  • Subsea tunnel can be highly vulnerable to seawater intrusion due to unexpected high-water pressure during construction. An artificial ground freezing (AGF) will be a promising alternative to conventional reinforcement or water-tightening technology under high-water pressure conditions. In this study, the freezing energy and required time was calculated by the theoretical model of the heat flow to estimate the total amount of refrigerant required for the artificial ground freezing. A lab-scale freezing chamber was devised to investigate changes in the thermal and mechanical properties of sandy soil corresponding to the variation of the salinity and water pressure. The freezing time was measured with different conditions during the chamber freezing tests. Its validity was evaluated by comparing the results between the freezing chamber experiment and the numerical analysis. In particular, the freezing time showed no significant difference between the theoretical model and the numerical analysis. The amount of refrigerant for artificial ground freezing was estimated from the numerical analysis and the freezing efficiency obtained from the chamber test. In addition, the energy ratio for maintaining frozen status was calculated by the proposed formula. It is believed that the energy ratio for freezing will depend on the depth of rock cover in the subsea tunnels and the water temperature on the sea floor.

  • Issues of chronology on archaeological remains or relics have been a storm-center of controversy when various archaeological researches have been done. Sometimes there is a limit for figuring out issues of chronology by archaeological research. In that case, the field of natural science is often needed to work out issues of chronology. Among various subjects in natural science, archaeomagnetism plays an important role in dating archaeological remains for baked earth bearing relics. In particular, archaeomagnetism is of use for sites where directly excavated dating proxy is unavailable. Terrestrial magnetism changes along with the passage of time and leaves trace by many kinds of residual magnetization which could be called fossil of terrestrial magnetism. Archaeomagnetic dating method is used to assign a date to the archaeological remains in which baked earth is found by measuring the changes of terrestrial magnetism through the thermal remanent magnetization retained in baked earth. This study aims to constrain the age of fire at Buinsa, Daege, Korea using 27 samples that were collected from a layer of baked earth. Buinsa is famous for the place where kept the first edition of Tripitaka Koreana, which was lost in fire at the second invasion of mongolia. In addition, there is a record that there was revolt around this region in A.D.1203. According to archaeomagnetic dating, ages of A.D.1150~1200 and A.D.1130~1210 were assigned for the two building sites in Buinsa, respectively. To this end, it can be concluded that the layer of baked earth on the two building sites in Buinsa recorded the vestige of fire caused by revolt.

  • To learn more about the calibration properties of reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs) by the combination of gas chromatography(GC)-pulsed flame photometric detector (PFPD) and thermal desorption method, a series of calibration experiments were conducted on the basis of both internal and external calibration approaches. For these experiments, gaseous standards of 4 RSCs ($H_2S$, $CH_3SH$, DMS, and DMDS) were prepared at two different concentration levels of both low (10, 20, 50,and 100 ppb) and high ranges (100, 200, 500, and 1000 ppb) along with $CS_2$ as an internal standard. First, the external calibration results were compared between fixed standard volume (FSV) and fixed standard concentration (FSC) method. Secondly, FSV-based calibration results were compared between external and internal calibration results. As FSV method suffers from sensitivity variations less significantly than FSC, the former is recommended to maintain the consistency in GC-TD sensitivity for RSC analysis. In addition, when the calibration data were examined in terms of RSE between external and internal calibration data, the results were not consistent enough to show improvements in internal method. Hence, diverse efforts are desirable to optimize the reproducibility in terms of GC-TD sensitivity for RSC analysis.

  • Organosilicone-based surfactants, consisting of hydrophobic organosilicone groups coupled to hydrophilic polar groups, have been widely used in many industrial fields starting from polyurethane foam to construction materials, cosmetics, paints & inks, agrochemicals, etc., because of their low surface tension, lubricity, spreading, water repellency and thermal and chemical stability, resulted from the unique properties of organosilicone. Especially, organosiloxane surfactants, having low molecular weight siloxane as hydrophobe, exhibit low surface tension and excellent wettability and spreadability, leading to their applications as super wetter/super spreader, but have the disadvantage of vulnerability to hydrolysis. A variety of low molecular weight siloxane surfactant structures are required to provide the functional improvement and the defect resolution for reflecting the necessities in the various applications. This review includes the synthetic schemes of reactive tetrasiloxanes and disiloxanes as hydrophobic siloxane backbones, the main reaction schemes, such as hydrosilylation reaction, for coupling reactive tetrasiloxanes or disiloxanes to hydrophilic groups, and the main synthetic schemes of the tetra- and di-siloxane surfactants having polyether-, carbohydrate-, gemini-, bola-type surfactant structures.

