This paper presents two sets of full three-dimensional thermoelastic finite element analyses of superimposed thermo-mechanically loaded Spar Wingskin Joints made with laminated Graphite Fiber Reinforced Plastic composites. The study emphasizes the influence of residual thermal stresses and material anisotropy on the inter-laminar delamination behavior of the joint structure. The delamination has been pre-embedded at the most likely location, i.e., in resin layer between the top and next ply of the fiber reinforced plastic laminated wingskin and near the spar overlap end. Multi-Point Constraint finite elements have been made use of at the vicinity of the delamination fronts. This helps in simulating the growth of the embedded delamination at both ends. The inter-laminar thermoelastic peel and shear stresses responsible for causing delamination damage due to a combined thermal and a static loading have been evaluated. Strain energy release rate components corresponding to the Mode I (opening), Mode II (sliding) and Mode III (tearing) of delamination are determined using the principle of Virtual Crack Closure Technique. These are seen to be different and non-self-similar at the two fronts of the embedded delamination. Residual stresses developed due to the thermoelastic anisotropy of the laminae are found to strongly influence the delamination onset and propagation characteristics, which have been reflected by the asymmetries in the nature of energy release rate plots and their significant variation along the delamination front.
The major parameters governing the fluid dynamical and thermo-dynamical behavior in the large pipeline network system are friction loss and the pipeline length. But in local pipeline networks and relatively short distance pipeline system, secondary loss and the considerations of the moving states of the fluid machine are also important. One of the major element in local pressure control system is pressure regulator. It causes the variations of the physical properties in that pipeline system. Especially, as there is not enough information to obtain reliable physical property values such as density, temperature etc. at the downstream of the pressure regulator, It is hard to calculate accurate solution in the pipeline network analysis. In this study, some numerical approaches to investigate the critical-flow-characteristics of the pressure regulator have been done and the detail examinations and considerations of the pressure regulator as a pipeline network elements according to the variations of the inlet-outlet pressure ratio have been carried. Finally the flow-flied distributions, relations and critical-flow-characteristics have been studied. in detail and the 1D analytic method to analyze critical pipe flow have been investigated

One of the major element in local pressure control system is pressure regulator. It causes the variations of the physical properties in that pipeline system. When it is under working, the accurate analysis of the flow properties is so difficult. In this study, some numerical approaches to investigate the critical-flow-characteristics of the pressure regulator have been done according to the variations of the opening ratio or cross-sectional area and the detail examinations and considerations of the pressure regulator as a pipeline network elements have been carried. Finally the flow-flied distributions and critical-flow-characteristics have been presented in detail and the critical flow phenomena and the relation to the opening ratio or cross-sectional-area ratio have been studied.
To perform the finish outside-diameter grinding process of ferrules which are widely used as fiber optic connectors, a high-precision centerless grinding machine is necessary. In this study, the thermal characteristics of the high-precision centerless grinding machine such as the temperature distribution, temperature rise and thermal deformation, are estimated based on the virtual prototype of the grinding machine and the heat generation rates of heat sources related to the machine operation conditions. The reliability of the predicted results is demonstrated by the temperature characteristics measured from the physical prototype. Especially, the predicted and measured results show the fact that the high-precision centerless grinding machine consisted of the hydrostatic GW and RW spindle systems, hydrostatic RW feeding mechanism, RW swivel mechanism, on-machine GW and RW dressers, and concrete-filled steel bed, has very stable thermal characteristics.
In this paper, thermo-flow characteristics of an outer-rotor type of a BLDC motor are numerically analyzed using three-dimensional turbulence modeling. In an advance design of BLDC motor, cooling blades and holes are preferred for the enhanced cooling performances. Rotating the blades and holes generates axial air flow passing through stator slots, which cools down stator by forced convection. For the present study, a new design of the BLDC motor has been developed and major design parameters such as the arrangement of cooling holes, the area of cooling holes, and cooling blades and the cooling blade angle, are analyzed for the enhanced convective heat transfer rate. It is found that the convective heat transfer rate of the new BLDC motor model is increased by about 8.1%, compared to that of the reference model.
Three different kinds of brake discs including two coated brake discs and one steel disc were tested under the same experimental conditions on a reduced scale braking test bench. A braking test bench was specially designed to analyse thermo-mechanical and frictional behaviors of two types of brake with different sizes in stop and hold braking modes. Plasma spray coating technique was also used to coat the discs with ceramic powder. During the test four commercial brake pads were coupled with discs. Ceramic coated discs showed good stability in friction coefficient at high speed and high energy braking conditions. But they caused large wear loss of pad mass compared with the steel disc. It was shown that thermal barrier effect in ceramic coated discs adjusted the thermal partition between pad and disc. For a steel disc. it showed fluctuating friction coefficient at high speed but small wear loss of pad mass compared with ceramic coated discs.
This paper is to evaluate fracture characteristics of API 2W Gr.50 TMCP steel weldment typically applied for offshore structures, with the focus on the influence of heat input arising from flux cored arc welding. Based on the results and insights developed from this study, it is found that the toughness for both CTOD and impact exhibits a tendency to decrease as the weld heat input increases. The reheated zone of weldmetal exhibit lower hardness than solidified zone and microstructure that are liable to affect the toughness are acicular ferrite and martensite-austenite constituents (M-A). In particular, M-A is a more effective micro-phase for CTOD toughness than impact toughness.
Micro duplex stainless steel is used to denote a fine scale two-phase micro structure consisting austenite and firrite. The development of this structure was done by proper thermo-mechanical processing. The objective of present investigation is to study creep characteristics of this alloy. Since we have little design data about the W behaviors of the alloy. An apparatus has been designed and built fir conducting creep tests under constant load conditions. A series of creep tests on them have been performed to get the basic design data and life prediction of micro duplex stainless steel products and we have gotten the 1311owing results. First the stress exponents decrease as the test temperatures increase. Secondly, the creep activation energy Gradually decreases as the stresses become higher. Thirdly, the constant of Larson-Miller Parameters on this alloy is estimated as about 5. Last, the fiactographs at the creep rupture show both the ductile and brittle fracture modes according to the creep conditions.
Since the preflex beam is fabricated through welding, the pre-compressive stresses that should occur over the concrete pier are diminished by the welding residual stresses. Therefore welding residual stresses must be relieved during the fabrication. Therefore, the analysis and examination of the accurate welding residual stress distribution characteristics are necessary. In this study, accurate distribution of welding residual stress of the preflex beam is analyzed by the finite element method, using 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional elements. Further, the thermo-mechanical behavior of the preflex beam is also studied. After the finite element analysis, real distribution of welding residual stress is measured using the sectioning method, and then is compared with the simulation results. The distribution of welding residual stress by finite analysis agreed well with the experimental results.
During warm and hot forging process of steels or aluminum alloys, dies are subject to early fracture, severe wear by thermo-mechanical stress. Especially, during the die-casting of aluminum alloys, the service life of dies is incredibly lowered. In this study we investigated the characteristics of TiBN films produced by PECVD. TiBN films showed very high hardness, excellent wear resistance, which could enhance the service life of die parts such as forging punch, die casting core pin successfully.
