity. Glow curves of minerals for all irradiated samples were observed at about $200^{\circ}C$. TL ratio by normalization was 0.01 for nonirradiated sample and more than 0.78 for irradiated samples, and it was possible to detect whether white ginseng powders were irradiated or not.

  • Commercial powdered soups, such as potato soup(PS), corn soup(CS), and chicken-herb soup(CHS), were gamma-irradiated at 0, 1, 5 and 10 kGy and subjected to physicochemical evaluation and identification trials by analyzing photostimulated luminescence(PSL), electron spin resonance(ESR), and thermoluminescence(TL). The changes in moisture content and pH of soup samples were negligible upon irradiation. The Hunter's color determinations showed that lightness (L value) decreased and yellowness (b value) increased as the irradiation dose increased in PS sample. The viscosity of irradiated samples was reduced in the order of PS, CS and CHS. The analyses of PSL, ESR and TL were applicable to the identification of irradiated powdered-soups at more than 1 kGy by detecting PSL photon counts/60 sec(over 5000), radiation-induced multicomponents-ESR signal, and typical TL glow curve at $150-250^{\circ}C$.

  • Photostimulated luminescence (PSL), electron spin resonance (ESR) and thermoluminescence (TL) analyses were conducted to detect whether 258 kinds of extracted and powdered forms food additives were irradiated or not. In a view of the PSL results, 9 kinds of the extracted and powdered samples (3.2%) showed over 5,000 photon counts $(60sec)^{-1}$ and these samples were judged to be irradiation-positive. Thirty nine kinds of the samples (15.6%) yielded 700~5,000 photon counts $(60sec)^{-1}$ and these samples were grouped into irradiation-potential, while the samples showed below 700 photon counts $(60sec)^{-1}$ sec were judged to be irradiation-negative. TL glow curves for minerals separated from 5 samples were detected at $150^{\circ}C$ with high intensity. However, TL analysis did not apply to other irradiation-positive and irradiation-potential samples because the minerals for TL detection were not separated from the samples. ESR measurements for irradiation-positive and irradiation-potential samples, judged by PSL detection, showed no specific signals to irradiation. The results indicated that PSL could be applied to identify irradiation treatment of extracted and powdered food additives, while TL was optional and ESR was not suitable for detection extracted and powdered food additives.

  • The thermoluminescence(TL) response in changing annealing condition, triboluminescence, and darkroom temperature for $Mg_2SiO_4$:Tb phosphor are examined. The experimental results are summerized as follows : 1. The uniformity of TL intensity is better In the disinfected $Mg_2SiO_4$ : Tb than in contaminated one. 2. The triboluminescence of $Mg_2SiO_4$ : Tb is almost not detected even if numbers of $Mg_2SiO_4$ : Tb falling are increased. 3. The fading effect of $Mg_2SiO_4$ : Tb is scarcely affected by freezing room. The followings are resulted from the study. The disinfected $Mg_2SiO_4$ : Tb phosphor should be used in the dose measurement and the immediate reading for $Mg_2SiO_4$ : Tb after exposure is better. And if the reading is not immediately taken, a law darkroom temperature for $Mg_2SiO_4$ : Tb storage is recommended.

  • A multipurpose TLD readout system for radiation dosimetry and thermoluminescence study is constructed and its characteristics are investigated. The thermoluminescent lights are measured by a PM tube and the current-to-frequency converter. TLDs are heated by platinum heater and the heating rate is linearly varied. Measurement of the glow curve and control of the whole system have been done by a personal computer equipped with an interface board. The automatic gain control can be done by the control software. The lower detection limit of the system is about $10\;{\mu}Gy$ and dose response is linear.