  • Transient receptor potential vanilloid 3 (TRPV3) is a non-selective cation channel with modest permeability to calcium ions. It is involved in intracellular calcium signaling and is therefore important in processes such as thermal sensation, skin barrier formation, and wound healing. TRPV3 was initially proposed as a warm temperature sensor. It is activated by synthetic small-molecule chemicals and plant-derived natural compounds such as camphor and eugenol. Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill (SC) has diverse pharmacological properties including antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing activities. It is extensively used as an oriental herbal medicine for the treatment of various diseases. In this study, we investigated whether SC fruit extracts and seed oil, as well as four compounds isolated from the fruit can activate the TRPV3 channel. By performing whole-cell patch clamp recording in HEK293T cells overexpressing TRPV3, we found that the methanolic extract of SC fruit has an agonistic effect on the TRPV3 channel. Furthermore, electrophysiological analysis revealed that ${\gamma}$-schisandrin, one of the isolated compounds, activated TRPV3 at a concentration of $30{\mu}M$. In addition, ${\gamma}$-schisandrin (${\sim}100{\mu}M$) increased cytoplasmic $Ca^{2+}$ concentrations by approximately 20% in response to TRPV3 activation. This is the first report to indicate that SC extract and ${\gamma}$-schisandrin can modulate the TRPV3 channel. This report also suggests a mechanism by which ${\gamma}$-schisandrin acts as a therapeutic agent against TRPV3-related diseases.

  • 2,2'-Bipyridinium chlorochromate[$C_{10}H_8N_2HCrO_3Cl$] was synthesized by the reaction of 2,2'- bipyridine with chromium(VI) trioxide in 6M HCl. The structure was characterized by IR and ICP analysis. The oxidation of benzyl alcohol using 2,2'-bipyridinium chlorochromate in various solvents showed that the reactivity increased with the increase in the order of the dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}$), in the order: cyclohexene< chloroform$p-CH_3$, H, m-Br, $m-NO_2$) in N,N'-dimethylformamide. Electron-donating substituents accelerated the reaction, whereas electron acceptor groups retarded the reaction. The Hammett reaction constant(${\rho}$) was -0.64(303K). The oxidation reactivity of alcohols can be a useful factor to study about physical properties such as thermal stability, when the polysilsesquioxane solution is ready for an applying coating agent. The observed experimental data was used to rationalized the hydride ion transfer in the rate-determining step.

  • We analyzed the physical and chemical properties such as proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, heating values, thermogravimetric analysis, and combustion test for the organic sludges generated from paper and beverage manufacturing industries in the industrial complex. The average water and combustible content of the organic sludges from paper and beverage manufacturing industries were 66.07% and 14.67%, 54.98% and 26.77%, respectively. From the ultimate analysis of the organic sludges, C, H, O, N, and S compositions were 21.75%, 3.42%, 32.70%, 0.63%, and 0.30%, respectively. For beverage manufacturing industries, C, H, O, N, and S compositions were 39.88%, 4.28%, 23.20%. 2.65%, and 0.35%, respectively. According to the results of investigating the lower heating values by Dulong's equation, 1 sludge(T company) was on the range of over 2,000 kcal/kg. This sludge could be directly applied to industries which try to use the energy by direct incineration. From the TGA test, the minimum combustion temperature of A company's sludge was about $700^{\circ}C$ for direct use for energy and that of 3 sludges(C, I, and T company) were at least over $800^{\circ}C$.

  • The NOx conversion properties of Mn-Cu-$TiO_2$ and $V_2O_5$/$TiO_2$ catalysts were studied for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with ammonia. The performance of the catalysts was investigated in terms of their $NOx$ conversion activity as a function of the reaction temperature and space velocity. The activity of the Mn-Cu-$TiO_2$ catalyst decreased with increasing reaction temperature and space velocity. However, the activity of the $V_2O_5$/$TiO_2$ catalyst increased with increasing reaction temperature. High activity of the Mn-Cu-$TiO_2$ catalyst was observed at temperatures below $200^{\circ}C$. H2-TPR and XPS analyses were conducted to explain these results. It was found that the activity of the Mn-Cu-$TiO_2$ catalyst was influenced by the thermal shock caused by the change of the initial reaction temperature, whereas the $V_2O_5$/$TiO_2$ catalyst was not affected by the initial reaction temperature. In the case of catalyst C, the $NO_x$ conversion efficiency decreased with increasing space velocity. The decrease in the $NO_x$ conversion efficiency with increasing space velocity was much less for catalyst D than for catalyst C.

  • The seasonal distribution and migration of flying squid, Ommastrephes bartrami (LeSueur), in the North Pacific were studied by means of mantle length, surface temperature, and catch and effort data of the Korean drift gillnet fishery from 1980 to 1983. The water temperature for the best fishing ranged from $15^{\circ}\;to\;16^{\circ}C$ in May through July and from $13^{\circ}\;to\;18^{\circ}C$ in August through January. High densities of flying squid were found in the thermal fronts with $18^{\circ}C$ isotherm in August and with $15^{\circ}C$ isotherm in September. The densities of flying squid were higher in the western region than in the eastern region in the North Pacific. The high densities of flying squid in the northwestern Pacific were attributed to the high gradients of oceanographic properties in the region. Migration models for flying squid were hypothesized based on the monthly distributions of catch per unit net, mantle length compositions by statistical blocks, and the hydrographic features of the North Pacific. The large flying squid moved to the northern region and to the central Pacific region earlier than the small sized group in the northward migration period (from June to August). Flying squid begin the reverse southward migration from the Subarctic Frontal Zone in autumn with onset of cooling and the development of Oyashio Current. The large sized group starts their southward return migration from more northern waters than the small sized group but the former moves past the later ana reaches the spawing ground first.
