Under nanosecond-pulsed laser irradiation, light-absorbing thin films have been used for photoacoustic transmitters for ultrasound generation. Especially, nanostructured absorbers are attractive due to high optical absorption and efficient thermoacoustic energy conversion: for example, 2-dimensional (2-D) gold nanostructure array, synthetic gold nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and reduced graphene oxides. Among them, CNT has been used to fabricate a composite film with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) that exhibits excellent photoacoustic conversion performance for high-frequency, high-amplitude ultrasound generation. Previously, CNT-PDMS nanocomposite films were made by using a high-temperature chemical vapor deposition (HTCVD) process for CNT growth. However, this approach is not suitable to fabricate large-area CNT films (>several cm2). This is because a chamber dimension of HTCVD is limited and also the process often causes nonuniform CNT growth when the film area increases. As an alternative approach, a solution-based process can be used to overcome these issues. We develop PDMS composite transmitters, based on the solution process, using several nanostructured light-absorbers such as CNTs, nanoink powders, and imprinted regular arrays of gold nanostructure. We compare fabrication processes of each composite transmitters and photoacoustic output performance.

The conversion of solar energy into acoustic waves is experimentally studied. Measurements were made on the Sound Pressure Level (SPL), frequency, onset time and the temperature gradient across the stack. A pyrex resonance tube is used with a honey-comb structure ceramic stack along with Ni-Cr and Cu wires. An AL1 acoustical analyzer was used to measure the SPL and frequency of acoustic waves whereas K-type thermocouples were hired to estimate temperature gradients. For a resonance tube of 100 mm, no acoustic waves were generated with a power input of 25W. By increasing its length to 200 mm, however, maximum SPLs of 96.4 dB, 106.3 dB and 112.8 dB were detected for the tubes of 10mm,20mm and 30mm in IDs and their respective stack positions of 70mm, 60mm and 50mm from the closed end.

This paper surveys the recent research activities regarding dynamical modeling of thermo-acoustic instabilities which are fundamental to actively control such phenomena in gas-turbine engines, rockets, and etc. For this, we introduce reduced-order modeling approaches, mainly conducted after 1990s. Particularly, we survey grey-box approaches, which determine the structure of the model based on physical rules and use system's input-output data for estimating parameters of the model. We also introduce black-box approaches using model structures without physics-based interpretation. Finally, we briefly discuss future directions and feasibilities of the research in this field.

Combustion instabilities are caused by the feedback relationship between heat release perturbations and acoustic pressure oscillations in the combustor. Studies on the combustion instability in an annular combustor have recently received great attention due to the enhanced NOx requirement in aero-engines. In this study, a thermoacoustic network model was developed in order to calculate the acoustic characteristics for various modes in the annular combustor. The network model is combined with flame transfer function(FTF) in order to calculate the stability of the combustor. Numerical results are compared with measurement data.

The transient and synchronization behaviors of a TA (thermo acoustic) laser pair were investigated experimentally for various crossing angles and different separation distances between the laser openings. Sound waves generated by the lasers were measured and analyzed at or near the focusing point by means of microphones, SPL meters, and a commercial software called Signal-Express. The two TA lasers were acoustically coupled through the air mass between their openings, and the only mode-locking operation that could be achieved was the one that was nearly $180^{\circ}C$ out of phase. The time to achieve synchronization was found to be dependent upon the initial mistuning of the frequencies and the crossing angle between the laser axes. The synchronization process could also be accelerated by turning on the laser with the lower power input first.

This study is on the pulsating combustion of premixed gas in a Rijke type combustor made of a honeycomb flame holder in a tube. Modelling for the onset condition of the oscillation is made by the ratio of the acoustic power generation based on the analysis of heat transfer to the power loss due to the thermoviscous dissipation and radiation. Experiment is performed for the characteristics of acoustic, thermal and combustion. It is shown that the theoretical modelling for the oscillation may be used as a limit condition. And the combustion analysis for the acoustic power generation is needed for better prediction of the onset condition. Experimental result shows that, by pulsation, the flame length is shortened and the flame temperature is decreased with increase in the heat transfer coefficient. The NO$_{x}$ concentration in the exhaust gas is significantly reduced by pulsation and the concentration of unburned hydrocarbon shows a little increase.e.
Combustion instability is a major issue in design and maintenance of gas turbine combustors for efficient operation with low emissions. With the thermoacoustic view point the instability is induced by the interaction of the unsteady heat release of the combustion process and the change in the acoustic pressure in the combustion chamber. In an effort to study the combustion dynamics of gas turbine combustors, Morgans et al (2014) have developed OSCILOS (open source combustion instability low order simulator) code and it is currently available online. In this study the code has been utilized to predict the combustion instability of a reported case for lean premixed gas turbine combustion, and then its prediction results have been compared with the corresponding experimental data. It turned out that both the predicted and the experimental combustion instability results agree well. Further the effects of some typical inlet acoustic boundary conditions on the prediction have been investigated briefly. It is believed that the validity and effectiveness of the open source code is reconfirmed through this benchmark test.

Combustion instability has been considered as very important issue for developing gas turbine and rocket engine. There is a need for fundamental understanding of combustion instability. In this study, combustion instability was numerically and experimentally investigated in a dump combustor with bluff body. The fuel and air mixture had overall equivalence ratio of 0.9 and was injected toward dump combustor. The pressure oscillation with approximately 256Hz was experimentally obtained. For numerical simulation, the standard k-$\varepsilon$ model was used for turbulence and the hybrid combustion model (eddy dissipation model and kinetically controlled model) was applied. After calculating steady solution, unsteady calculation was performed with forcing small perturbation on initial that solution. Pressure amplitude and frequency measured by pressure sensor is nearly the same as those predicted by numerical simulation. Furthermore, it is clear that a combustion instability involving vortex shedding is affected by acoustic-vortex-combustion interaction. The phase difference between the pressure and velocity is $\pi$/2, and that between the pressure and heat release rate is in excitation range described by Rayleigh, which is obvious that combustion instability for the bluff body combustor meets thermoacoustic instability criterion.

Lean premixed combustion was successful in meeting current NOx emission regulations. However, these often leads to combustion instability. This phenomena results from the feedback relationship between heat release perturbations and acoustic pressure oscillations in the combustor. Researches on the combustion instability in an annular combustor have recently received great attention due to the enhanced NOx requirement in aero-engines. In this study, the thermoacoustic network model has been developed in order to calculate the acoustics for longitudinal as well as circumferential modes in the annular combustor. The combustion model in the network model is calculated by flame transfer function(FTF). Numerical and analytical results are compared to an measurement data.
