  • This study presents an analytical framework for estimating the thermo-mechanical behavior of a composite beam exposed to fire. The framework involves: a fire simulation from which the evolution of temperature on the structure surface is obtained; data transfer by an interface model, whereby the surface temperature is assigned to the finite element model of the structure for thermo-mechanical analysis; and nonlinear thermo-mechanical analysis for predicting the structural response under high temperatures. We use a plastic-damage model for calculating the response of concrete slabs, and propose a method to determine the stiffness degradation parameter of the plastic-damage model by a nonlinear regression of concrete cylinder test data. To validate simulation results, structural fire experiments have been performed on a real-scale steel-concrete composite beam using the fire load prescribed by ASTM E119 standard fire curve. The calculated evolution of deflection at the center of the beam shows good agreement with experimental results. The local test results as well as the effective plastic strain distribution and section rotation of the composite beam at elevated temperatures are also investigated.

  • Thermo-osmosis of liquids in a microscale channel is investigated by theoretical and simulation study. From the basic set of conservation equations, the temperature and velocity distributions are derived in the function of the given temperatures and pressure gradient. The pressure gradient for a given temperature gradient is then obtained by the molecular simulation. It is shown that the temperature gradient tangential to the surface induces the pressure gradient and thus the flow in the interfacial region between the liquid and channel surface. The thermo-osmotic flow is proportional to the applied temperature gradient, and the factor of proportionality depends on temperature and intermolecular potential. The origin and characteristics of the phenomenon are discussed in molecular details.

  • This study investigates the effects of operating conditions on the chattering of an automotive disk brake by experimental and computational methods. Design factors, which cause chattering in automobiles, have attracted great attentions for long time; but they are not well understood yet. For this study, we construct a brake dynamometer for measuring the disk surface temperature during chattering, and propose an efficient hybrid algorithm (combining FFT-FEA and traditional FEA program) for analyzing the thermo-elastic behavior of three-dimensional brake system. We successfully measure the judder in a brake system via the dynamometer and efficiently simulate the contact pressure variation by the hybrid algorithm. The three-dimensional simulation of thermo-mechanical interactions on the automotive brake, showing the transient thermo-elastic instability phenomenon, is presented for the first time in this academic community. We also find from the experimental study that the disk bulk temperature strongly influences the brake chattering in the automotive disk brakes.

  • In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was carried to predict thermo-mechanical behaviors for carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced epoxy composites and to analyze the trends. Total of six models having the volume fractions of CNT from 0 to 25% in epoxy were constructed. To predict thermal behaviors, temperature was increased constantly from 300 to 600 K, and the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) analyzed using the relationship between temperature and specific volume. The elastic moduli that represented to the mechanical behaviors were also predicted by constant strain. Additionally, the effects of functionalization of CNT on mechanical behaviors of composite were analyzed. Models were constructed to represent CNTs functionalized by nitrogen doping and COOH groops, and interfacial behaviors and elastic moduli were analyzed. Results showed that the agglomerations of CNTs in epoxy cause by perturbations of thermo-mechanical behaviors, and the functionalization of CNTs improved the interfacial response as well as mechanical properties.

  • The brake system is important part of automobile safety system. The disc brake system is divided two parts: the rotating axisymmetrical disc and the stationary pads. During braking, the kinetic energy and potential energy of moving vehicle were converted into the thermal energy through frictional heat between the brake disc and the pads. The frictional heat, which is generated on the interface of the disc and pads, can cause high temperature during the braking process. The object of present work is to determine temperature and thermal stress, to compare to simulation results and experimental results in the disc by partial 3D model of ventilated disc brake with appropriate boundary conditions. In the simulation process, the mechanical loads were applied to the thermo-mechanical coupling analysis in order to simulate the process of heat produced by friction.

  • A finite element-based, integrated process model is presented for a three dimensional, coupled analysis of the thermo-mechanical behavior of the strip and work roll in the continuous hot strip rolling. The validity of the proposed model is examined through comparison with measurements. The effect of Edge-Heater on the finishing delivery temperatures is examined by using the present model. The models capability of revealing the effect of diverse process parameters is demonstrated through a series of process simulation.

  • Water quenching is one method of cooling after hot forming, which is presently being used for the manufacturing of automobile parts. The formed parts at room temperature are heated and then cooled rapidly in a water bath to produce high strength. The formed parts may undergo excessive thermal distortion during the water quench. In order to predict the distortion during water quenching, a coupled thermo-mechanical simulation is needed. In the current study, the simulation of heating and cooling of boron steel cylinders was performed. The material properties for the simulation were calculated from JMatPro, and the convective heat transfer coefficient was obtained from experimental tests. The results show that the thermal distortion and the residual stresses are well predicted by the coupled simulation.

  • Thermo-mechanical simulation of the friction stir butt welding process was performed for AA5083-H18 sheets, utilizing commercial FVM code, STAR-CCM+, which is based on Eulerian formulation. Temperature and strain rate histories along the material flow were calculated under the steady state condition and simulated temperature distributions (profiles and peak values) were compared with experiments for verification. It was found that by including proper thermal properties of the backing plate (anvil) the accuracy of the simulation results increased significantly.

  • Hot Press Forming (HPF), an advanced sheet forming method in which a high strength part can be produced by forming at high temperature and rapid cooling in dies, is one of the most successful forming process in producing components with complex geometric shape, high strength and a minimum of springback. In order to obtain effectively and accurately numerical finite element simulations of the actual HPF process, the flow stress of a boron steel in the austenitic state at elevated temperatures has been investigated with Gleeble system. To evaluate the formability of the thermo- mechanical material characteristics in the HPF process, the FLDo defined at the lowest point in the forming limit diagrams of a boron steel has been investigated. In addition, the simulation results of thermo-mechanical coupled analysis of an automobile one-piece lower-arm part are compared with the experimental ones to confirm the validity of the proposed simulations.
